WHAT PEOPLE DON'T TELL YOU ABOUT VET SCHOOL

Hey guys! Clinical year of vet school has not been easy and it has made me reflect a lot. On this video I open up (and get sensitive) about certain topics that people don't talk about much in vet school. I talk about stress, mental health, family, euthanasia, good and bad cases, and some preasures I inevitably feel. I hope you guys like this video and understand where all my feelings come from; a heart that is totally in love with veterinary medicine.

I needed to hear this! I have wanted to be a vet for as long as I can remember (my mom said around 4 was when I told her I wanted to help animals) and that hasn't changed. This video probably came up to remind me that this is the path that I should be on even if it is difficult :)

I didn’t know that vets struggle a lot with mental health. I’m sure every profession comes with it’s own struggles though. I’ve been wanting to be a vet since I was very young. I hope with hard work and dedication one day I can achieve my goal☺️

I love your videos. Im currently a vet tech and want to apply to vet school in the near future but im nervous on how to handle the school load while working full time. I can relate on liking all animals and all aspects of veterinary medicine so its also a difficult decision for me to choose a specialty. I think either exotics or small animals for me, well see

This is so informative!! Thank you so much for sharing. I’m transferring this upcoming fall semester to begin taking classes for pre vet. I took a 5 year break from school and decided to go back two years ago to complete this dream that hasn’t ever gone away! I understand exactly what you mean when you feel so deeply, that’s my #1 concern in going into the field- I am so nervous that I’m gonna end up crying with patients lol! Have you or anyone you known had this experience?
@AdriTheVet
@AdriTheVet 4 года назад
carrieliizabeth hiii!!! I’m glad this video was useful for you. I used to be nervous of the same thing but shortly I have figured out that there is nothing wrong with crying with a patient/client. You’d be surprised how the client reacts positively. Obviously I wouldn’t cry and make a bigger scene than the owner, but I would definitely show empathy and support.

As a senior right now I can say I am going through a lot because I might not graduate on time or just simply not experiencing my senior year how I wanted. I’ve learned from this that in order to not have any mental breakdown I have to keep myself busy and just a way to distract myself. I feel like during this time Im preparing myself for what I’ll be going through later in life. I am going to Texas A&M fall of 2020 to study Animal science and eventually start vet school there. Which is why I love your videos because its opening my eyes on what I’ll be experiencing in the future. Thank you

I’ve always loved animals and thought about becoming a vet but I’ve heard stories of having to put healthy animals down at the owners request ...and I wouldn’t be able to live with doing that.
@AdriTheVet
@AdriTheVet 4 года назад
I personally have never met a vet that does that upon request without a valid reason. But at the end of the day if you become a vet you can be the vet you want to be so I wouldn't let that push you away from the profession. It is in our oath to do no harm.

Hey... I am thinking of studying veterinary in Germany (because I live there and that’s why my English isn’t the best) because I really love animals (especially horses). My aunt is working with animals so I know a little bit about that job but I never had my own pet. My parents didn’t allow to have either a dog or a mouse. But every week I am riding. My point is that I don’t know if it is a good idea to study veterinary because I never had really personal contact to animals (if this makes sense). But I love them and I wouldn’t know what job I also could do because i am not really interested in other things. I feel like I haven’t the chance to study this just because of never having a pet. Do you know other guys who have/had the similar „problem“ and what do/did they do and what do you think about it? It would be awesome if you could help me just a little bit 🥰
@AdriTheVet
@AdriTheVet 4 года назад
Marie L definitely!!! Everyone in vet school comes from different backgrounds, and having pets is not a requirement to get into vet school. A lot of people I know never had a pet before starting and that is ok. You can do it!

Hey Adri, I love your videos and all your advice about vet school and being a good vet. I hope to become a wildlife veterinarian someday and St George's really caught my attention. Does St George's have a good exotic animal programme that provides a strong foundation for dealing with/treating exotics? And does Texas A&M provide a good rotation for exotics???
@AdriTheVet

Hi Adri, could I ask for some advice on how you practice working up cases? I've finished my first clinical year yet feel overwhelmed with the information presented to me whenever we do case-based lessons, I don't know where to start. I want to be prepared when I get to rotations.
@AdriTheVet
@AdriTheVet 4 года назад
Saturn hi!! It’s easy to get overwhelmed with information but take it step by step. Start with history and physical exam and make a problem list. That way you don’t miss any abnormalities and you can find a source for each. That’s my approach to all cases! Hope this helps😊

I have a question regarding the resume for vet school. They want to see a minimum amount of time spent volunteering but how do you prove you actually did those hours? I volunteered for this shelter but since I went away for college they disabled my account and I can longer see the hours I volunteered for so how would I prove that I did those hours??
@AdriTheVet
@AdriTheVet 4 года назад
When I applied to vet school we were asked to put the number of hours or an estimation of it. I think as long as you're close you should be good to put it. Don't forget at the end you have references that can testify to that.
