What Miyazaki Confirmed for Shadow of the Erdtree | Elden Ring DLC Lore

Hidetaka Miyazaki just gave 2 massive interviews about what we can expect from the upcoming Elden Ring DLC.
In interviews with IGN and Eurogamer, Miyazaki explains how we'll enter the DLC, what role Miquella will play, the size of Shadow of the Erdtree, and if FromSoft has any additional Elden Ring DLC/sequel plans afterwards.

The comparison for Messmer being the thing that is the antithesis of the lands between is perfect for me. I wanted more from Rykard or Volcano Manor in the base game, seems we'll be getting at least some of that here. Also super neat to see the armor he wears similar to the drake set i think it is? That's going to be cool.

I'm still a bit salty we didn't get an Age of Blasphemy ending for Rykard! Here's hoping Messmer play some kind of that role in the DLC. And I definitely think he's wearing some version of the Drake Set! It's also interesting that one of the very few mentions of "impaling" in the base game is from the Briars of Punishment spell, found in the Mountaintops of the Giants...

Regarding interconnected world, I was looking at all of the separate peaks and cliff faces and was wondering how all of those were accessed. Dark souls style connection would be so cool.

I believe That Mesmer was the first child of Radagon. However when Radagon despises his red hair and fire, Messmer reviled in it since we see him in the trailer use fire power - he probably knew that he was related to the giants in some regard and saw this as a advantage and I guess when Radagon saw that his son grew an admiration of what he hated the most, he sent him away. Just like Mohg and Morgott who were cursed with their Omen blood, Morgott despises it and himself while Mohg, thanks to the formless mother, used his Omen blood to his advantage.

That would make a lot of sense! I especially like the juxtaposition with Mohg/Morgott and having one ashamed of their Otherness and the other reveling in it.

Supposedly, according to Rata, there isn't going to be a new ending. Awww man that sucks, I was waiting for a Miquella ending. :( The DLC is going to be dope for sure tho

I don’t think that is what Miyazaki was saying, it seems like he was saying the base game won’t affect the dlc but not the other way around.

No wonder it took like 2 years for this dlc, it's basically it's own self contained souls game worth of level and boss design.

I kinda love how they used Martin for Elden Ring, having him make a world and mythos set before the game so they can destroy it and put a new story set in an apocalyptic era using that mythos as the springboard. So unique

Messemer has those dragon communion eyes. So he's chumped on some dragon hearts. Could he be the impaler from the impaler's catacombs in the weeping peninsula? There's also the wandering mosoleum there which a ghost at the church of pilgrimage mentions "oh Marika, he is your unwanted child." And the way to get to weeping peninsula is the bridge of sacrifices. Was Messmer sacrificed and banished to the shadow realm by Marika for some reason? He has destined death in his hand and that coupled with his draconic aspects kinda ties him to Farum Azula and the GEQ as well...

Could be! It's also possible that Messmer was the demigod Marika used to do her messy work and then got rid of him when he was no longer of use. There's a popular theory brewing that he may have been the one who impaled all the giants. And him being sacrificed might even explain why in the Weeping Peninsula of all places, on top of everything you just mentioned, there's a Zamor locked in an Evergaol with Radagon's Scarseal (ok, that last bit read as an Elden Ring mad lib)

Regarding Fromsoft's statement that they havent got any plans for future content I believe that if (and most likely) that the DLC is a success, they will release more content. I feel that because that Elden Ring could be the first Souls-Like MMO, instead of sequels they just add additional expansion packs (similar to FFXIV etc.), and if they game gets outdated it could just be re-mastered onto the next generation of hardware to continue the cycle.

FS is working on both ER and AC simultaneously. So since ER's DLC expansion has been released, they would most likely focus more on AC now that it's gotten a great response in a much wider range than their expected niche market.

Armored Core only surfed in elden ring's success and people's craving for a fromsoft souls-like experience, I'm sure the great majority of players including myself would rather have a new souls like game every 2 years rather than alternate releases with the AC series

@@liketobecalled are you freaking kidding me? "AC surfed on ER's success" bro, FS success came from AC. Majority of Soul-like mechanics came from AC. The whole bit with Souls is it's AC of the Dark Fantasy genre. Please, don't open your mouth with such ignorance ever again. The AC6 that was released was toned down garbage to attract players like you so you won't be turned off with much more difficult and convoluted it is. Souls games have always been the tutorial of AC and that's why AC6 is a dumbed down garbage. Lastly, don't project YOUR own wishes and clump the entire FS fan base with you. We are not the same. FS fans wouldn't care what FS puts out because they're all different from one another. Even the sequel of the same franchise is completely removed from the prequel. So no, that garbage sentiment of yours is garbage. The same as your opinion. "AC surfed on the success of ER" what fucking laughable shit. FYI, AC 4th gen kicked off the series on a global scale. Demon Souls and Dark Souls didn't get any popularity. The only reason why Souls like genre even got popular is because of the entire video game industry started only selling cash grabs Ubisoft's AC4 gave FS a world wide recognition. Making your opinion the complete fucking opposite. Lastly, the reason why AC franchise wasn't being produced in FS is because Miyazaki isn't interested in making anything outside of WESTERN medieval fantasy because he's a Muira fan. AC and Sekiro aren't fun projects for him. Neither was Bloodborne (despite being western)

Idk it does sound prequel. I hope it’s connected because everyone is saving and looting preparing for an easy transition . So many “prepare for DLC” vids. 😂

Criticism on elden ring being to big is pathetic to me , i waish it was bigger and obviously it is going to be when the dlc drops . I can not wait for this .i am so excited .ive not been exccited to play a game since funnily enough elden ring lol

Somebody's video I watched, put it in a different perspective too... they did it or saw that somebody else did it... but after the map size comments that were made. They took limgrave, weeping peninsula included, and saw how many times it could fit into the ENTIRE world map. Minus the underground areas... but, it fits 6 limgraves. So that makes the dlc 1/6 of the entire map

It's going to be bigger than limgrave. Not only would the dlc be too small otherwise, but looking at the map from the trailer it looks much bigger. I think a better way to compare is Miyazaki's statement "there are going to be more than 10 bosses". I'm pretty sure he meant main bosses and not in total, because, again, that would be too small, so if we count only important bosses that's roughly a third of the base game.
