Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re going to be discussing HOGWARTS and its 4 founders. Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff.
Specifically, we’ll be taking a closer look at the legacy they left behind- seeing if their contributions to the Wizarding World are perhaps even greater than previously imagined. We’re also going to be taking a closer look at what actually HAPPENED to them.
We know that they planned for the future (and their absence) by creating The Sorting Hat. This allowed them to continue to sort students in to their respective houses long after they were gone from the school.
But my theory today asserts that they left something…ELSE behind.

This theory is full of holes. To enact this charm, you have to be willing to be murdered by someone to protect someone else, and then the person you sacrificed yourself for is protected from the person you sacrificed yourself to. Harry is not protected from any threat he might face, in fact, anyone BUT Voldemort can kill him easily. His mother protected him from Voldemort, and only Voldemort. After Harry sacrifices himself to Voldemort for the rest of the school, they're protected from Voldemort and only Voldemort. His Death Eaters have no problems in killing and hurting people. There is nothing in any of the material that would allow someone to commit suicide and somehow protect everyone in the school from a vague and unknown potential attack at some point in the next 1000 years. There may be another kind of magic that does this, but this magic does not.

Between the triwizard tournaments of past & quidditch as an institutional sport - we know from throwaway lines that more than one person has died at Hogwarts in 1,000 years even if we don’t directly know their names. It is worth noting as well that Cedric didn’t die at Hogwarts. (He also wasn’t murdered by Voldemort, even thought Dumbledore tells the school he was. He was killed by Peter Pettigrew. I’m always surprised at how often even people who are deep into Potter lore forget that one).

My opinion Is That in this era Safest era since the creation of the school And the fact that the tournaments are known to be deadly And putting your name into the goblet of fire can lead to death I assume every time they did this tournament Some student got hurt Or died Now how many times did they do this event Then make a plus minus Im sure that for every 1 tournament nobody died There is one where someone died

Well thought through theory. There are, however, two aspects I'd challenge: 1.) There is the account of Helena Ravenclaw about her mother's death - which also includes the Baron. Why wouldn't they know about her sacrifice? So, at least heartbroken Ravenheart would maybe also be needed to be counted out just like Slytherin. 2.) No matter how you answer 1.), there is the fact that the Founders would have been people of their time. And - if anything at all - the number "1000" at that time would have symbolically (and esp. no longer literally) have meant "eternity"/ "until the end of times". My point is: the symbolism and understanding of numbers was very different back then. To think in such concept of: "in 100 years", "in thousand years", etc.) is very modern (-> clockworks; Newton).

Ohh man this is such a great theory! Although it's known from the Canon that Rowena Ravenclaw fell ill and died - she also held off her death for as long as possible in the hope of reuniting with her daughter so I don't think she made the sacrifice. However, extending on your theory: After Ravenclaw's death, Hufflepuff and Gryffindor became worried how they would keep up their protections around the school, now that they were reduced by half and they were getting on in age/declining health and they then decided to cast the loving sacrifice over the castle. Maybe not the building itself but certainly anyone who could ever count themselves among its population, in perpetuity

"I stole the diadem. I sought to make myself cleverer, more important than my mother. I ran away with it. My mother, they say, never admitted that the diadem was gone, but pretended that she had it still. She concealed her loss, my dreadful betrayal, even from the other founders of Hogwarts. Then my mother fell ill - fatally ill. In spite of my perfidy, she was desperate to see me one more time. She sent a man who had long loved me, though I spurned his advances, to find me. She knew that he would not rest until he had done so."- Helena Ravenclaw Rowena fell ill, fatally, but tried to survive long enough for the Baron to find Helena. No, she didn't sacrifice herself. As far as Salazar Slytherin, it has always been my thought that he built the chamber, and hid a basilisk, to be used against attacking muggles by his descendants if need be. He foresaw what could come, as the Inquisition was formed in 1184. The basilisk was never used by the Gaunts, even as crazy as they became, until Tom came to Hogwarts. He wasn't a true Gaunt, and as nuts as the Gaunts became, I doubt that they would have ever released a basilisk upon the school as Tom did. They had all the opportunities in the world to do so over one thousand years.
@kendraroth1276
@kendraroth1276 Месяц назад
Well it’s possible that not all of Slytherin’s descendants knew about the chamber. But the ones who did, definitely rarely, used it. Otherwise it would have been mentioned as being opened every 40 or so years. So they probably considered that the basilisk should only be used in case of an emergency. Though I do doubt that none of the descendants before Voldemort used it. Someone must’ve updated the entrance to the chamber. (Hogwarts was made before plumbing and it was reckless allow a Girls restroom to be where the chamber’s entrance is.)
@craxd1
@craxd1 Месяц назад
@@kendraroth1276 I believe it was Corvinus Gaunt that had the second floor bathroom built. He probably paid for a wing to house it and what was below it (three floors in all). That may have been where much of their family's wealth was squandered. The entrance was supposedly an old trapdoor and tunnels, which they built over. It happened in the 1700s, when it was discussed that plumbing would be installed. The first patent for the flushing toilet was issued to Alexander Cummings in 1775, so it would have started around that time, even though one had been invented during the 1500s for the Queen. Yes, early castle toilets were built projecting off the walls, and worked like outhouses. The waste dropped to the ground or moat below. Chamber pots were also around long before plumbing and the first Crapper flush toilet.

James and Lily died in their home. If the spell can be transferred to a building, how was dumbledore sure that the spell wasn't on Godric's Hollow after their deaths? Why couldn't Harry live there instead of with Petunia?
@Dragondan1987
@Dragondan1987 Месяц назад
Maybe buildings require more preparation and planning, so dumbledore couldn’t just pull the blood protection out of the blood line and insert it into the building. Like the founders built the school, there is a good chance a protection spell like that might have needed them to put runes or charms or their blood on the very foundations of the building to hold the spell. Them willingly sacrificing themselves might allow for more power as well, since they could focus their power and give it willingly, while Harry’s parents accidentally doing it because they were murdered.

I always perceived that the “love protection” spell that happens through sacrifice was a very niche and understudied area of magic. Quite like horcruxes. It was very much a spectrum in how it behaved. I believe this is evidenced by Dumbledore needing the Dursley’s, I’m sure if dumbledore could have had literally anyone else care for Harry he would have. But Dumbledore only KNEW for certain he’d be protected around a relatives blood. Kind of like how Voldemort never knew for certain he could split his soul into 7 pieces until he’d done it. Unfamiliar and untested areas of magic.

I think quite simply that as fig pointed out the castle is a bastion of ancient magic. A form of magic the 4 founder had acess to and which made them immensely powerful. It is this ancient reservoir of magic used to create and maintain the castle that has been added to by all founders that grant a seemingly atypical level of safety.

I have a hard time with this theory. Rowena Ravenclaw is pretty much the only founder with a story pertaining to her death and no sacrifice was mentioned. One would think something that important would have been included in the story. However, that doesn't mean any of the other founders couldn't have sacrificed themselves. Although, again, something that important would probably have been included in tales about them...just like it would've been included in Harry Potter's tale. Blood magic was common in many older cultures as 'blood holds the life', when blood leaves a human or animal it dies. So, if anything, they probably used ancient blood magic to protect Hogwarts. What I want to know is where the pensieve came from and why it was just sitting there on the future location of Hogwarts.

You forget that it is mentioned in the books that Rowena Ravenclaw indeed died but due to illness as she sent the bloody Baron out to find her daughter so she could see her one last time and make peace with her, before she would perish. So she didnt die out due to a sacrifice ritual or anything like that, so as interesting as your theory is, it cannot be true unless you wanna think that only Helga and Godric made the sacrifice alone.

This theory doesn't really change anything about Harry Potter in any significant way. It's already known that the sorting hat considers their history/lineage, who they are, what they value, and the potential of who they can become, so nearly all students were sorted correctly. That is because each house represents specific qualities, but people are not limited to those qualities. They are dynamic in their persona. Therefore, the sorting hat sums up all of this information about the student and makes its decision comprehensively

Makes sense. Remember the wizarding world gradually lost it's "blood purity" over the years. This means that, over 1000 years, the blood of the 3 Founders who participated in the sacrifice was probably thin enough to break, or at least drastically weaken, the protection to the school. Also, the 3 threats I believe finished off weakening this charm were insider Hogwarts threats from students. The first was Tom Riddle in his time at Hogwarts while researching Horcruxes. This led Voldemort to eventually damaging Rowena's diadem, which may have impacted the spell. Riddle, having been one of the students protected by the charm, could also inadvertently damaged the charm in the same way a spy can damage a military unit more than any outside force could. The 2nd was Ginny Weasley while possessed by Tom's Diary. Again an inside student plus Slytherin influence. The 3rd and final one is Draco Malfoy when he used the cabinets to help the Death Eaters bypass the school's defenses. These 3 events, combined with the passage of time, could have all played a role in defeating the charm protecting Hogwarts. And all 3 of these events tie back to Slytherin House, and therefore Slytherin himself.

If the founders sacrificed themselves in order to protect Hogwarts, it was not a selfless act, therefore I don't think it worked. Moreover, the death os James didn't protect Lily as he had no choice. Lily had a choice (because of Snape) but she chose death. Harry also had the choice not to be murdered but he chose death. Maybe the founders sacrifice wasn't about casting the protection charm but they used soke kind of blood magic (which also appears as a very powerful type of magic).

I have one problem with your theory. In the books the grey lady told Harry that the baron was send after her to bring her home because her mother was dying. If this is true and I think it is because why would she lie. Then Ravenclaw was allready dying so. So if you sacrify yourself while you allready are dying then would it really be a sacrifice? Could it be your theory is correct yet it wasnt three of the founder but two since one was allready dying or even perhaps dead befor the sacrifice?

My thought is maybe Slytherin had a hand in their deaths. He became so angry at them going against him at every turn- allowing muggle borns, not going after those who persecuted them, etc. And he gained a following, went on the attack for a final confrontation with the other founders to try and take Hogwarts for himself. But the founders weren't having any of his shenanigans anymore, and wound up making the ultimate sacrifice. Forever putting shame on Salazar's name. But the conflict was so violent, so deadly that their students/family who remained chose not to put it in the records. They wanted to focus on the good that the founders did, not how it ended for them. It seems like the kind of thing Salazar would try in the end, and have it not work out for him in any form also.

Fascinating subject. I wouldn't be surprised to find out one day that most, if not all of your theories are proven to be Canon. Here's another theory. Perhaps the reason that Slytherin House still carries the dark reputation that it does to this day is due to the actions of Salazar Slytherin when the Sorting Hat was created by each of the four Founders. Each of them made provisions to ensure that their legacy, influence, and presence within Hogwarts, continued to exist within the school they had founded even after they had died. Salazar, of course, chose to manifest one of these provisions by means of the Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets but what if he, after breaking bonds with the other Founders, chose to curse the very house he represented out of sense of spite and betrayal, the same way Tom Riddle cursed the DADA position after Dumbledore denied him the job. In doing so, for generations to come, whatever students the Sorting Hat placed in Slytherin were subject to this curse and its influence during their time at Hogwarts, as a result further contributing to the ill-reputed House of the Serpent as well as reflecting the character and intentions of its founding father Salazar Slytherin.

There may be a very simple reason the deaths of the Founders of Hogwarts are lost in obscurity and lacked significance in the history of the magical world... They didn't die. Of course, in what manner they survive, it's hard to say. It could be a case of "break glass if all are in mortal peril" abiding tomb for the 3. Suicide would not invoke a protective spell, no matter how "noble" the act. So, I much prefer my theory. 😊 Keep up the good work. I don't have to agree to appreciate your enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of the story. 😊

I wish there was a dedicated Founders Harry Potter film but only if JK Rowling oversaw it. It would be sweet to see a fanfilm by dedicated fans but so many answers could be revealed And to see the houses drift apart so close to the founding is interesting too

How are you ariving at the fact that Hogwarts was founded in 990 AD? That was just when Gryffindor got the hat they use for sorting?

It probably was before the Arthurian era since it was confirmed that Merlin was a student at hogwarts

My theory is that Salazar and Godrick got fed up with the two pushy witches and sailed far, far away starting a new life together. How many muggles in their later life realizes that the opposite sex is tiresome, so wizards with longer lifespan have even grater chance of this realization. What makes me say that they were gay/bi? Like Dumbledore, they were geniuses, sexually aware people are usually from the smarter kind, no offense there alpha chads (wink, wink)

Do you really have to restate your premise at the beginning of videos multiple times? 8 times you stated "Hogwarts's founders were powerful and saw threats they would have protected them from" in different paraphrasing. Say it once and get in with it!

Or their deaths were just never come up with by the author and that's why they're not known 🤷🏼‍♀️

Why would dark wizards even want to attack schools ??? Voldemort attacked Hogwarts as a way to get at Harry. How many dark wizards before then attacked Hogwarts or any of the other wizarding schools around the world ????

Wow Dumbledore was a terrible man. I mean if a half-trained slacker like Harry could cast a spell that protected hundreds of people, just imagine what Dumbledore could have done. But I guess he just didn't care. What a cold hearted basta*d he was. Or maybe book 7 was just a half arsed, rushed ending full of PIS and plot holes.

If it doesn't meet Albus'idea of the "Greater Good" then no sacrificial protection would be given by him.

Do yall think JK Rowling was thinking this deep? Or is she just the queen of coincidences? Her world building wasn't as massive as GRRM or Tolkiens. Yet incredible connections are made all the time

I never understood, if you need to ENTER the wizarding world through special gates (platform 9 3/4 i.e.) , why would they need to actually HIDE anything from sight? It literally is a different world, otherwise everything would be on top of one another, in a masquerade of epic proportions. This is one of the problems with the entire series, sometimes it is hinted that they have all these special world things and then in others they are a hidden group inside the society. I just hate the overall crazy of that. In the end, wizards could have had exterminated muggles easily at any given point in time, specially with Salazar seeing them as mere animals.
