WHAT NEXT FOR THE HONEY BADGER? Opinions on Daniel Ricciardo's Late Season Axe

He smiles a lot, he won Monza, and he's funny. Words that often describe Ricciardo. But his return to the Red Bull dysfunctional family after years away at Enstone and Woking haven't been the fairytale route back to the senior team he would have wanted. While Perez has been terrible, Ricciardo hasn't quite justified himself as Perez's replacement.
So what next? Indy? NASCAR? Broadcasting? And does this expose some major flaws in Red Bull's system? Let's have a look...
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

Red Bull will become a much better place once Helmut is gone. His “style” of basically pitting all of his drivers against each other has destroyed more good personalities than its helped. Which is why Red Bull has too few team players amongst its drivers. On one hand you’ll have the team telling a driver to let their team mate by and then after the fact Marko using it against them. “Why did he beat you this race?” “Because you told me to let him by or I wouldn’t have a seat next week…”
@craigcharlesworth1538

Hulkenberg has already proved that you can super-sub your way back into F1, but he got lucky in that his period in the wilderness coincided with Covid meaning that there were loads of opportunities to stand in, more than you'd usually see. Also Hulk clearly still has pace whereas Daniel, much as I love him, has looked pretty washed since the McLaren switch. I do find it odd that of the four Red Bull contracted drivers it's Daniel, and not Perez who's performance has been abysmal this season, to get the chop.
@markalbert9011

Something about not being able to get a handle on the McLaren got to his confidence. I think that's why Marko wanted him gone. Not the first or the last driver to self doubt himself out of a ride. I'm a huge fan and look forward to The Honey Badger's next stop, hopefully IndyCar.

Daniel hasn't lost pace completely. Mexico 2023 qualifying: 4th, Miami sprint qualifying and race: 4th in both. Also since Canada, Daniel has usually been the better RB driver. He fared better relative to Tsunoda than Perez did relative to Verstappen obviously. Plus Red Bull knows that Ricciardo would've been very quick in the RB20 (2023 Silverstone tire test stories) so they could've dropped Checo and moved Daniel up for 6 races as an all-or-nothing move. If he cooks podiums and top 5s, he is well and truly back. If not, dropped entirely.

If I remember correctly Norris said that Sainz's experience at Red Bull is why he doesn't want to join the team. It's not that he's afraid of Verstappen, he simply doesn't like the ruthlessness and favouritism (though that is a bit ironic considering how he's supposedly being favoured by the McLaren team now in the hopes that he'll win the WDC this year).

Dan did well in those 2014-2016 cars. Like Vettel did in the blown diffuser cars. It makes it seem like he lost it, but the cars moved away from his sweet spot. It happens. He didn't lose as much as it seems. No idea how much it plays a part, but he's last of the generation that didn't come up with good sims. Younger drivers can iterate and adapt just a bit quicker. Honestly, I think Daniel getting kicked was because of Perez, but not for the reasons you might think. Perez's poor quali made it clear to Red Bull that replacing him was becoming more and more realistic. With Ricciardo underperforming compared to Yuki, they needed Lawson in the car to compare the two before the 2025 season to see who would get the Red Bull seat. Red Bull didn't want an Albon Gasly situation where the faster driver was in the sister team so they're putting them head to head now to see who should be promoted.

Penske (Power, mclaughlan, and newgarden) and Andretti (Herta, Kirkwood, and Ericsson) have they're 3 drivers locked in for 2025. Ganassi have locked in 2 (Dixon and Palou). Mclaren have locked in their 3 (O'Ward, Siegal, and Lundgaard). Foyt have locked in there 2 with ferucci and malukas. Meyer shank have rosenqvist and Armstrong. @@AlfredTheGreatestEver All true (though I think Ganassi still has a 3rd seat they could run), but if Penske - as the series owner - can’t find a way to leverage the backing he has to get one of them to run another seat or at least a technical alliance with a smaller team, with the money, fans and media presence he would bring, that’s a huge missed opportunity
@AlfredTheGreatestEver

@dancallahan4183 it's 100% a missed opportunity and it's completely self imposed. Penske could run the 22 car for DRic as they did for years for Simon pagenaud. But they announced the charter system like last week stopping them doing that 😆 they already have a technical partnership with Foyt and both of their drives are taken. Ganassi has 1 spot left and the last ex f1 driver he hired won the 500 (Ericsson) so it would Ebay grest to see that happen. I just don't see it, Ericsson came from Arrow SP before stepping up.
@mikehardy1912
@mikehardy1912 7 часов назад
@@dancallahan4183Indycar isn't an option for Ricciardo for many different reasons including the new charter system in place for 2025 and the fact any available seats in Indycar requires the driver to bring funding. Red Bull pulled out of the American motorsports market well over a decade ago and have no interest in returning to sponsor any team in North American motorsports including in Nascar or Indycar. Visa isn't a brand that would be interested in Indycar as a market to promote their brand as Americans use local banking institutions to source a credit card and most Americans don't even hold a Visa credit card. Americans are more than likely to hold and use a Nationwide Bank, Fifth Third Bank or a PNC Bank credit card then a Visa credit card. Visas F1 involvement wasn't solely based on the American market but also included the international exposure that F1 can bring. Indycar doesn't have that international exposure and is primarily a North American based motorsports series. Penske downsized from 4 cars to 3 and Penske has made it clear that they don't plan to expand beyond 3 cars even for the indy 500.

It's rather disgusting that RB is keeping Checo because he is Mexican and his home GP is coming up. Worst of all, Checo is far below his contractual minimums, has cost RB the WCC, may have demoted them from 1st to 4th by end of season and he is running away the World Destruction Championship at $4.5 million with 6 races left. Kinda looks like RB is throwing the WCC to get more testing time to fix their correlation issues.....

I had a similar conspiracy theory regarding Aston Martin for the past 2 seasons: they start off strong but then drop off like a cliff and I can't help but think that it might be intentional to give themselves more wind tunnel and CFD time (sounds dumb I know but that's why I call it a conspiracy theory). And with Newey coming they might even sandbag just to give themselves as much time as possible.

There's one thing nobody is talking about. Maybe Yuki is a lot better than people are giving him credit for. No one is talking about him ever getting a drive with the main team. why not, is it because he's Honda's boy and not Dr Marko's ??? I also think that it was Renault who chased Vettel away from Red Bull, not Danny Ric, as he could see just how far behind with the Hybrid power units Renault were. In saying that, I am a huge Danny Ric fan, and am gutted that he's going to be leaving the sport, but, I guess, thems the breaks. The age old saying of, "The stopwatch never lies, you're either fast enough or not", applies here. I just hope for Lawson's sake that he is. If not though, you have to wonder where Red Bull will turn next. Maybe designing a front suspension, as all four cars use the same, that only one driver can handle properly, (Well could), wasn't the best idea, maybe they should have listened to Checo, when he started to struggle last year, and not Max, who was telling them how great the car was!!!!

At this point it will be for the best if Red Bull ends its junior program or scale it down to support 2-3 drivers at best who are 100% F1 worthy. Overr the past few years they had drivers like Jehan Daruvala and Dennis Hauger, who were never F1 material to begin with. And what's the point of having dozen of drivers in F2/F3 when it's not a sure thing that they'll reach the 'promised land' I think the FIA needs to take a good look at the Formula 2 Championship and the way the championship operates. As things stand, the reigning champion is not allowed to defend his title. Perhaps FIA/FOM should take a page out of FIM/Dorna's playbook and make F2 more like what the Moto2 class is to MotoGP, which doesn't have restrictions for the defending champion - if F1 is out of reach for drivers like Drugovich or Pourchaire (TBH winning the title in their respective third years in the series didn't help them either), then let them defend their title. Don't think that kind of restriction existed back when F3000 was the final stepping stone.

The depiction of Ricciardo being beaten by Tsunoda all season is inaccurate. Yes, Tsunoda came out hot to start the season and it was looking like he was going to wipe the floor with Ricciardo. As the season progressed however, Ricciardo performed much better, including a stretch from Canada through Singapore where he beat Tsunoda 6-3. Remembering what happened in Hungary with the terrible last second box call on a weekend where Ricciardo out-quali'd Tsunoda and was well out ahead of Tsunoda when the box call comes, he likely finishes ahead of Tsunoda which would make the stretch 7-2. That's significant! It just seems that when Tsunoda does well, it's a big deal and when Ricciardo does well it's treated like "well, he's supposed to". Then there's the 24 second pit stop in Saudi, week 5 in China where Ricciardo is flying (and was about to overtake Tsunoda after pitting first before Tsunoda boxes - this would have been the only legit overtake of one over the other all season) before Stroll does Stroll things and inexplicably ends his race. All in all, this is how their head to head stands over the entire season (asterisks where they are deserved).. TSU RIC Bahrain 1 * RIC did not pass on merit, should have let them race Saudi 1 Australia 1 Japan 1 China 0 0 * RIC was having his first strong weekend and likely beats TSU before Stroll does Stroll stuff Miami 1 * Honorable mention for RIC sprint performance Emila Rom 1 Monaco 1 Canada 1 Spain 1 Austria 1 Silverstone 1 Hungary 1 * Terrible box call, RIC was ahead of TSU the entire weekend Belgium 1 Zandvoort 1 Monza 1 Baku 1 Singapore 1 9 TSU vs 8 RIC for those scoring at home. Lopsided in TSU favor to start the season, but certainly in RIC's favor as the season has progressed. With COTA and MEX next, RIC likely adds 2 more to his tally since he loves both tracks. Before anyone mentions points, the points are a representation of the VCARB car against the rest of the midfield. VCARB looked great early, and TSU cashed in. Eventually, the teams like Williams, Haas and even Alpine got their acts together and scored points. As the season progressed it became increasingly difficult for EITHER driver to score points, which also worked against perceptions of RIC as this period of better competition is when his form improved. This is not to say Ricciardo wow'd all season, he had moments but was simply not consistent enough, he has to own that. But context matters, at least to me. I hate bandwagon rhetoric that has no evidence to support it. In either case, its certainly not nearly as bad as it's made out to be. Especially when you consider that Sergio Perez hasn't been on the podium since week 5, think about that for a second...yeah I am not kidding....go look it up! To go even further, from week 6 in Miami onward, Perez has delivered these masterpieces.... P5 Miami P8 Emilia Romana DNF Monaco qualified 16 accident with Kmag (why are you near Kmag again?) DNF Montreal qualified 16, spun solo and hit the wall 8 Spain 7 Austria 17 Silverstone 7 Hungary 7 Belgium 6 Netherlands 8 Monza DNF Baku (accident w/Sainz) 10 Singapore Most of these same races, Max is on the podium or outright winning with no teammate strategy to use. By no means am I expecting Perez to beat Max, but he can barely even keep the car in the top 10. He is consistently the slowest car of the top 4 teams. How is this level of poor form in such a good car overlooked? Ultimately, it can't be denied that the VCARB team is meant for driver evaluation, so its clear that Ricciardo had to be moved eventually. But it should have meant moving him to Red Bull and allowing Lawson to be evaluated at VCARB midseason onward. Its hard to make sense of why this wasn't done in the face of Perez' poor 2nd half of the 2023 season and continued slump in 2024. Last season, Max literally outscored the entire field, no harm, no foul. But this year, 100% Perez is costing Red Bull the constructors, FACT, end of sentence. Swapping in Ricciardo was the decision that makes this all completely avoidable, instead they botched it and embarrassed the guy. I have a little feeling Red Bull is going to regret it, all them eggs in Lawson's basket...

No one wants to talk about how much Danny ricc cost the teams in salary. Because he’s a race winner with a literal decade of exp, && a hugely popular personality to boot, he was hella expensive to sign. For the amount they were paying him, especially McLaren, they had higher expectations than from even Lando and yuki. The more exp u have & the more you demand in pay, the lower the variance there should be from Grand Prix to Grand Prix. That is the biggest difference between a rookie and a vet w/ (half) a decade worth of WDCs under their belt - the vet doesn’t make mistakes. They also tend to extract far more from the car at the limit than the rookie, but that isn’t always the case. It’s being perfect at the limit that sets these guys apart. Danny Ricc was simply juice not worth the squeeze.

I think Danny would have been better off in the Red Bull, but that’s the way they do things in that shitshow of an organisation. Them’s the breaks. He SHOULD have done better, and he’s certainly a faster and more aggressive driver than Checo on paper, and probably more likely to be a 75%-90% Max in a Max car. A sort of Medium-High Verstappen if you like. I hope Max doesn’t end up having a kid called Eleven... If Checo says “bollocks to the lot of you, I’m off” after a heroic Mexico victory I still think they’d try to bring Danny back because they’ll go to any lengths not to let Yuki even get a whiff of Milton Keynes’ air.

I disagree with your take on the Red Bull driver program. I look at the grid and I see 6 guys (including Max) who were brought into the sport by Red Bull. Red Bull invested in them, developed them, and they're now F1 drivers. Some of their juniors are also performing well in other series. To me that makes it a successful junior program: It's developing a lot of talent and making multiple series better. I don't blame other programs for focusing on fewer drivers that they want specifically for their F1 team, but I like Red Bull's method more.

As an American, I would like to see Ricciardo follow in the footsteps of Juan Pablo Montoya & go directly from F1 to NASCAR. Ricciardo joining NASCAR would give that series a spike in popularity internationally particularly in Australia/New Zealand due to SVG also racing in the Cup Series. There are a few teams in NASCAR that would jump at the chance to sign him most notably 23XI (the team owned by Michael Jordan) who are rumored to take their #50 car & make it a full time ride for next season (the #50 is currently a part time ride only used at road courses).

I’d put Daniel in there for the remainder of the season, let Lawson prove himself against Tsunoda. Daniel in that seat has a chance to snatch it back. Job done and maybe earns another year. If he’s no better than Perez, Lawson or Tsunoda earn the promotion

Another angle here about this as well is the fact that before the summer break, all signs seemed to indicate Daniel was gonna swap places with Checo. If that’s true, then the way Red Bull has handled this makes everything so much worse.

I think people need to stop getting their panties in a twist as if somebody died every time an F1 driver leaves the scene. Even if they didn't complete a season, ex-F1 drivers are a hot commodity elsewhere. Let's not pretend WEC, Indy, FE or TCR are easy series without talent. Dani will find something else and he'll kick ass once again. Also, I think Verstappen leaving F1 entirely is a question of when rather than if.

The most shocking thing about this is that, even though Ricciardo was a RB talent who felt he needed a change and went to Renault first and McLaren later, he came back to F1 replacing De Vries for bad performance and the team actually put faith in him for the rest of 2023 and 2024. Not even his status as former protegée of Red Bull saved him from losing his seat and the way it is done by the team... it's just awful. And moreso, if Ricciardo was sacked like this, with his background, what's to say other junior drivers will be shown the same patience?

One of the most overrated drivers ever. He's always been a nice personality, but the man has always been less than his hype, not a good f1 driver. man should have retired half a decade ago, but I don't blame him for a second for milking the f1 gravy train for a second. I hate that it's claimed are the '20 best drivers on the planet', they're really not, but the man has made a fortune from it and I don't blame it, but I literally can't see him getting a drive in some other race series, let alone him getting a drive and succeeding. Bye Danny Ric, remembering you as an elite of the sport is a farce, remembering you as a man who made a career out of F1 is enviable

Whilst I know F1 is not a 'cuddly' industry, Red Bull's lack of professionalism is still disappointing. They seem to have forgotten that carrying on like this is what lost Williams Adrian Newey... and their engine supplier... and their star drivers (...wait a second...). It's one thing to fire an underperforming driver, but Red Bull's habit of just not telling people they're fired and the seemingly toxic working culture they have will come back to haunt them. Arguably it already is.

Danny is probably the closest I come to being a fan of a driver, but a) when was the Danny we know and love on the grid for the last time? It was more depressing than up lifting to watch him. b) him getting booted is understandable. But I also think, Perez was worse. Kick Perez, Promote Yuki, Get Lawson in Yukis car and give Danny a little good bye tour where you sell all the merch in the world. Evaluate at the end of the year and either put that angry frensh man in the MinRB next to lawson or yuki back to minRB and get Bottas or whatever. Also, if RB can boot their favorite son, you Lawrence can do so too. Give Lance the boot, please.

He was my favourite driver when he was at Red Bull and Renault but unfortunately he's been a shadow of his former self for a while now, it's the right call to give Liam Lawson a shot. He proved last year he deserves another chance in F1. Whether he sinks or swims we'll see I suppose. Hindsight is 20/20 of course but Danny should not have gone to McLaren, I still think he bailed on Renault a bit too quickly.

I'd argue that the Perez' situation is quite different. For one it's a given that no F1 car is exactly the same as the other, being hand made and having thousands of different setups but on Red Bull things got to a point that Verstappen's car was literally a new version while Perez' was still the old model - so how can one compare their results? Though yeah his mistakes are 100% on him, absolutely! About Ricciardo... he is funny and he seems to be a nice guy but results are what matters and he stopped giving results when he left Red Bull. That being said the choice for the seat is never 100% based on results - as pointed out with the F2 drivers who 'graduated' and why Perez wasn't sacked yet: they have to cater for the audience so they can be 'solda' as advertisers for the brand. Point being: it's a mixed bag that we will never fully know what's what and the only thing that could keep a driver in his seat would be great results which Daniel has not provided.
