I met Mike Holmes at a home expo in Montreal a few years ago. He's a larger-than-life yet very humble man and easy to speak to. I've really appreciated his shows over the years.
I’ve watched Mike for years. I’m a retired electrician and I really appreciate his efforts to improve the trades, it’s sad that most of our builders and contractors don’t have any interest in doing things better.
I love watching his shows, I enjoyed the lake home that they did and ended up keeping and when they did the his son’s home. Tho I have watched all of his shows over and over so many times, I never get tired of seeing them!!
Hes a Great Guy who gives more than half of his salary to be less fortunate.. very Beautiful guy who is blessed and pays it forward with his own Money and life God bless him for all he does in his every day life..
Doing things right... is just the right thing to do. Supporting trades as a career choice, supporting proper training, safety, supporting diversity and inclusion in the building trades, all should just be 'the way it is'. Sadly, for a long time it was not the way it was... and hopefully he has helped educate and inform enough to swing things in the right direction. I have seen him speak live at an event here many years ago... he is the same in person, answering questions as he is on his shows. Matter of fact, friendly and a good sense of humor. Honestly, I am pretty sure he is just a good guy all around. The Reggae thing just seals the deal.
I’ve seen Holmes on Homes , Homes Inspection and that’s about it I really need to watch the other shows. What I like about Mike is he’s honest and isn’t there to clam it up for the cameras.
I would like to submit that it would be impossible for Mike Holmes to begin on a project, and at about 85% or so, politely tell them that he's completed his portion and it's ready for the next person to start (or finish) the job. When I watched him on his different shows, it would usually go like this; we can tear it down, fix the small hole and it'll probably be fine. Or we can do a complete demo and put everything new, with the higher quality workmanship. What should we do, Mike Holmes?? I not only know which choice he would pick, but it's not the reason one might expect. I suspect that he might have a mild to slightly moderate condition known as OCD. (Obsessive compulsive disorder) it has many different forms and severity goes from unnoticed right up to incessant babbling, and everything in between. Now, obviously Mike's, if he indeed has it or is on the spectrum, then it would most certainly be a mild case. For Mike to only do a certain amount of a project and letting others finish it, coupled with the fact that he's still unsure if the original issue with the repair got fixed or not?? I'm sorry but I don't think his brain could just walk away without a correct, quality repair, and making sure it all worked perfectly. It is impossible for Mike Holmes to cut corners, even insignificant, small issues that isn't structural. I think he would dwell on it constantly until he said, that's it! We gotta gut that bathroom and start from scratch and "make it right". And that's not an insult to Mike Holmes in any way. He's just to professional and he has integrity. These days... well, it's a hard find, sometimes. Congratulations on being a person who not only talks the talk, but you walk the walk as well! You keep storing those heavenly treasures. All the best to you and your family.....d.
She never mentioned, and I could be wrong. But from what I understand is Mike was first on a show by Jon Eakes. Pitched his idea to some big wigs and it took off. I feel bad that Jon Eakes was kinda left in the dust.
The problem is home owners and rental property owners treat trades like common trash they don't want to pay to have it done right and blame everybody else but themselves.
Interesting, I’m a Nescafé coffee drinker and I’ve yet to ever see the jars in this video. Must be eastern Canada and not Western. I buy the tall slim tins of Nescafé instant coffee and keep a spoon in the tin ready for use every morning. 😊
Mike knows his stuff for sure, but I didn’t like how he would crap on other peoples work. Some things were incorrect and was justified, but most people have limited budgets and it’s the contractors job to ensure it can be done within budget, so that means cheaper items(but not cut corners). Many shows mike would talk smack about work because it wasn’t “top of the line” products or just met codes. More power to him for repairs he did for home owners but his work always have the most expensive and fancy things that the original Reno could have never afforded to do.
I haven’t seen all of his shows, but I’ve seen a lot of his shows. I think he does a fair job of pointing out work done on a budget vs work done shoddily. If work is done to code on a budget, he doesn’t fault it. He does point out where corners were cut that hurt the home owners. And rightly so. There also may be times where he might be overly critical - which could be a product of him being a human being, the tv editing process, or both. By and large, he’s fair in his critiques.
Too bad he isn’t single! Don’t care about the money...I care about the fact that he has every characteristic in a man I would love to have in my significant other
Totally agree. He thinks contractors build everything the home owner said they built. He also rebuilds off of insurance and the shows money. Nothing ever comes out of his pocket, as he says sometimes. Home owners get what they pay for and sometimes the want it done cheap.
@@buildingtrades7070 ive seen too many things done wrong. Like screws in joist hangers. That's a big no no. Fence panels touching the ground. But ppl believe him, because he talks like hes doing the right thing. Truth is hes not as knowledgeable as he or others believe him to be. Cant fault the guy, you cant know everything in this field. You have to have your specialty and stick to it. Its like a doctor trying to work in all fields of medicine, or a lawyer in all aspects of law. Just too vast to know it all. But i do think its disingenuous to claim to be better than other contractors and to crap on others work. Truth is they should be teaching ppl not to go with the lowest bidder, watch out for red flags and learn how to compare apples to apples on an estimate. Vast majority of ppl will just look for the cheapest price than say they got ripped off. Cant have a ferrari on a kia budget.
@@buildingtrades7070 There actually have been quite a few times when he has spent his own money to help a family. He's been to court to testify against bad contractors.
If Mike is so great why did he "stiff" most of the contractors in his original series "Holmes on homes" that he had on his show and why did he face so many laws suits from home owners? One or two of each might be able to be explained but "if ten thousands people tell you that you have a tail then maybe you need to look at your backside".
@@michaelvanhorn3271 Maybe on paper but come on!, he was much more than an employee of the show. I have a good friend who did work several times on the show. It is a fact that a ton of trades did work on the show, joined it on the strength of their relationship with Mike and got screwed. Maybe he was an employee from an accounting point of view but holy heck man, the show was "Holmes on Homes"! not "some guy on homes". He had the ability to influence things and chose not to. He definitely lacked ethics and is a narcissistic individual that caused a lot of suffering for both the trades and the home owners involved in the show. I could see if there were only a half a dozen law suits but it was enough to cause the demise of the show. That ego maniac was a real embarrassment for Canada. The sooner he fads into anonymity the better.
I've known tradesmen personally that say he's a piece of shit, and I've been told hes been sued more than you can imagine. He's stiffed contractors and left homeowners hanging on the hook for incomplete projects and basically blackmails them for full payment for the work to continue.. second hand information yes, but ive heard far too much of it for it to be coincidence.
Its a very easy job criticising other peoples work, you can never be wrong....I remember an episode where instead of repairing shoddy work, he builds a house from scratch , the way it 'should' be done , according to him... and guess what...it went WAY over budget , cost $1m? To build it when a normal house cost 500k , so, yeah, who can afford that.....
I can't watch his shows anymore. No doubt he has a lot of knowledge, but he spends at least half of each show tearing down other contractors. I would rather learn how to do things properly from the beginning than listen to his rants. Maybe he should watch This Old House and see how they deal with subpar contractors. One is a learning show, one is a BS reality show TV.
Love mike butt why is his name associated with the builder Empire?these houses will never last 30 yrs or even 20 I bet..throw away housing like the society we live in today
2:05 David Suzuki, looks like one of those Cheech and Chong dudes, or maybe his brother........get a haircut, and look respectable, DOCTOR.....dolittle......
I always thought he was a blow hard. Arrogant and insulting. I've been in the trades for awhile and own my own business and I never bad mouth the previous "tradesman" because you never know. Glad he's making money, but I wouldn't trust him.
Yeas, I get the impression he goes to jobs where the home owner has had work done, they accepted the lowest quote and then complain that the work is shoddy and want mike to fix it, you get what you pay for... if any of these home owners had to pay for mikes work they wouldnt have got him to do the job...
