Kicking off a series of vids about French films, we start of with Louis Malle's Ascenseur pour l'échafaud, feating a standout performance from Jeanne Moreau and a killer Miles Davis soundtrack.

This film made me think of Hitchcock and now I found this quote so I guess i'm not crazy. "I was split between my tremendous admiration for Robert Bresson and the temptation to make a Hitchcock-like film." - Louis Malle

So I was thinking about the grappling hook conundrum. The rope used looks quite thin and therefore light even if it is strong enough to hold a grown man's weight. It is possible that the weight of the hook itself caused it to droop further and further down until the entire rope had run through the barb end and undone the loop over the rail...and dropped to the ground.

Really thoughtful review. Having seen this film about 25 years ago, I enjoyed the refreshment. I especially enjoyed the political critique. What a sexy period in the arts. Miles Davis is credited with creating modal jazz in the late 50s and I believe this score is in that vein. Thank you.

To me 70s USA crime films look and feel like French crime films of this era. The social context is explicitly different and the grittiness is less visceral and more methodic but the soul is similar.

This has been on my list for ages. I really like Melville and Malle was my French Cinema gateway drug back in the day. (If we want perfect French we can ask Stewart Fernie, lol.) Great analysis Aaron.

Sometimes known as "Elevator/Lift to the Scaffold" (the other way round), as scaffold is another word for gallows...

Sure, throw a request (might take me ages to get to it!) Guitar's okay, thanks! Need to find more time to practice, but am hoping to do a short (and probably embarassing :-) ) one-year anniversary vid!
