I’m in my mid 20s and something fun me and my girl like to do is dress up and go on a date in late 1930s and early 40s style and fashion. My buddy has a restored 1941 Ford Super Deluxe I have access to. So much fun to show up to our favorite upscale restaurant looking like time travelers.

@@jetcitysinatra7300 Reviewbrah is responsible for getting me into classic style three years ago! Hey, @Mickey Red Nose and @Gonk Droid, getting dressed in a classic way will always cause people to comment and make a scene when they see you. I've had a lot of nice comments, mostly from women and some guys. Some guys might be sarcastic and say "nice suit!". They might be having a laugh, but I think they are truly impressed, but they are not allowed to say so, according to their own social norms. If you like to wear it, then wear it. Life is too short to care about the opinions of strangers.

@@jetcitysinatra7300 I hear you. Dressing with style presents a challenge. Classic style is based on a time when men of all body types can put a suit on, and embellish his strengths and blur his weaknesses. Tailored vintage clothing, tailored off-the -rack, made to measure, custom, and bespoke clothing are a few different avenues to explore for getting the fit and style right.

Yeah, Now the pendulum swings in the other direction and now its like as if the man is pregnant and needs to be home with the wife and the the owner has to pay for both to be pregnant at home. How about you do a national tax to pay for others to be home on your dollar. Humans are naturally lazy and naturally pollute the world with their degeneracy. I've never owned or worn a suit. I only wore a tie for high school graduation. I have no cuff links, rings, or dress shoes. I live in the forested mountains. I'm unconcerned with fashion. But I find this channel very interesting and educational. And I do see parallels to my life. When going out into the bush, there are considerations as to how to dress properly. What type of fabric depending on season and weather. Layers, jackets, and hat considerations. Footwear needs vary too. And I'm talking about natural fabrics like cotton, wool, leather, and silk. The proper kind of knife or axe to have with you. Walking sticks. Proper packs. I'm talking about classical or "old time" thinking like your grandfather or great grandfather would have used. (Not todays polypropylene and thinsulate, or modern plastic and aluminum gear). So I also like the history lessons on this channel. Well done.

- Dress as best you can, but never dress to conform. - Notions of treating women with special respect are outdated. Ideally, gentlemen treat everyone with utmost respect at all times. - The worth of your style isn't defined by the price tag on it (in other words, "quality"), but the fit and how you combine it. - The basics of good manners will get you a long ways. Knowing how to use a shrimp fork is fine and dandy, but basic politeness is king.

Those fabrics are fantastic. The fit for me is a little different from what I like though, I like a higher gorge, a slightly lower rise in the trousers, slightly less volume in the trousers, buttoning point is really close for me, and jacket length maybe a little higher but not much. All in all yes, that was a good decade for menswear, providing you could afford it then.

The series 10s, 20s, and now 30s. These were superb videos! I remember the Salvation Army store selling tuxedos with cut-away coats and tons of those classy 30s suits in the 50s and 60s. My parents called them "Zoot Suits" when they were double breasted with wide peaked lapels. Now I search for those vintage suits, but the ones I am lucky to find never seem to have a jacket size larger than 38. People were smaller back then as we all have been told. I'm not a big man, but I take a 44 reg jacket.

After an old man died, we were cleaning out his stuff . We found a blanket rolled up ( grey ) secured with a wide leather belt and in it a double-breasted grey wool overcoat with rounded lapels and a collar meant to be buttoned up so it could cover the neck and patches on the elbows , it also had 4 pockets all with flaps and button closure (metal rings to hold the buttons in ). Inside there was a brown tweed wool double-breasted sports jacket with 4 buttons , patches on the elbows , button cuffs , rounded lapels and 2 pockets with flaps and side slits that went behind the pockets for hand warmers .Inside that was a grey shirt and a yellow shirt both with a single patch pocket, dark blue tie unlined ,flat cap in grey wool , leather gloves , dark brown pants with belt loops and patched knees ( heavy canvas but still dark brown ) ,with flap covers for the pockets secured with 2 buttons each (metal rings to hold the buttons in ) and a few hanker chefs . From some receipts we found, we think it was used from 1931 to 1935 from Ontario , Idaho, Minnesota to Michigan to Manitoba

I definitely don't have all the details and fits, but the overall garments, hats, dressing for the occasion, and accessories are closest to that style. White tie is still de regeur for formal evening events, braces are worn most of the time, homburgs and bowlers are common, and three piece suits abound in the colder months for me!

The outfit rundown on this episode was quite a sight to be seen! Look at that perfect leg opening on the trousers and how nice the suit drapes. This is a clear lesson for the modern enthusiast: the wheel as already been invented, just make a little bit more to be in touch with modern times and it is perfection. The only details that I would call outdated on that outfit is the lapel shape and the color plus pattern on the suit. A good bespoke tailor would be able to make a timeless suit only by changing those two details. Great contend as always!

Smoking smoking and more smoking. Everybody smoked everywhere. The interwar years were when smoking really took off and almost everybody was puffing away. Women in particular took up the habit. Pipes were extremely popular among working and middle class men while cigars remained the smoke of choice for the upper class. Cigarettes also became increasingly popular with fancy carry cases being available. Both men and women enjoyed those long cigarette holders that seemed so chic and were used by people as diverse as Auntie Mame and President Franklin Roosevelt.

Really interesting. I'm attending this year's Brooklands Relived (a 1930s event at Brooklands Museum in the UK which has loads of vintage cars). Planning on wearing a dark grey full tweed waistcoat (even the back is tweed - took me ages to find one!) and a cravat. Sadly, I don't have a car from the 1930s, though.

Question: Why is it that the last button on a vest is never buttoned? I've noticed that on all TV shows, & in a lot of your videos as well...

Thanks a lot for this video and your global work! I was wondering what music theme you were using for your introductions and conclusions. Even shazam couldn't help me finding the saxophone titel back. Can you please help me out? Mercie beaucoup!

I would like to say thank you to all GG staff for this video: I (we) need it! Now it would be great if you do the same for 1940s and 1950s. I can even say 1960s... but only till the first half of the decade. 😃

Now I have to get ready to hit the club again both this video in style and then Delta Parole - Wasted Music Video that I had watched before this again since every night out I rock out to it first goes stunnin smooth, motivated me to be the man tonight. What are any of you other beautiful peoples hit the club songs when we can again?

Treasure trove of knowledge, as usual. (Imaginary) hats off to Herr Schneider. One can really see why it's called the "golden era", as none of it looks really dated or completely out of style (especially not compared to only 10 years earlier) today. It's basically the look that I'm going for with my wardrobe: heavier fabrics, fuller cuts, wide lapels etc. Bonus points for somewhat breaking up the romanticized idea that everybody on the streets looked like Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart, when the economic realities for most people were really quite different.

Hi everyone, I love the '30s and especially the clothing. I ordered a Federation deluxe hat from "The Hattery" in Australia. It's made by Akubra and the quality is superb. The owners are nice people too.

I believe the Federation IV by Akubra is styled from the Indiana Jones Raiders hat, having a tall straight-sided crown. It's a striking look, and many modern Fedoras with low tapered crowns look skimpy by comparison.

As an owner of a 1930 Model A, it would be great to have a 30's outfit to go with it. Any guidance in maybe buying a suit from a thrift/used outlet and having it tailored to look 30's?

I have an odd question. From which era did shoulder pads became norm in men's suit jacket? If I am not wrong then Napoleonic era didn't have shoulder pads in most men's jackets.

Excellent video! A question: do you ever get pushback from people due to you showing illustrations from vintage catalogues? My area of expertise is Scottish Highland Dress from the 1930s, and whenever I demonstrate something with an illustration from one of my vintage catalogues I get people saying "those are just catalogues, they don't tell you anything about how people dressed". This is absurd 1) because catalogue space is valuable and they're not going to waste it with things that won't sell and 2) the manner of dress seen in the catalogues is exactly as seen in photographs from the same period. However the same people who dismiss the catalogues also dismiss period photographs saying "that's just how they dressed up to have their photo taken, they wouldn't actually wear clothes like that". In short, these people dismiss all the evidence that exists, and have no evidence supporting their claims that people dressed in some other way (which they never specify).
