Broadcaster/Journalist/Author Steve Burgess chats with Peter Cetera on Sept 30th, 1986.
In this interview Cetera talks about his proudest moments in Chicago, how he wasn't crazy about the band re-doing their classic early hit "25 of 6 to 4", he also defends his solo music sounding like Chicago and why there might have been a conspiracy to make sure his first album didn't sell.
Steve Burgess is an award-winning Vancouver writer and broadcaster. He is a former CBC Television host, documentary film director, and a veteran of both radio and TV. He's the author of “Who Killed Mom?” from Greystone Books, and his new book “Flight Risk: A Tourist on Trial” from Harbour Publishing will be out in the spring 2024.

I have always admired Mr Cetera. His bass playing with Chicago was very underrated, as was his song writing. If you listen to the interview with the original Chicago drummer Danny Seraphine (on another channel), Danny relates how good Peter's band was, and how talented Peter was and is.

I get it - he should get acknowledged - there were a lot of egos in the Chicago universe - There is a fine line between confidence and being mighty proud of yourself - Dude has a reason to expect notoriety - I was never a huge fan - but I respect it - I'm a Kath fan - He was head and shoulders above his bandmates

I believe that Terry Kath was a humbling influence on the other band members. He was the only one without a college music degree, and had that innate quality you can't learn; his guitar playing, and singing gave the band the kind of raw grit a rock band needs. When he tragically shot himself, once they'd dealt with their grief, and tried to move on and replace the unreplaceable, a guitarist that Jimi Hendrix once called the greatest, the other band members' egos emerged. Peter took an even more prominent role, and Chicago's music went from being powerful rock with a message to drippy Pop songs. It's still pleasant to hear. "Just You and Me" is a nice little love-ditty.

@@jhandle4196Even when Terry was in the band, they were getting more into the ballads. Terry even sang some. That was the 70s, ballads and soft rock were what was being played on the radio and were the hits. Nothing wrong with that. Chicago had some rock numbers, some that Peter even wrote and sang like Hideaway, and were great songs, but didn't become the hits. And also, Peter didn't go to music school either. I think he had a private tutor that taught him the basics then he developed on his own People talk about Terry and his guitar skills, but damn, Peter could play the bass and to me, he's one of the best. What a band Chicago was, they were all very good with their instruments.

Peter’s problem with the egos in Chicago sounds like what the drummer, Danny Seraphine, went through. I listened to an interview with Danny… outstanding drummer/musician, great guy, very down to earth, but the “core” of Chicago and their egos didn’t credit Danny with his writing and producing efforts in the group, like what Peter endured. Too bad for Chicago. I don’t think they ever maintained their quality of writing after Peter and Danny were basically forced to leave. RIP Terry Kath… will always enjoy the albums CTA through Chicago 12.

For years I thought Peter left Chicago for no good reasons and the whole thing was just the usual egos running the show. Recently I was listening to "If You Leave Me Now," "Stay The Night," and "You're The Inspiration" and it was clear that he had good reasons to go. It was almost the whole Lennon/McCartney thing all over again with different views and restlessness in a group setting. He's not just some egomaniac who wanted to make more money and kudos to him for appreciating some of the best songs on Chicago 18. They were the soundtrack to my earliest years along with Air Supply and the year I was born in 1976 "If You Leave Me Now" may have sent me on my way to music myself. My hope is Mr. Cetera and Jason Scheff's era of the band can separately make comebacks, but I guess people can't have hits with love songs for years now. Ponder that and the decline of popular music- what once was about brotherhood, sincerity, and love now gives way to revenge songs. A shame, but we still have those golden years of the 1960s through the 1980s. BTW love Terry Kath and Robert Lamm too!

Peter sounded older even back then. At first I thought this was recorded more recently. Glory of Love always seemed like it was meant for Chicago. I saw Chicago at Rupp Arena as a young lad, shortly after Peter left them. They were amazing overall, but when they all jumped at the same time, during the "jump in the air" transition from Hard To Say I'm Sorry, that was pure cringe. People were looking at each other when they did that 😄 BTW, the interviewer put his foot in it at 14:53. I agree it sounds like Chicago, but as Peter stated, a of of their sound (especially their last three albums) were mainly from Peter- as he points out.

I met Cetera once at a mastering studio where I worked. He came in to master his "World Falling Down" record. I complimented him on a couple of the songs that I really liked and said I liked how they featured cool melodic guitar riffs and how I wasn't expecting that. He got very weirdly defensive, just like he did in this interview with the DJ here, when he mentioned "The Glory of Love" sounding like a trademark Chicago ballad. He said to me "Have you listened to my other albums? I've been writing guitar pop songs all along," I was surprised because I was simply telling him that I liked that style, but he got defensive and a little bit weird about it. He hated people thinking that all he did was those big ballads. Okay, Pete, whatever!! LOL

Truthfully I never bought another Chicago album after Terry died. He was all that kept them from being a pop band. No disrespect to pop music. But I got into Chicago because they were a rock band. Still would see them live for old Terry era stuff. I recall before Peter left reports he felt he was face of Chicago( since he sang on videos) and wanted name change to Peter Cetera and Chicago. My friends and I all agreed beauty of Chicago was no one had ranking over anyone else and this sounded ridiculous. If Peter wanted to do solo album in his free time then fine. But sounds like they needed him to record new album and tour and he wanted them to wait until he did his album and tour. I would have insisted his first obligation was to Chicago recording and touring too. When he died Terry was going to do a solo album and tour. But Chicago was taking a year off from recording and performing. Terry didn't expect everyone to wait on him while he did his thing.

Balto.. same here. Terry was the heart soul and leader of the band. After his death they became a pop band. Cetera always thought his voice was king shit and always a complainer. He was under rated as a musician. He was a very good bass player and his voice is definitely very recognizable, but he is a narsasistic ass. He tried to take leadership of the band and the majority spoke. Not a fan. The way they stabbed Danny in the back also altered my life long obsession with Chicago. Very greatful being Canadian that we had our own version of Chicago called lighthouse, and in my opinion their 1968 double live album at Carnegie Hall is better then Chicago's. But that's my humble opinion. Ok enough venting. 👍🇨🇦🎸

I honestly can't believe that "Glory of Love" even made it to #1. Certainly sounds "canned" with the electronic piano, and the double-recorded vocal saturated with reverb. I'm an old horn player who was a fan of Chicago from the "Transit Authority" days, and played many of their songs, but when Terry Kath was killed, some of the heart and soul of the band died with him. Certainly Peter was a part of that with his bass work, and pulling off all the high vocal parts, but Pankow's power playing and horn arrangements is the element gave them their unique sound, but I always considered Robert Lamm the "leader." Well I don't begrudge Peter from moving on from the group, but compared to Chicago's vintage stuff when Terry was still alive, frankly it's kinda "Is this my floor" boring.

Lead singers with ego are not exactly new. Chicago was a democracy so one man standing out was not going to work. The timing of his departure was perfect as he wanted to do his own work and really he had been carrying Chicago for years anyway. He didn't ruin Chicago. The death of Kath and the drugs and mass success ruined them. The other writers Pankow,Lamb, etc were strung out and dry. His voice sold records. We were all so familiar with his tone, styling, and phrasing. Great lead singer. Chicago had an epic run but they were done as far as new material.

Too bad there is a lot of bickering and bad blood between all the members of Chicago. I thought back in the day that Terry didn’t want Peter in the band. Great music through the years.

Peter is very guarded and mostly indifferent about his time in Chicago. He rarely talks about great times in the studio or memorable concerts with the band, it’s a pity he’s like that because everything he recorded from CTA to 17 comes across sounding fantastic, like he was having a really good time and not just there for the pay check.

I totally disagree with he wasn’t recognized. Any real Chicago fan knew what he did. He was always considered an intricate part of the band. Sad it is what it is. Having seen ythem first in 1969 and followed ever since. Such a great band together and apart

Peter has always had a great voice, but what he did at the Rock and Roll Hall of fame to Chicago was inexcusable

Not really, he don't like most of those guys, why would he want to perform with them again?

There must have been some horrible bad blood that he just loathes his former musical brothers. Wants nothing to do with them and even refusing to stand with them in honor of their musical achievements at the RRHOF & the Song Writers induction ceremony. It's been said that he wanted to include his #1 hits he recorded with Chicago to put on his greatest hits album but Chicago denied him access to the master recordings so he re-recorded IYLMN, YTI & BWABS. So unfortunate but that's show-biz😢

Peter's contributions with Chicago are a huge part of why Chicago was successful. The best days of Chicago were from late 60s to late 70s. One of my all time favorite groups from that decade. But I have virtually zero interest in the soft ballad and love songs that Peter put out later on. It's mush.

After hearing what an arrogant a... Cetera is, it's likely some of the other band members might not have shed too many tears to be rid of that self-aggrandizing attitude.

Face it, Peter Cetera is a diva, agreed he gave Chicago their signature sound with his foundation in the band of 18 years. Yet as is recalled his solo efforts after were popular only to the early 90s. The dude is an opening act now like Heart or Cheap Trick. His schtick is now suited to small theatres or as a guest star for Michael Buble' or better yet reunite with Chicago.

Peter Cetera should've stopped trying to be Paul McCartney and should've just been Peter Cetera. Nobody can be Paul McCartney but Paul McCartney.

I stopped listening to Chicago after the crappy way they treated Danny Seraphine by firing him. They fired him despite a handshake agreement between all the band members when the band was first formed.

He was never my favourite singer in the band, anyway. When you got a guy like Robert Lamm who sings like Frank Sinatra and Terry Kath who sings like Ray Charles---Cetera's whiny falsetto is just annoying to me! He was just better off quietly playing bass
