This is how Cocoon gave me self confidence to tackle my backlog of puzzle games. Not just my Game of the Year 2023, Cocoon is a perfect puzzle game. In Cocoon, Jeppe Carlsen does something that Inside and Limbo never could. What is Cocoon? Well it's not Pizza Tower. Cocoon teaches self confidence through immersion and hidden tutorials. It's simple and minimalist in its puzzle game design while also being a Lovecraft meets Giger horror experience. So... what is Coccoon? It's perfection in its simplicity. Earning my GOTY 2023 (Game of the Year 2023) title. The puzzles in Cocoon may not be hard, but their immersive and prioritize discovery. This indie game is wonderful and deserves more video essay content made around it. What is Cocoon? Well... Play Cocoon! And no there is no mention of the Pizza Tower vs Cocoon thing... because what? Anyway, this is why Cocoon isn't like other puzzle games!

Cocoon is great at blocking off access to players when an area is no longer necessary for the next puzzle's solution. When something becomes inaccessible, you know you're done with an area or a device. It was so great to prevent unnecessary backtracking and letting the player mess with only the pieces needed to make progress.

Cocoon, Return of the Obra Dinn, and Portal 2 are in my top tier of puzzle games. All managing to walk that fine line between challenging enough to be rewarding without needing to turn to a guide. (I don’t count Outer Wilds as a puzzle game, otherwise that would be the peak)

I think my favorite thing about your videos is that we get insights into game design and gaming in general that are genuinely, organically yours. I'm a puzzle gamer, and I've never felt that "I am not smart enough" drumbeat in the back of my head about a video game, but I've felt it in other settings. And I had never given much thought to how lockouts, forced restarts, and even visiting a main menu could do thoroughly disrupt thought patterns and inject that intense moment of self-devaluation. Definitely a game I plan to pick up and play sooner rather than later

Imagine!!! Hi uwu. And thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed. I love a bit of self deprecation, as you know. But yeah a lot of the reason I don't stream puzzle games is due to that drumbeat in the back of my head. I remember when I streamed Limbo, I had such a hard time with the end game and it was so awful to be in front of an audience during that LMAO

That slick "2023 was a bonkers year for gaming" section was such a fun ride to watch. Also you included Hi-Fi Rush so you made me extra happy! I just finished Cocoon, and while I think the genre is one that I won't often get completely immersed in, I loved this world, and the minimal control/interface really left me with a smile on the face.

Highly recommend (obviously)! And I edited around most puzzle solutions, so your journey should be pretty fresh whenever you end up picking it up.

Just finished this game yesterday. As a student studying in game design, I'm flabbergasted how effortlessly the game pulled me into its world and mechanics. Especially the first set of levels where things were easier and sense of discovery was high. This game should be a benchmark and a study for designing videogame flows in general.

I finished the game about 7 hours ago and damn, it was really great. I was only stuck at exactly one point and that was only because I didn't sea a stairway. Also, I have to admit that I didn't recognise what the music did for most of the game. Really great video, it was super engaging from the beginning to the end! And I looked into your video description since I wanted to know how one of the games you showed was called and realised that a handful of them have the same link leading to the Alan wake 2 humble page :) just so you know.

Damn I really wanted to finish the game before watching your essay. 81% finished and oh boy what a great puzzle game. Thought so many times how people can come up with such lovely world building and fresh sometimes tricky challenges. Will wait with watching the video for some days more.

So I finished the game after 11 hours. I never found the puzzles unfair, even if the shooting sequences sometimes annoyed me. I thought the ending was great, no final bossfight and a nice conclusion.
