Also, I vividly remember NBA officials and national media saying that Seattle fans would become Portland Trailblazers fans... imagine being so utterly ignorant of Seattle Sports culture!!!
As a Thunder fan, it’s super sad what happened. I hope Seattle gets their team back in expansion. I’m glad we have a team here in Okc, but the league needs to have the Sonics back. The OKC-Seattle rivalry will feed so many families
@@Zwiizyy nope lol. We don’t have the banner or even a tag on the jerseys lol. The Larry O’Brien trophy that was won by that Sonics team isn’t even In OKC. If yall read up on the subject you’d actually see that the Thunder have a written deal with both the nba and Seattle to give the history back to the franchise when the Sonics get a team via expansion. Which is happening lol
Correction, the new owner of the Sonics never had any intention of keeping the team in Seattle. That is why we are bitter. Schultz is the main reason we lost our team, but the arena thing was never the real reason for losing our team. Hope Thunder ever have a title.
Born and raised in Seattle. The last time I went to a Supersonics game, I was thirteen years old. I am now currently thirty-one, and I desperately want them back.
@@ModernTwoThreeyeah I’ve been watching your vids for prolly 2-4 months now and I don’t know how you don’t have 100k by now the algorithm hates you lol
Shwan Kemp is my man! Best dunker in ame ever! It was a never forgotten highlight of my several us trips to visit seatle and see the nba trophy in the city museum! SonicPower forever! Greets from Dresden, Germany 🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀😁
I recommend everyone who wants to know more about the sonics and how they left the sonicsgate documentary. It's free on RU-vid and it's an amazing insight into the darker sides of the nba being a business at the end of the day and how that can affect the community
I met slick watts while I was working at Home Depot right out of high school, he tipped me $100 for carrying two bags of mulch for him and we talked basketball for a while. He’s a really cool guy
They deserve it. When the hornets were in Okc they made a ton of money and clearly the nba was working then. Now it’s not right what happened to the Sonics, but the city of Oklahoma City deserves a team. It’s worked really well up to this point
@@Zrich98okc deserves a team but they deserved an expansion team something brand new or even the hornets, not the Sonics. Durant Westbrook harden era should have taken place in Seattle.
As a former resident of Seattle (currently in Everett) and a loving fan of the Sonics, I offer my humble respect for your views about that '79 title. Kudos for your sense of Sportsmanship!
It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Clay Bennett was NEVER going to attempt to save the team from relocation once he purchased them he was from Oklahoma City went to college at Oklahoma and made it publicly known that he wanted to bring an NBA team to Oklahoma City
While the greater Seattle Tacoma area is well over 1 million, the city of Seattle NEVER had a population of over 1 million. I'm not sure where you got that nugget of misinformation from.
Seattle has not ever had more than 1 million within city bounds, according to Wikipedia the metro currently has about 4 million. City bounds are different from metro areas. Huge fan of your channel just erked the nerd in me lol
adam silver is just gonna keep making excuses to not add another expansion team into he steps down. nba is making too much money and he's def getting a kickback. NO reason otherwise that they don't have them back already
As a Seattle sports guy, the Sonics leaving was absolutely heartbreaking, it came out of nowhere and blindsided the city... it also seemed like the city and the league even tried to help them leave... it was a ridiculous tragedy... and the city crushed the Hansen arena that would have belped bring them back earlier... our city and state government are awful...
Haven’t watched a full game since they left. Very so often I watch a minute or two but it’s mostly highlights that pop on my feed. Plus, I won’t purchase anything NBA related until SuperSonics come back.
I had a life-size poster of Jack Sikma on my bedroom wall as a kid. I can still name the players of the 79 champ team, and they only got better from there. Their questionable departure was the start of the NBA downturn overall and no matter what happens in the future the league is too pitiful and pathetic today to be able to replace the sonics with anything remotely close. The glory days are LONG GONE
One thing to remember is that Hurricane Katrina played a huge part in OKC getting the team. When the New Orleans Hornets (the name at the time) couldn't play home because of hurricane damage, they temporarily moved to OKC where they were a huge hit. The NBA saw the enthusiasm in the town and really wanted a team in there. It was something that Howard, at the time, should have realized that when he sold to a business group from OKC. Perhaps he didn't care. The new owners said they were looking for a publicly financed arena in the Seattle area, but no one took that seriously at the time. That was later confirmed with a series of leaked emails.
Ngl i still hate OKCT ngl it has nothing to do with the players fans the city or state its just that i really despise how american sports work where a man can just buy a team and move it to his back garden and face no reprocussion, and more so seattle get told by the literal commisioner that its all Seattles fault cause they didnt wanna pay half a billion, the championship question i mean that should just be shared since the city of Seattle owns the rights to the Seattle Supersonics
I remember watching the 96 finals live on tv. I was like 11ish. I loved the Sonics. I had never been to Washington, let alone Seattle. I did not care, Sonics was my team. I still have binders full of Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton cards, but when I heard the news of the team I loved for so long moving away, I was heartbroken. Then, I read that the team will retain the history of the Sonics. Now, I understand why people from Washington hate on the Thunder. It's fair, to say the least, but people outside of that area who were also fans didn't have any alliance to Seattle. In many ways, Seattle let ME down, not the other way around. I don't actually care if that's true. It's how I felt then, and it's how I feel now. With the history still attached to the club, I CONTINUED to be a fan of my favorite team, THE OKC THUNDER! I CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT SEASON!
When the Sonics talked about moving, we were in the middle of the great recession, to top that off, the NBA was in a downswing as Michael Jordan had just left and a referee became involved in a cheating scandal. In addition, Seattle had just just invested a lot of political capital in building stadiums for the Mariners and Seahawks, residents wanted more investment in education and fire and police services. The proverbial perfect storm.
The biggest reason the Sonics moved was because they went against the NBAs wishes, after the Kingdome was demolished for its structural issue's the city saw the price of a new stadium and made a law against new stadiums being built in city limits with public funds only renovations. The plans for renovating the stadium were created but expensive and Howard Schultz didn't want to spend the money for part of the renovation, so he put the team on the market. Many believe that David Stern was angry at Seattle for create the law so he made sure Clay Bennett bought the team before someone who would pay a fair share for the renovation would buy the team.
I'm not even from Seattle and I just started tolerating OKC a year ago. I remember this happening and it pissed me off. But I think if the Sonics come back we will all let it go. Same thing has happened a bunch of times already.
I was a huge basketball fan my entire life growing up in Seattle with Payton and Kemp. Still living in Seattle. Our entire city quit watching the NBA once they took our Sonics from us. Even if they came back, I don't think too many people would tune back in. The NBA lost an entire city of fans that year that will probably never comeback. The only people around here that watch basketball anymore are the hardcore and transplants from other parts of the country. This era of basketball sucks anyway.
I was a die-hard Sonics fan living on East Coast. I was so upset when they moved to OKC. I felt bad for my Sonics brothers in Seattle & now they're no longer even called the Supersonics/Sonics. But after a year of being disheartened, my Fandom continued to grow as a Thunder fan. I want to see Seattle get another franchise put under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should they be called the Sonics! Come up w/ a new name. Your spitting in Gary Payton, Kemp & Nick Collison face by pretending the old Sonics history never happened
They should just delete the clippers franchise and bring back the Sonic’s, at least the thunder have made a finals clippers have done nothing in their entire existence
As a fan that lives in Seattle that’s a fan of the bucks I am very very mad that they eft so I have to travel to a different place to watch basketball it would be great for them to come back so 8 can watch h my favorite team play
Bro nice vid! Wanted to ask, you said that the supersonics lost the finals in seven, but a couple seconds before you said it was first to win three games? How is that possible?
Bring back the sonics, comets, whalers ,shock, expos and the st louis rams and keep the As in Oakland the only relocation made since was the nets to Brooklyn and the thrashers to winnepeg
If our mayor in Seattle doesn’t cave like a b*tch to the nba and holds them to their lease in key arena through 2010, with the economy collapsing in 2008, Bennett almost certainly has to sell the team and the Sonics most likely get taken over by someone committed to keeping them in Seattle and the Sonics never go anywhere. The necessary facility upgrades would’ve come in due time just not as fast as some greedy billionaires would have wanted.
When Bennett, with the help of local politicians, stole our team; had to write off the NBA... Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, Westbrook... We had it going. With all sports going to separate digital subscriptions for each sport, doubt the same hype will be there.
Well the next city thats getting a team is in Canada I’m not sure witch one but I feel f you have a expansion team for the east or west you gotta have one for the other also
...where'd you hear or see that? Because Silver and the NBA have been VERY clear that Seattle and Vegas were the top targets for expansion and have been since the Sonics moved.
