He was being pressured to marry. This wasn't a love match, it was an arranged marriage with a woman of suitable birth and heritage. I doubt he had much say in the matter, as it was allegedly organised between Lady Fermoy (Diana's grandmother, lady in waiting to the Queen) and the establishment. Unhappiness all round, if you ask me. Diana chose to be trucculent about it instead of divorcing and moving on. She was not blameless in her behaviour - having affairs with numerous men, many of them married. A bad pairing and a rotten situation.

Diana didn't love her stable of men, she craved their attention (to the extent that she made a nuisance of herself and harrassed their wives - well documented) and it was done largely to make Charles realise what he was missing (and, sadly, he didn't care). Diana was young, but she was also immature as a result of the sheltered life she had. Like I said, a rotten situation that was handled badly. Neither of them came out of it well, and the impact of their mistakes and poor choices haunts their sons.

You make an excellent point! Unfortunately, Charles lost almost all of his credibility with the tapes and what was said at that time in the papers. I remember they tore him to ribbons and Camilla along with him. I couldn't care less what he did really, as the marriage to Diana was irretrievably broken down even at that reasonably early stage. However, there is an age group out there, including myself, who still remember all that gossip and garbage, and some people are still very angry at how Charles and Camilla treated Diana. I know Diana was no angel once the marriage broke down, but people see her as being used as a human incubator to have an heir and a spare and then watched as Prince Charles returned to Camilla's bed. So, in this situation the queen may choose the make William and Catherine the next king and queen, because, as you said, they are a young and very attractive couple who will make the monarchy fresh and interesting again.
