Badd Medicine here and its reaction time
The movie "The Wood" is a coming-of-age story that takes place in Inglewood, California, in the 1980s. The story follows three teenage boys, Mike (Omar Epps), Roland (Taye Diggs) and Slim (Richard T. Jones) -- as they navigate their way through adolescence, dealing with peer pressure, relationships, and growing up in a tough neighborhood. The movie also shows the three friends in present-day, where Roland is getting married and has gone missing, leaving Mike and Slim to track him down.
Throughout the movie, the story switches between present-day and flashbacks to the 1980s, where the boys are seen getting into various misadventures. One of the flashbacks shows the boys on their way to a dance, where they get into trouble with a Blood gang member named Stacey. Despite this, Stacey becomes friends with Mike and even offers him advice on how to win over his crush, Alicia.
In the present day, Roland's wedding is in danger of being called off due to his disappearance, which leads to a heated argument between Mike, Slim, and Roland. Eventually, they find Roland at his ex-girlfriend's house, extremely drunk. After cleaning up, the boys make it to the wedding, and Mike has a fond exchange with Alicia, reminiscing on their past together. The movie ends with the boys declaring that they will always be the boys from "the Wood."

Enjoyed the reaction! There is a world of Black cinema that often gets overlooked by people outside of the community (similar for other minority groups as well). Sometimes people see a cast and assume they won’t be able to relate to the story and/or enjoy it because the cast doesn’t look like them or speak the same language. It causes us all to miss out on so many good movies. Off the top of my head in no particular order: -The Best Man (filled with a who’s who of black cinema, circa 90’s/00’s) -Love and Basketball (similar casts to the Wood and best man; plus the great Alfre Woodard) -Love Jones (y’all talk about Taye Diggs, nah. These were just off the dome lol. It’s funny looking at these movies again after some time. How I felt at like 15/16 seeing something like Love and Basketball or Soul Food could not be more opposite of how I feel now that I’m 30 lol Don’t even get me started on how messed up some of those characters were 🤦🏽‍♀️ (if you know, you know, 🤣)

I loved this reaction. You made a good point about The Wood setting the stage for Superbad and American Pie! There isnt a whole lot of young black coming of age films that dont have to deal with trauma and that's why a lot of us love this movie.

Im from Inglewood so this holds a special place in my ❤. I actually went to La Tijera Jr HS where they went so seeing that & other places i grew up around like the liquor store the brother robs brings back memories also the school dance & getting #'s with a pen & paper is so nostalgic. Oh also the guy that plays Slim as a teen is from Inglewood & we went to school together

A very interesting fact that most people dont know is the actress that played young Alicia is actually a year older than the woman that played adult Alicia. Young Alicia was 28 years old when this movie released in 1999.

This was great - the nostalgia! For the past 10 years or so, check out "Think Like a Man" (2012) - a crazy good ensemble cast and good for relationship fodder haha. Please also consider "Two Can Play That Game" (2001). A different vibe, but still a decent movie that not many react to is "Takers" (2010). The first two are comedic in nature, the last is more serious.

The Best Man and The Brithers are two that come to mind with great on screen chemistry with the cast and delivers a great story.

The girl that play Alicia (Melinda Williams) was older than quite a few members of the cast but looked the youngest! I used to copy her hair styles when I was younger!
