During our last family outing we visited an archaeological site in Songjiang District.
As we took in the sites I asked the kids some questions about living in China. Language, friends and getting their picture taken...what do they really think?
Hope. you are all having an amazing week!
xoxo

Chinese is one of the five official languages of the United Nations, and it is recognized as the most difficult language in the world. English is the easiest, so it is normal not to be able to understand Chinese. If the children go to school in China, they can go to an international school. International schools teach in pure English. If you are only traveling in China, you don’t need to learn Chinese, you just need to learn a little bit about it. If you don't put in effort and interest, you can't learn Chinese. But once you learn Chinese, it is equivalent to opening a window to another world.

Please consider public Chinese school, letting your kids integrate in Chinese culture and letting them learn the language is a huge gift. Even if you're only planning on staying a year, public school will still be beneficial, with immersion a language can be learnt in 3 months or a year. With international school they may never learn Chinese even staying there for a decade. Of course it's your decision, I'm sorry for being annoying about this, but I know kids who have done both and so have I.

In the 80's when our generation of Chinese college graduates went abroad to US to study, we generally had the dream that we would become the bridge between the two countries so people from both countries will get to know each other better and learn from each other so we can create a better future for the mankind. Gradually over the years and especially in last 6-7 years that hope has become more and more remote with so much negativities coming from the US sides towards China, both politicians (Republican as well as Democrat) and also many American public influenced by the bias media and the politicians looking for cheat shot.
@zeitgeistx5239
@zeitgeistx5239 Год назад
The “divisive fake news” is American political elites and political culture. From a geopolitical perspective the thought leaders and media of most white countries look down on China for the CCP and China’s economic power. So politics + xenophobia + insecurity about China’s raise.

What lovely kids you have! You must be a very proud mom. About language learning, the best thing about Chinese is that the grammar is super easy. No tense, no conjugation, no need to worry about singular or plural forms...all you need to do is just to put words together. Sometimes it is even OK if you put the words in a wrong order. Another convenient point in Chinese learning is about nouns and terms. You will have a general idea about what it is just by looking at the word itself, even though you may know nothing about this term. When I first started to learn English, I just couldn't understand why jaguar, puma, leopard, panther, cheetah...are all big cats, but these words have nothing in common. In Chinese, most nouns of the same type will share something in common, which will make them much easier to memorize.

Great to see your kids enjoying life there! They're really cute. Look on the brighter side of learning Chinese characters. You'll be able to read 40%+ of the Japanese depending on the way it's written. As the Japanese Kanjis are actually Chinese characters. Compared to other parts of China, Shanghai has a very short history. What makes Shanghai great is its openess, reception and fusion of all cultures around China and abroad. A phrase is mentioned quite often, 海納百川(here 海 is the second character of Shanghai), meaning the ocean receives hundreds of rivers. I'm sure Shanghai people are also happy and thankful you are bringing your part from America. I have always enjoyed your videos. Great pick of music!

I experienced similar things when I first went to the US for high school and college. Could not really understand what my American classmates are talking and hard to make friends. Just be open minded, be brave, and try to talk to native speakers as much as you can. They know your are foreigner and can tolerate your broken language. As time goes by, you will get better and better. Never sit in your comfort zone and only use the language you are comfortable with, otherwise, you never master the language and will regret in the future.

I have the same experience as you. Though I was lucky having some friends who speak my native language but it didn't help me in learning English at all. Until the days I went to college where I am surrounded by English speakers, that was when my English learning spike up so much and become a lot more proficient. Some advice I've learned for people learning a new language, if you spend 50% effort in reading/writing/listening, you got to spend the same amount of time in speaking. This is how you can be good in a language. Otherwise, you will not able to communicate with people even though you understand what they are saying.

Going abroad brings in so much wonderful experience, so many challenges which you would never think about, so much joy and self consciousness of who you are, what you want to be and where the limit of your potential is. It is definitely an eye opener. You will thank yourself for the experience and knowledge you acquire abroad when you get older. One suggestion, don't be shy, go talk to young Chinese folks. They can actually speak simple English. Learning Chinese by socializing with other Chinese kids is way quicker than learning from books.

as an chinese international student in the us, i can relate to the feeling of being in another country where ppl don't really speak your mother language. sometimes I hear Americans talking about "ohh Chinese students always stick together as a group do they not speak English?" some of them even imply that if they just stick together they shouldn't come to study abroad at the first place. but as a non-native English speaker it takes a lot of courage to talk to native speakers or even chitchat in the very beginning. i jush wish more ppl could be less judgemental and more open minded. tbh the mindset like "why dont they speak English" from a native English speaker even if they're in other countries where their official language is not english is kinda annoying.

It would be cool if your kids can learn Mandarin or at least enough of it to communicate basic stuff before you guy go back to the states in a few years. They will always be able to visit China again when they are older and already know how to speak the language.

Also, maybe we would like to watch some honest opinion ( from an American perspective) which aspects that China should work on more or improve more, I’d like to hear some critiques. That can be more meaningful and interesting to hear. I’m China Chinese btw. But I think there are many of my countrymen who don’t like to hear criticism so making such contents can be tricky because you might get a lot of hateful comments. 😢 but Im sure there are those who really like to hear honest opinions on which areas that we need to improve because we like to see China continually progress.

Well, regarding to the "come here" and "go away" gestures, I guess there's some misunderstanding? I'm a native Chinese and I've never seen a body language like that and it's definately not a cultural thing.

Glad your family feel safe & happy there. And with open-mind parents with right choice & right advice so these lovely kids will become wiser when they’re growing up. 3 of them now is still kids & innocent with brightly minds. With good education & advice from family, not become like many Youngful Western nowadays in US with full of ignorant & bloody violent. If you’re settled down life in China for long terms, SHOULD lead your kids learning locals language. ITS NOT JUST GOOD FOR THEM AT STUDY, LEARNING NEW CULTURES BUT HELP THEM HAVE MORE CHANCE LATER FOR OPPORTUNITIES JOBS, CREATING SOCIAL LIFE & AVOID ISOLATION FEELINGS. Knowing more than 1 language is always good things & not wasting.

You have three very nice kids. Because of their limited social experience with local Chinese, it is very easy for them to misinterpret some of Chinese expressions. Curiosity with open mind, they will enjoy and appreciate different cultures.

Suggestion to the kids: most Chinese kids study English as their second language, but they are just as shy and unconfident about speaking it as you may be about Chinese. So if you try a little Chinese and English, it can warm the situation.

Oh interesting that the gesture to come here is shown as pushing you away. Not sure if I experienced that when I was in Asia. It's more like they wave to come here with palm down and if done too fast, it might look like their hand is shown as pushing out instead of inwards.

I think your kids misunderstood the hand gesture for come here. In the West you would have your palm face upwards and flip your palm inward but in China not all, they would have the back of their hand face upwards and flip the palm inward. Different cultures have different ways of during things.
