What Movies Mean To Me: Gena Rowlands 

It's hard to believe that Gena has never won an Academy Award....she is truly one of the greats...I adore her ~

John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands are the single most fascinating couple to me. What an adventurous life: they did what they fucking wanted to do without caring about the system or about what anybody else thought. And from that courage they opened doors and inspired the next generation. Also, it is so beautiful a couple that works together. His movies and her characters, after you watch them, become part of your growth and your soul. I didn’t have anyone to tell me: “trust your instincts” and “work hard for what you love and don’t loose time with nothing else”. It took me a good deal of time to discover these, but I'll certainly tell that to my children: hear others, grab information, but ultimately follow your instincts, because your sense of things is the only thing you have for certain, everything else could be not even real, your senses are really all you got.

I became a fan in 1980 after seeing "Gloria". it's still a favorite all time movie.

The first time I saw Gena Rowlands was in "A Child Is Waiting" with Burt Lancaster and Judy Garland . Burt played a man who ran a State Funded house for challenged children and Judy played a woman who just a position there . And Gena Rowlands played the mother of one of the children who had to stay there . Gena played maybe the most dramatic roles in the film . "A Child Is Waiting" is a heart wrenching true story that is not for everyone . I have watched everything that Gena Rowlands has done since then . I also like her husband she was married to at the time John Cassevettes . She was married to him until he passed away.

Being honest, she was the most outstanding actress of the second half of the 20th Century. And maybe, her role in A women under the influence is is the most perfect female performance in the history of cinema. Congratulations, Ms. Rowlands.

I love her so much. Their sort of de-glam Hollywood is the most chic and glamorous some how. I would love to find the clip from broadway treasures where she talks about herself and Cassavetes both playing on Broadway and after the show they'd grab a quick bite and go to the movies until sunrise then go home sleep and do it again the next day. Just imagining all those Times Square theaters open all night and these two people taking in everything they see sounds like a great time. To be so enthusiastic about your craft and feeding off each other's passion sounds really exciting.

There are several outside projects that Gena & John participated in, which are just excellent. Paul Mazursky’s “Tempest” is among the very best. The music, scenery and dialogue represent the best of what a filmmaker produces.. John starred in a highly underrated film called “Marvin And Tige” with Gibron Brown. I'm SO glad she chose to focus on A Woman Under The Influence. Her performance in Opening Night is every bit as strong but AWUTI is the one that means most to me because of personal family experiences. So much so, I wrote to her just recently to tell her so! It's a truly brilliant piece of work that I don't think any other actress on the planet could've matched. Have to say, I would've preferred this without the saccharine piano track. It doesn't suit Gena and her work at all. But hey, it's good quality besides that. :)
