Agreed. There are lots of people on RU-vid who seem to know what they are doing, but do not.

Story telling is such a deep and complex part of filmmaking. Which one of these methods will help you most?

Sean - Always love when you give us homework! I have used some of these techniques, but more by accident and didn't realize what I was doing. This video clearly outlines how and why - great stuff to think about. While I am old for a "creator" (60+) and only been at this for 2 years I enjoy the process of learning and getting better. I never will win an award for film making but your videos have had a greater impact on my growth and how I approach each "story/video" I produce. Looking forward to continuing to learn from you and wish you a Happy and Healthy 2024.

Awesome video @seankitching , your videos are what inspired me to believe I could pick up a camera and learn to use it. After a few years now things are really starting to click and my own content is getting better for sure largely in part to your tutorials and demonstrations for b-roll! Would love to see more content like this in the future, especially things like your planning process and how you choose your shots for passion projects and travel related content!

Actually gonna go do a very short hike today and practice some cinematography tips. I like the idea of just kinda starting in the middle with all the good juicy stuff, and even dropping my Intro and opener. Will give this a try and see if that helps with my audience retention. Thanks Sean! Hike on and Rock on!

Thanks, Sean. Great tips. The loop technique is often used in British comedy and drama. If you watch some of the best British films, you'll see it everywhere.

@@seankitching Thank you Sean, I’m starting this year, my husband (whose name is Sean too btw :) is my camera man, we travel a lot, he is not pro he doesn’t do that for living but he is pretty good at it, he does invest in professional gear as well even though it’s just a hobby, however, he has zero time to do editing as he runs his company (that’s actually how he earns the living) so all these videos have been sitting on hardware drives, some few 4 terabyte storage, some 12 terabyte (yup, he even invested in professional storage for me) but meanwhile I’m paralyzed cause I actually don’t know where to start from, editing is overwhelming for me , and I realize the main dilemma for me has been that storytelling, I don’t know where to start, how to end, I wanted these travel videos to be more meaningful, informative, not just typical (here I am look at my hotel and this place and that’s it). I wanted it to be creative. The thing is footage is there, he shoots quite a lot, it’s just I don’t know how to put things together, storytelling, how to make that perfect intro (or perhaps I shouldn’t worry about it as you said) or what’s the best sequence and all of that. Anyway, this was perfect video to watch, I need to just stop procrastinating now and do it and even if it turns out not so good, what will help me is practicing I guess, my fear is that I want it to be perfect right from the get go but I think I have to get used to the idea that might not be the case and I will need to do few videos before I find my groove. Anyway, here is to “creative year” 🥂 I always watch your videos and I’ve learned so much!

I remember a short story still, that was set for us at school 50 years ago. Kathleen Mansfield, "The Garden Party." It was notable with unanswered questions and a dangling ending. If I remember your video tomorrow, it will be because you were too close to the camera, you invaded my personal space and you were swinging your hands at me. Framing I am comfortable, but use a narrower lens and put some distance between you and the camera. For me, I look and see what the Australian Broadcasting Corporation does in news, in current affairs, in documentaries. In drama, when we see a small part of characters, we're onlookers, very rarely is a protagonist addressing the viewer. The exception that comes to mind is Annika, and she's still at distance. And not so animated. OHh, loud music sucks. To see why, google "autism sensory overload."
