GM issued a Technical Service Bulletin addressing this behavior on May 16, 2023. #PIT6018: IPC display and radio blank, no audio , OnStar will not set up or connect, typically found during PDI. Cause: Logic lock up usually due to low voltage. Correction: Disconnect the battery for 15 minutes and reconnect. Recheck the functions. If function has returned check for software updates and attempt to complete the set up. If issue is not resolved or there are codes now stored perform published diagnostics.

You should always disconnect the negative side first. Because if the handle of your ratchet hits the metal panel while connected to the positive, the battery will try to weld it to the frame and damage anything metal it touches. Remember the negative is grounded throughout the body. This is a mechanic thing.

@@kx8960 If the BMW manual actually says to DISCONNECT the positive battery cable first, then apparently yes, I am smarter than the BMW Engineers. Ha. My guess is you are misreading/misinterpreting the manual or are talking about the directions for CONNECTING a battery. For CONNECTING a battery, you first put on the positive cable and then negative. For DISCONNECTING a battery, you first remove the negative cable and then the positive. That, or there is a typo in your manual. There is no logical explanation to break a circuit by disconnecting the positive first since one could more easily cause a spark, damage electronics, etc. When disconnecting a battery, removing the negative cable first avoids all that.

Hi Andre. This issue with your truck could also be a classic humidity issue where electronics can go bonkers for seemingly no reason at all. Humidity can affect electronics via poorly sealed cable harnesses, electronic PCBs (hopefully not), sensors, etc. The longer something is exposed to water or humidity, the worse the outcome can be. After electronics dry out the problems will likely go away unless corrosion has formed. Cycling power as you did with the battery can sometimes resolve the issue unitl it happens again. Hopefully it is a software glitch like others have said but since your truck has been exposed to a lot of rain recently, it cannot be ruled out as a possible cause.

And unlike Andres screen that has completely crashed. There’s less likelihood the entire dash on my truck will just die and not display any information. Agree with you. Computers are a funny thing these days. Disconnecting the Battery allowed for a Reset/Re-initialize of the Onboard Computers.

All makes and models have this issue. Most clusters are used in more than one make and model of vehicles. Sometimes you get a bad one and you sir got one. Easy fix for the service department.

Weird.. why would you disconnect the battery when you could have disconnected the fuse for the gauge cluster or run the infotainment reset procedure? Pulling the battery is one of the last things you do due to how hard it is on the computers. Also, when you disconnect a battery you start with the *NEGATIVE* terminal then remove the positive terminal.

The water is a worry. When the trucks go through flood waters we'll find out if it's just software or triggered by a short in a wiring harness.

Dealer would probably do the same thing and tell you it was much more involved to fix and if out of warranty would have charged an arm and a leg . Too much technology and not worth it

Great, they've turned trucks into devices that need hard reboots and software updates to maintain basic functionality. Welcome to dystopia.

Don't know why you didn't just disconnect the negative terminal. Seems like more work to get to the positive terminal, when the negative terminal would have performed the same operation.

You're not supposed to leave stuff plugged into your OBD port. That could be the cause of your electrical gremlins. OBD ports are for diagnostics, not running devices 24/7.

damn, any issues with a new vehicle are heart breaking. my dad worked for GM for 45 years & i have sworn off all GM products due to the lifetime of trash interior quality. They make amazing motors, but lack is so many other ways. my brother's gm 1500 is on it's 4th rear-end, all warranty replaced. i genuinely hope GM turns the corner at some point, but cost cutting measures & cheap components that check off the boxes on the sales sheet has been their way for almost my entire lifetime. Now in the age of software, you'd hope they would get that right, hopefully they can push an update for it

Banks gauge, Ultragauge, whatever external display plugged into the OBDII port, can freak out modern built-in displays. Leave the Banks gauge disconnected.

Could have been a short from water exposure, confusing the computer. Modern cars use CANbus for almost everything (including sensors, lights, cameras, etc.). A corrupt data packet or incorrect voltage from one of the subsystems could cause the computer to freakout and behave unpredictably. CAN data corruption is also used to launch attacks on automobile computers for theft or mischief.

I've had something kinda similar happen a couple times on our '23 Suburban. I, nor the dealership ever found the exact cause, but disconnecting the battery resolved it and it hasn't happened since the vehicle's last software update, so my best guess is that it is something software related.

Bad battery connections? possibly the battery could be going bad in one cell. Have the battery checked by Dealer. Modern electronics in cars/trucks require proper voltage to function properly. OEM batteries are not great to begin with.

I was so hoping to buy the new 2023 Chevy Trax either the fully digital Activ trim or the 2RS model with old school analog gauges. Shankar scared of vehicles with digital gauges for this exact reason of glitches while driving so if there’s no traffic to keep up with I’ll either be speeding or going below the speed limit. Ha!

Are general motors made a big mistake by doing that with the instrument cluster should've been traditional instrument cluster for most gauges they could have a Digital info center area. But speedometer tack temperature gauges should've been all traditional. They have to to reboot the system and disconnect the battery and hook it back up reboot it like a computer that's why they should not have went that route.
