I've lived all over the world. When I initially left in 2008, I went with the attitude that Britain was problematic, a bit racist etc. Having been abroad and now come back, with maturity I realise the UK is by far (along with a few other western countries) the best on earth. It doesn't get better. In other countries/civilisations, it works like this - Pay your annual visa, contribute your taxes, no access to public services, don't abide by this, leave immediately. Forget about owning a house with a garden or getting citizenship. People just want to get rich, aid their families and don't care about society. There is no social systems like in the UK, no charities (if there are, they are western-run) that help people, no where near the same level scientific and medical advancements like we hear every day in the UK. People want to make British people feel guilty for the past, but the past was a long time ago and the UK did both good and bad things. There was no perfect/better model of governance, the British system exported a lot of good things and without the multiracial British empire, the whole world would have probably come under the facist monoracial dictatorships of Germany and Japan who showed unbelievable cruelty.

There are some things to be historically ashamed of: slave trade, revenge for 1857 rebellion in India (carried out by the East Indies Company, not the British State), 1919 Amritsar massacre. But mostly the Anglo-Normans, then the English, then the British (who are not "we", since they're all long dead) didn't actually do things like "colonising". Mostly the British only really conceived of this concept of an "empire" after the French (in North America, India and the Carribean) started plotting with indigenous peoples to expand their terrority. Most "empires" involve conquest of land and peoples for the sake of it. The British hardly ever did this. And usually when they did it was in fact the state trailing after armed merchant-adventurers who went to trade, but were eventually forced to dispute colonial control with other European powers. India is an example: the first English ship sailed there in 1608. The British only had to defeat French ambitions in India 150 years later, in the Seven Years War, 1756-63. The European slave trade, in which Britain participated, was the worst episode in modern era so-called Christian European history: Christian Europeans imitated more brutal cultures from West Africa and the Middle East in this, when they shouldn't have. There's no reason to single the British out from the other Europeans, and of course the British were the first to decide to abolish the slave trade, and eventually used their maritime might to enforce that, against the wishes of the French, Spanish, etc. The most justifiable accusation of "colonisation" can probably be used in talking of English activities in Ireland. But after the Reformation, and the fact that the Irish chose to stick with Catholicism, England was always perfectly correct to worry that France or Spain might invade Ireland and use it as a jumping-off point for invading the island of Britain. All these actions can be understood if one bothers to get a very detailed understanding of history.
The young lady who said the UK isnt safe has a bit of a skewed view. London certainly has problems like all major cities and bad management compounds it, but in global terms, the UK is actually a very safe country for women and in general!
