one time in my band class this guys pad fell out of the octave key thingy and their dad glued an eraser where the pad was supposed to be. Later the BD had to tell the class to not their parents touch their instruments.
Thanks Sarg!!! Liked the part of hot water. I did that to two soprano mouthpieces, boiling it to clean it and that was the end of them. The tips bended. They were both Sugals. I'll probably boil them again to see if they return to their original form, ha,ha,ha...

At one of our local high school band competitions a saxophone was damaged. It is body and key damage. The horn belong to one of the band parents who was helping and now we need to get it fixed if even possible. The horn means a lot to the parent who is retired military. He is a great guy and has loaned dozens of instruments to our band over the years. We live in columbia SC and looking for a local guy to do the repair can you recommend anyone or if someone knows who to take it to.

I've been told keys down to stop the palm keys from bending, and that the keys are guarded cause of the guards and that the end of the rods are sturdy. I've recently looked online to make sure that it was correct, but I've seen two different arguments. But since you know what you're doing, I thought I'd ask you
Good question. Our shop has never had to repair a sax that was set down incorrectly, but from being struck or dropped. And so it doesn't really matter but I lay it down with palm keys upwards. If a sax key bends that easily when you set it down then I would get another sax!
Dude @2:37 I have that problem my bell is dented and I'm scared it's gonna cost too much to fix. Please tell me what the ranges of cost would be or is there just no way to fix it
reminds how my school was, we got broken and non-working Bass Clarinets and tenor saxes but we got like 4 new Tenorbass trombones, 6 euphoniums, 4 mellophones, 2 double horns, 6 sousaphones, 6 tubas, and 6 marching baritones. We got two clarinets and one flutes and two altos. Nothing else. Hmmm I wonder if my director favors the brass at all....
Kisa Kurosaki there are several reasons your key will work but the pinky key will not depress. try to press it down and follow the path (watch which bars, pads, etc are connecting) and should be moving. you could have a bent rod or one of the keys is bent or even a post having come lose from the body or the rod not screwed into the post correctly. it could also be out of adjustment, if your repair shop can't find the problem try another. I wouldn't suggest trying to fix it yourself when you find the problem as you can cause more harm than good, but at least you will be able to tell the repair person what you found
I'm wondering, what would be a quick fix to a key/pad that doesn't close all the way? I'm having that same issue (the pad that opens when you play the side B-flat)
MSG, Thank you for the uniformed instruction. How do you repair the request of a family who's asked us to not shove a digital speaker into the bell of the bugle. I'm Infantry and I can play a bugle. Was not permitted to do so and yes, I made calls for hours. The U.S. Army Band required accreditation for that and I understand why. No Soldier goes to their unit without proper accreditation. No Warrior goes to battle without proper affiliation. No American comes back without a band... of brotherhood.
i have some scratches on the top of my mouthpiece from when i first started playing (obviously i bit to hard) and marching season is coming up soon, and i want to get it fixed. any ideas? its made from plastic. or should i just buy a new one? is any mouthpiece compatible with any sax? im only in 9th grade and been playing with the same sax and mouthpiece for 4 years.
My sax isn't broken but it's pretty darn old. Almost The whole thing has tarnished and I want to know if I can take this off without having to disassemble it or take it anywhere to get cleaned. Someone help!
Viktor Nikiforov you can wipe the tarnish off with a sulfur based tarnish remover but be careful about the pads don’t use to much and make sure you wipe it off
today, I was given "to try" an old Horner Alto Saxophone, by a well meaning friend. It has a lot of issues, even to my inexperienced eye. I'm thinking that the cleaning and repair of this instrument would be as costly as buying a new one (low range price). Fair statement?
exactly. he made us stand at attention for 15 minutes and if we moved, then he added an extra 30 seconds. i mean come on some of us are out of shape, considering it was the summer. all because a couple people were 5 minutes late getting to the field for marching practice. he said if we cant take it then just walk on home. we have the best high school band in the parish, but seriously. it doesnt have to be this strict
thats crazy. they bought some new mellophones, but nobody has been allowed to use them yet!! the main band director is mainly woodwind player, but the second band director, the one who teaches us the majority of the time the "main band director" is in her office dealing with band finances and setting up events for us to play and competitions for us. the one that teaches us is a trombone player. he tells the mellophones and saxes that we suck and if we cant play the part then just sit out
my friends sax is in the shop, so the band director told him to use the schools sax. well his ligature has a missing screw, so instead of buying a new one, he is currently using a rubber band ligature and my reed on his mouthpiece on a 20 year old bundy 2 that has most of the lacquer removed and most of the keys are leaking and it is leaking from the bell curve at the bottom. its sad when the school cant pay to get their own instruments fixed. but hey the crappy french horns got new instruments
had a guy in our band. his neck cork came in glued and fell off. so he found a piece of styrofoam cup and shaped it around the neck. held it together with a piece of scotch tape. and plays like that. never got it fixed. half of his keys don't even move when pressed so I guess it doesn't matter anyways. that instrument is toast.
Quick & easy fix for missing or loose cork is simply wrapping paper around that area before sliding on the mouthpiece. Sax is one of the easiest instruments to get a sound out of, which also makes it one of the hardest to keep in tune. So being able to adjust the mouthpiece is critical to good playing.
wow that's cruel for learning musicians, if y'all really do "suck" then tell her how you can only get better with the director teaching y'all or at least tell y'all what to practice. I mean c'mon, if they can do it, is telling them that they can't gonna help at all?

+Aubrey Thompson It is better to lay it on the key side. The rods and key guards are less likely to be damaged than the palm keys and the table keys (left pinky). Either way is not super safe, but on the key side is better, since the exposed parts are more durable. Also, if the guards are slightly bent, you can still play the horn; if a palm key or table key is bent, there will be a massive leak in the horn.
+Spontaneous Cinematics If you say so. I have support on this from professionals. The key guards and rods are flat, so setting flat guards and rods on a flat surface makes more sense than having the weight on the bell and palm keys. Again, enjoy your many many leaks on your low notes from unnecessary stress on the bell.
