Mercedes is capable of engineering extraordinary powertrains and there are lots of existing examples already out there. A V8 is their speciality, the most typical layout for an automobile with a three-pointed star. It started with the original M100 6.3, a portion of the popularity ascribes to the M156 6.2-litre, too, but it is the M113K that stuck in the memory and heart of most people. It’s big, beefy, torquey and not many competitors can rival the deep baritone of a supercharged AMG V8.

When I was broke, and had nothing, i found a E320 with the 3.2 for 600 dollars. I changed the conductor plate and swapped the trans fluid and it was so reliable, i even went to Mexico in it. Now my whole life changed and I am the proud owner of a CLS55AMG. with a lot of mods and eurocharged ecu and tcu tune. Taking it to a tracknight on the 14th! I am trying to get my Wavetrac installed before then!

Good for you, I recently got a m113 on eBay and put it in lucky it started right up, I saved like ten k doing it my self with no help one jack and one hoist, 300 for motor and 400 shipping thanks eBay

M113K is certainly the most powerful , but M113 5.4 AMG is the best overall combination that gives good power , legendary reliability and good economy for a car that does 0-60mph in just over 5 seconds. Even after 15 plus years , normal maintenance is all you need ..oil changes , spark plugs every 100,000 km , vc gaskets after 12 years or so , and a new crank position sensor every 13 years. No major mechanical issues at all. Good video ,,great information.

I had the M119 and the M113K, i love them both! The M113 (K) is modern, better fuel economy, more powerfull and cheaper in maintanence. For daily use, the M113 (K) is the engine to go for. For racing and fun, i prefer the M119.

Great video! I own a W210 E430 with an M113 and a W211 E55 M113K and I love them both. The AMG has a smaller supercharger pulley and tune with long tube headers, split cooler and secondary intercooler and I don’t plan on getting rid of either one of them any time soon!

@@lokilowkey3049tone ring in the rear axle is shot. Pull the axle and check your reluctor ring, likely the culprit when nothing else is fixing it. I went apesh*t replacing brake and wheelspeed sensors only to have them still throw codes. Replaced the reluctor rings in the rear and voila, everything works again. It’s a stupid expensive and small part too, but can be done on a budget if you know how to work on a car.

I have an S55 AMG with this engine. I have to say that I've never loved an engine more than the M113K. Very beefy engine that's so composed at low speeds. Just wish it had a better transmission

@@user-jw4dh9wv6w yes, 5 speed meaning it's slow but reliable and I've heard it can withstand 1000-1200nM without any upgrades. Edit: it can withstand 1,079nM!

I have the M113 5.0 in a 2006 CLS 500. It is a great engine & 95% of the time 306 bhp is enough, but there are times when a bit more would be nice ...maybe an AMG CLS 55 with the 5.4 M113K next 😉

@@trentdawg2832 I did look at the 5.5 M273 but decided to forego the extra 80 bhp or so (and even slightly better fuel consumption believe it or not) for reliability.

@@phil955i the m273 is as reliable as the m113. It only has a couple of sensors that may fail by ageing (replaced mines for a pretty cheap price) but apart from that it holds so well. And there is a big difference in the power and even the consumption. Both great engines (10/10 for the m273 and 11/10 for the m113)

Litterally in the process of rebuilding my 310,000kms M113 5.4L out of my ML55 and this video comes up haha. I absolutely love these engines. Boring the intake on the heads and exhaust ports in the process. Can’t wait to hear it roar back to life after the completely new variable exhaust systems is finished.

Excellent video I own a clk 430 with the 4.3 m113 and I think this engine has really gone under the radar. Mine has 272,000 miles and still runs like new. I was amazed by this engine because Mercedes usually get written off as being “unreliable” or hard to work on. The the m113 is quite the opposite. 👍

1999 E430 here. Choice was made for me but I feel like I got lucky with the M113. Mine runs fine. Car has 173k miles so many more to come.

I have a 2006 E55 AMG. 83 mm s/c pulley with 168 mm crank pulley, mid length headers catless, larger inter cooler and pump, tuned ecu and tcu. It gives me a smile on my face every time.

The OM617 was the best they ever made. Never failed, didn't rust. (I had two of them, extremely good). After that it went downwards very fast. No mercedes for me anymore

I've had two M113 4.3 and even for the baby V8 it pulls great and often surprises people, I currently have a S430L that's a 1990kg car and that engine gets it up to 60mph in no time at all. I love this engine and always will for it's reliability 👍well done Mercedes and an awesome video dude 😃

Same I have a S430 and I’d say the power is more than adequate. I’ve had an r129 SL with the M113 and an E320 with a M112. I know it seemed like a downgrade from the MB engines of the 90s but this family of engines has proved super reliable

@@omostim2385 I had a 1997 R129, the last year of the M119. The only problem a late-model M119 has are that the cam-chain guides develop cracks and break. But '97 is the only year M119 I'd want, as it had newer technology "sprinkled on it" by then.

Great video and highly informative. I have an SLK 55AMG with the 5.4 n/a engine. It’s a wonderful mix of docility, economy and then brute power when conditions allow, with little or no fade as it approached the red line. The 7 speed auto box helps utilise about more of the engines potential due to the extra 2 ratios. Such a shame that they never offered a manual option. 😢

@@laithellabban Love my SLK 55 which is a 2005 R171 model which I have owned for 4 years. Look out for rust around the wheel arches The rear subframe and fuel pipes are also prone to rust. It is not unknown for the subframe to need to be replaced. Also oil leaks on the rocker covers of the engine are not uncommon but easily rectified. Brake pads and discs on the early cars with 6 pot front callipers are extremely expensive to replace. Around £2k for the fronts only. The air conditioning condenser is under the front bumper and tricky to get out if it needs to be replaced due to corrosion or damage. Always check that the air con is working. The MPG for me averages 19-20 in town but on a motorway cruise can hit 30 MPG. It can be a surprisingly economical touring car if driven with restraint. Check that the electric roof works as expensive to fix if broken. Good luck with your intended purchase.

I drove a C63 imported from Germany, to the states, and thought is was fantastic. Too bad it wasn't offered with a manual. Same guy had a CTS-V, which was a rauchous tire smoker, and a hoot to drive as well, but the Benz was just much more composed and relaxed in it's capabilities.

Always like getting into the need section of engines! I currently run a m112k, totally stock and it's so smooth and quick....but quiet! Needs freeing up which is on my list. Or perhaps I just get something with this in. Crazy noises!

I started my Sl500 to charge the batteries and didn't know the radiator fan wasn't working and it over heated and blew the radiator hose off. Thank God it didn't crack or blow a head gasket. I replaced the fan and it runs great.

I bought w211 e55 amg 2006. What is better for cooling? Heat exchanger (2L of coolant capacity) and (1 liter capacity) secondary heat exchanger together or only 1 big heat exchanger 3.1L coolant capacity

If your 55 car has a bad intercooler pump - 100$ part, if it's leaking some oil - valve covers are as easy as intercooler pump. Heat soaking is not a problem if you are on a stock pulley. Basically - your only problem is gasoline prices. Charged sparkplugs at 51kmiles - wasted money - they were good.

Before we know it the m113 will be 3 decades old , in conclusion the M113k will forever have my heart .. for one ☝️ ,It’s one of the most sexiest looking AMG engines in the engine bay of a Mercedes Benz in my opinion ever , it looks like it’s already going 200mph the way it’s shaped !? ... Yea yea they have other good looking fully covered carbon fiber engines/ bays , but think about it this way . The m113k was designed over two decades ago based on the m113. Showing once again how badass both motors are & with added HP of supercharger both the engine & transmission can take a beating . CASE CLOSED 😅( edit ) Btw I’m on my second w211 e55 amg car (and I’ve owned the 2nd one for 7 years now , and that’s because I didn’t even know how legendary the car was the first go around until after / during the sale of the first car . all I remember was the power / quality/ luxury for the cost was insane. Only then is when I got serious about ownership and the preservation of this car it’s not a museum piece but it’s still a good example. & as a closer,The only 2 cars I ever wish to own forever are the CLS55 & E55 so that proves dreams do come true no matter what.

Another great thing about it is that thanks to SOHC heads it's much more compact, so it's much easier to swap into many cars. People are swapping them into RX-8, BMW E36, Miatas, etc. There is a guy here in Poland that swapped a 5.0 M113 into a Nissan Patrol and that thing RIPS! A two tonne truck on 38 inch tires and it absolutely HAULS ASS offroad!

I don't care what people says , second gen OM651 (DE18) is the best modern diesel engine mercedes made , it's well engineered and well built , lasts for 1mil miles without rebuild and can take heavy beating , plus it revs faster than any diesel I've ever seen and it sorta sounds like a high power gasoline engine , I love it

The OM646 Evo is less restrained in terms of emissions and consumption, and it also is more robust since it doesn't have as many plastic parts. The powerband isn't as smooth, but I find that to be a fun factor adder

Yes , no mechanical problems like BMW rod bearings , Porsche IMS bearings and bore scoring or MB 6.3 M156 head bolts and cam wear that can all cost big dollars to fix.

how much horsepower can you make with the c43 4.3l, sl500 5.0l m113, clk dtm 5.4l m113k and slr m155 5.4l supercharged motors? can it go over 1000hp like the bmw v8s, like s62 and s63? there is a bmw s63 with over 1200hp, or even more... maybe if you turbo it?

this m113 engine is a multiplex v90 angle degre , so the v6 follow the v8 in developpement . because when you create a v8 it is a 90 degres angle for less vibration and a regular v6 have normally a 60 degrees angle. the v6 M112 version with 12 spark plugs is a v8 16 spark plugswith 2 cylinder suppress with a more effective balance shaft wheel., nothing in common withe the old 320 i6 and 420 v8

12:38 A lot of car companies overestimate how long their spark plugs last. Far too many 100,000 mile spark plugs are used up at 60,000 miles. Some engines won't trigger an OBDII misfire code at that point, but they won't be performing as well as they could. Also, the ignition coils tend not to last as long when the spark plugs are pushed to their limit. Given how much ignition coils cost, new spark plugs ahead of schedule are cheap insurance.

I work as mechanic myself and have never seen recommended Intervalls longer than about 60 000 Km. Which is about 37k, miles. Never heard worn plugs would have an impact on the coils lifespan. Difficult to prove I suppose.

@@phil955i No the 500SEL was called the S class I'm pretty sure the pre 1993 Mercedes naming system works like this 3 digit number showing engine displacement in centilitres Letter E showing Einspritzmotor (fuel injected engine) Letter D for diesel L for langer Radstand (long wheelbase) S for Sonderklasse (special class, and often just called S Klasse or S class) G for Geländerwagen (G wagon) T for touring (estate) So 300E was medium sized car with fuel injection and 3l engine 500SEL was an s class with fuel injection, long wheelbase and 5l engine 230G was a g wagon with carburetted 2.3l engine 300td was a medium sized estate car with 3l diesel The exception for this rule was the compact 190 series, which uses 190 and then the engine displacement badge in litres Eg 190E 2.6 or 190D 2.5 After 1993 190 becomes c class Medium sized becomes e class The letters E and T are dropped

And yeah back then the numbers actually related to the engine size, but as of about 20 odd years ago (along with BMW) they no longer do. I curently own a CLS ...what do you reckon that stands for? 😉

@@phil955i the 190 series launched in the early 80s with 3 models I think 190E with m102 fuel injection 190D with om601 diesel 190 with m102 with downdraft carburettor So ur sort of right in that u could get a model with carburettor but that was called the 190 whereas the 190E had k jetronic

Is it REALLY that reliable though? 150k on my E55 and I’ve had ringland/engine failure due to factory naturally aspirated ring gap spec; oil pump chain hitting the timing cover (engine pull); and two supercharger failures, once of which was replaced at dealer at 90k.

From my reading, i think all m113k engines have the chain slap. If i recall correctly, it is because the spring steel tensioner they used for the oil pump drive chain is a little weak and lets the chain slap a bit, at least at idle. Until i found it was a common thing i was worried i had valvetrain noise, 04 s55. It wont slap when cold, only after it warms up. Ive read of cars with well over a hundred, maybe two hundred thousand miles with the chain slap and no issues. I believe the regular m113 never had this issue because i believe they have a different oil pump setup with no oil pump chain, could be wrong. You talk about piston failure, did you turn up the boost? Also the e55 has an oring for oilpump that goes bad eventually and can kill the engine. As the engine has oil squirters i believe, a bad oring situation could result in insufficient flow to the oil squirters, raising piston temp. Though i think the bearings would spin before that happens. Also i dont think many people change the supercharger oil. Even then bearings dont last forever.

@@connor3288 Correct, regular M113 didn't have the issue thanks to a different oil pump setup. But as for my ringland failure - it was due to to back-to-back 0-160 MPH runs causing ends of piston ring to touch on #8. 83mm supercharger pulley, so the least aggressive one with a PLM heat exchanger and CM30 pump. The oil pump o-ring was definitely bad since it essentially turned to plastic/hard. Supercharger was a new '580' supercharger from the dealer 60,000 ago.
