I'm currently in Thailand training and did a private with trainer Gae (pronounced "Gay") last week at Khun Suek Muay Thai in Ao Nang, he is absolutely on another level compared to pad holders in the west. I've been training for 10 years back in Canada and have never experienced anything like that private. He begins his privates by getting you to lay on your back and then proceeds to stretch your legs in every direction farther than you ever thought you could stretch (I honestly thought he was going to tear something but he didn't). He then starts with some light technical pad work to access your weakness' and strengths, then after 10-20 min he begins to turn it up and absolutely beat your ***, sweeping you, countering you, clinching you, pretty much anything to test you, he even threw Oblique kicks at my supporting leg to knock me over while I was throwing kicks (which in the west would be considered "dirty" in sparring or a real fight). It was an absolutely mind blowing experience, after that one hour private I was more tired then I have ever been in my life, and had learned more about Muay Thai then I had in my 10 years training. I would highly recommend anyone who is looking to compete in kickboxing go do a private with trainer Gae, there is a reason he is the best!

Kicking standing leg is standard technique since Muaythai Boran. Many of Gae technique come from there which is why you don't see it normally. To counter the kick you can also using both of your elbow or you can push kick over the knee to stop the kick.

Seeing Gae actually sweep his students for throwing lazy round kicks and hit them back constantly as counter attack simulation is the best is what made him one of the best pad holder out there. I have seen so many so called professional trainers out there just hold pad infront of their students calling out attacks over and over with very little moving around. Pad holding is suppose to be simulating fights without injuries, yet no counter attack and just standing infront of each other throwing shots is a good way to get brain damage. Yea it's good cardio but if your target didn't hit you back in a realistic way or didn't even hit back, you better off just go to the heavy bag and have that trainer calling shots right next to you

The head coach at my boxing gym would do this and it was amazing. If you didnt raise your hands, he would atack that opening, if you didn't return your lead leg to its stance after a double jab, he would atack, if you left your head still while you were supposed to be evading shots, he would atack. The rest of the coaches would only do it when they saw your hands down, and while thats still great its a shame they didnt go the extra mile. Its a huge difference.

His name pronounces like 'GAY'. Fun fact :) the name was not made in order to insult or demean him in any way. But he said in an interview that his name came from the fact that back when he was a kid, he was quite a rowdy kid who sometimes pick fights with other kids (not the case nowadays, of course). The word we call those kids in Thailand, especially in the countryside is 'เกเร' (pronounces like 'GAY RAY'). Hence, he playfully adopted the name trainer 'GAE' (the first syllable, same sound but changed the spelling :))

What an awesome change in your series Gabriel, and really informative and helpful. I always call it ‘functional pad-holding’, but that’s just what I say. Most people hold pads like it’s a cardio session, or a combo memory game. That’s not very helpful if you actually plan on getting in the ring. It will also give people a false sense of security. I love the rapport these two have. They train hard, and play hard too. A few sessions with Trainer Gae would surely raise any fighter’s game 🙏

Exactly! I had to ditch one of my pad holders for exactly that reason. Pointless 8-10 move combos, the limited defense work was sloppy (I don't want to train to bite every fake), not enough repetition or active feedback on fundamentals, but lots of burpees between sets and "Go Go Go!". About two weeks later I was working the bag by myself and bumped into a guy with 25 years experience in boxing and an impressive amateur career. While his student was warming up we were chatting, and he offered to to help me for a few minutes. Night and day.

I dunno man, ive seen lots of trainers throw shots back, but in yt vids, gae is really excessive. If a guy wasnt able to block / dodge or keep his hands up, it is normal to tap him on the exposed body part. If he doesnt learn, pad holder can telegraph more or slow down or something. But gae throws multiple big shots, sweeps people hard and fast, etc etc. That isnt teaching, but just hurting.
@jaketheasianguy3307
@jaketheasianguy3307 Год назад
Absolutely no one got injured when trained with him. Every videos of him sweeping his students are all on heavily padded floor and every single one of his students just laugh and shrug off the fall like it's nothing. Also Thai pads are very soft, it does not hurt one bit even when you swing it fast at people
@antondelacruz9362
@antondelacruz9362 Год назад
@@jaketheasianguy3307 of course the stufents laugh. They paid big money to train with him, hes a celebrity, and the students enjoy his brand of training. I didnt say people get injured but that hurting them isnt the same as teaching them. That said, you dont know whether they get injured and in fact another comment in this section says gae injured someone by sweeping them. I dont really care about this point but you brought it up.
@majstks3333
@majstks3333 Год назад
It is teaching, this type of pad work is meant to simulate sparring or a fight. You'll get swept hard and fast in a fight, Gae has exceptional control too. You have to think, if this guy is producing world champions, then he is doing something right. As for the other people who get personal training with him, well they knew what they signed up for.
@antondelacruz9362
@antondelacruz9362 Год назад
@@majstks3333 no hurting is not teaching and padwork is not supposed to risk injury but teach. Slamming people as fast and hard as gae does is not appropriate because it is an injury risk regardless of the floor material. He certainly does not have exceptional control because again, he hits too hard for padwork. Just because he trains champs doesnt mean he is infallible or that hitting students hard in padwork is what makes them good. And if you insist on this point, well, the vast majority of coaches who produce as many or more champs than gae do not beat up their students in padwork. In fact, the goat coach pippa produced skarbowsky, silapathai, somluck, lerdsila, bill, and saenchai without hurting them in padwork, and anyway jocky gym allegedly couldnt even afford gear back in their day and the fighters trained mostly by sparring. Padwork, much less injury risk padwork, isnt even necessary in combat sport training and was invented less than a century ago. Now some people will agree or disagree. Heck gabe himself likes gae. But gabe gave his reasons and these are mine. Im no pro much less champ unlike gabe, but i speak of my own experience and observation. Personally if i were still training, id like gae because i learn faster when im in danger. However ive long since learned that the vast majority of people do not learn well when theyre getting abused, and most trainers at gaes level or higher do not beat up their students in padwork.
@majstks3333
@majstks3333 Год назад
@@antondelacruz9362 I agree padwork is not meant to cause injury or harm, but I consider this style of padwork to be used sparingly and only to mentally / physically prepare a newer fighter to test their heart (how fast they get up after being swept or how they react to an unexpected hit from the pads). But I agree for seasoned fighters there is no need for this style unless it's just playing around. And yeah I agreeyou don't need this style of padwork for any future champ or previous champ. But it still holds a purpose in my opinion, it's not just about harming the student. There's still a lesson to be learned.
