Finally getting to this mini-series on one of my favourite American filmmakers of this century - Kelly Reichardt. Starting off with the fabulous slow-burn of 2006's Old Joy.
More on the film:

Ebert describes the film as "unshakeable": www.rogerebert...
A long, thoughtful review from Brian Eggert at Deep Focus (2020): deepfocusrevie...
A fairly recent interview with Reichardt - minor spoilers for some of her later films, but she has some really interesting things to say about her approach to cinema and to "slowness": www.theguardia...

Reichhardt's style reminds me of Yasujirō Ozu. Great film

I really enjoy watching your movie analysis videos. They make me feel like I'm having an engaging conversation with a friend. Also appreciate your taste in movies; most of your videos touch on movies that are rarely talked about in this format. Anyways I am a big fan of Old Joy so this video was great for me.

I can wholly relate to this film because six years ago, I was with my group of friends from the 1990s. I told them this; “We can no longer show up at mine or someone else’s doorstep and expect to hang out “. Back in the early 1990s, my first ex wife and I lived in a LARGE townhouse that was the loci of activities in our group. Since all of us have marriage, children, livestock, or obligations, we can no longer just show up for movies, Pizza Hut delivery, booze, drugs, or just fun. We all left that at the doorstep with our adult obligations.

I watched this film based upon your evaluation of “Wendy and Lucy” and I wasn’t disappointed. As a point of disclosure, politically, I am to the right of Genghiz Khan and twenty years ago when I lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee, it wasn’t uncommon to see NRA stickers on Subaru or Land Rovers owner by trust fund, obviously leftist hippies. I’ve seen NRA stickers alongside bumper stickers such as “ I love my country, but distrust my government “ or “Love Your Mother” earth stickers.

Oh man, I remember those "love/distrust" bumper stickers from the '90s! Yeah, growing up in Maine, it would've been pretty common to see NRA merch slide into the back-to-the-land community for a while, at least up through the mid-90s or so. I think for a movie set during W's second term when the NRA was much more fully politicized, it must have been a conscious choice on Reichardt's part, and I wonder what the reasoning was . . . to show Kurt as one of those crunchy-gun types? Or to kick off the low-level thriller vibe? Or as a counter to Mark's Air America liberalism? Maybe all three? An effective choice, though. Thanks.

@@AaronHunter I’m remiss as this notification JUST popped up on YT. It was fashionable to hate Bush ‘43 back in those days, so I can only surmise that it was related to that public trend.
