I love how this channel challenges the group think we all participate in. I myself have used the term ‘butterfly tax’ before without really thinking. All quality knives are going to cost, and I think you make some well reasoned points showing maybe benchmade takes more shit than the others without deserving it.

I myself woud use the term "spyder tax" the Delica has stainless liners, vg-10 and frn. How do those materials make it a 100€ (100$) knife, makes no sense to me, and dont even mention all their cheapest compresion lock is on a 160€ Pm3.

You missed something. The purchase price of a Benchmade also covers the expense of their superior warranty service. I sent 5 Benchmade knives in for their Life Sharp service. At the cost of shipping them the package, they cleaned, repaired, sharpened and tuned up the action as needed. I am not even the original owner, I bought these knives used and I still qualified.

I do like Benchmade, however I have had a substantial amount of QC issues with knives I've bought from them, and very few with Spyderco. Just my personal experience but whenever I go to a knife show and handle a bunch of Benchmade knives it is literally a challenge to fine ones without vertical or horizontal blade play.

I've had the same experience. At one point I was trying to buy an Anthem - I ordered like 3-4 online and had to return every single one of them. Benchmade has poor QC, but their CS is awesome. Spyderco on the other hand has horrible CS but better QC. I haven't had good luck with their CS. They still owe me $$ after they reused to fix or exchanged the last knife I sent in.

You have some good points, especially re:the actual production cost of the various knives. I'd have to argue with your assumption that the Axis lock is stronger than a back lock. I can tell you that the Axis lock is useless with a broken spring and it happens. Meanwhile I've never seen a broken back lock. Further, Benchmade is notorious for bad centering and lockup out of the box. Spyderco, on the other hand, has a great out of box experience. I suspect Spyderco has come to the conclusion that better QC from the factory and a lower price results in a stricter service policy while Benchmade has lower QC standards but is willing to spend more on expensive after sales service, explaining a lot of the price delta. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

@hammerhi

Good points! I would like to push back on your opinion that back locks are simple to make. Yes, the mechanism is simple, but that simplicity is deceptive. The lock bar locks the blade, stops the blade, provides the detent force, AND needs to be flush with the handle open and closed. If the geometry, tolerances, and heat treatment aren't dialed in perfectly, you get blade play, lock stick, proud lockbars, lock failure, etc. Sal Glesser has said several times on the Spyderco forums that he finds the back lock the most challenging to execute well. Much easier to use a liner or frame lock where the ramped lock face can tolerate a fair amount of manufacturing slop before exhibiting blade play.

Great video! Love the way you keep it objective, and let the viewer make their own conclusion. There was more value I feel like you could have added to the Griptilian vs the Delica, and that would be that the Griptilian is made in the United States, which I should add value for a lot of people. I have had more issues with Benchmade’s than Spyderco’s in my experience, but that’s counterbalanced by the superior warranty of Benchmade. I really couldn’t choose between the two for value, but I do definitely find myself buying more Spyderco’s than Benchmade’s, and in my experience, Spyderco’s QC is much better.

cameron williams I have that contego and it's a great knife. My only issue is the extreme jumping all over it. For any task lasting longer than a few minutes, I need to wear a glove. The jimping is just too sharp. I did have to send the knife in for warranty service. I had one scale screw come loose and it wouldn't screw back in. Benchmade fixed it but then went ahead and red loctited every single screw and the pivot. When I had to send in a brand new 940-2 for a sticky axis lock i made sure to write on the form that if anything needed loctite, use blue and not red. My experience with spyderco qc is better.

I think I have stated in video that the Benchmade 940 is "overpriced". I personally wasn`t talking about material cost or anything, it was meant in a price/performance way. A Benchmade 940 is around 240€ here in germany (approx 250$) while a PM2 or a Manix 2 are 160-180€. If you compare those it is my opinion that the Benchmade 940 comes up short in the price/performance aspect because it`s more expensive while having the same bladesteel, arguably a weaker locking mechanism, and arguably a less comfortable grip. For the same price of the 940 you can get a Spydiechef, a Mantra, or a PM2 in S110V or Maxemet. I also had QC problems with my 940 out of the box, with one of the Omega Springs breaking within a week of having the knife, while my Spyderco`s where flawless out of the box. Benchmade did send me the replacement (which took 6 weeks to arrive), but that problem shouldn`t have happened in the first place. It`s just me with my experience and my opinion, but I think at least in the case of the basic 940 the price doesn`t reflect well on what you get. I am still interested in the Bugout and the full spec Griptilian though. But Cold Steel sweeps the floor with both brands, Recon 1 in S35VN for 130€, and that knife will not fail on you.

There was a paramilitary probably around 10+ years ago. That was the original. Now there is a paramilitary 2 (current generation) they recently came out with the para 3 (Not paramilitary 3) the para 3 isn't the 3rd gen of a paramilitary because it's so much smaller then the original and the para 2. The para 3 is on it's own. It doesn't make sense as to why they named it the para 3 since there where no previous generations of it, and it's not a continuation of the paramilitary line.

Hi. Thanks for the review. I too love both Spyderco and Benchmade, maybe with a slight preference for Benchmade because of the fidget-friendly axis-lock (prefer it even over the compression- and ballbearing-lock) and because to me they generally just look better. Also I like take the side of the underdog and I get amused when Nick Shabazz or especially some wannabe gunslinger get's all prejudiced about Benchmade😜 I do actually prefer a spydiehole (especially on a 555, I'd surely go Loco if my budget allowed me to do so), because playing with thumbstuds tenderizes my thumb and/or wears my nails down🤫 And in my limited experience Spyderco's are just a bit 'slicier' on account of their (mostly) tall(er) primary grinds. But then there's also the tradeoff of having a wide knife in the pocket. But that's mostly just legitimizing my personal tendency to like Benchmade just a little bit more. I do however have a question that I hope you, or some other viewer might could maybe clarify: What exactly makes the axis-lock stronger/more secure than a backlock? Is it just because it's less likely that 2 thin springs would be less likely to fail than 1 thicker spring, or is it something else entirely?

OK, you made a good bunch of comparisons/examples, and I believe that you have proven your point. I'm starting to believe that some of the knife reviewers are harbouring personal gripes against Benchmade, and using their platform to paint Benchmade as the "bad guy". I have many knives by Spyderco & Benchmade ( all the way back to the original Worker by Spyderco, and the then Pacific Knife Co.) and I love most of them. Both have some QC issues. Now I'll have to really think about my next knife, maybe I can alternate, with an occasional Boker/Case thrown in.

Good video! In regards of the cost, its not just about how complicated it is to make, it is also about how many you make. I am pretty confident to say, that a Spyderco toprunner knife (PM2, Military, Delica) is much cheaper than the toprunners from Benchmade. But Spyderco also has a much bigger lineup, with knives that they do not produce as many of them, therefore also don´t sell as many (think about Spyderco fixed blades, or very complicated designs). So in total they have more knives that are more expensive to make than Benchmade. Here in Europe there is a 60 Euro price difference between a Spyderco PM2 and a BM 940, which is quite a lot for the difference you get, but it also tells you that Benchmade does not produce enough knives to supply the European market.... . From my personal experience an Axis lock is not reliable at all, also needs much more cleaning and beeing taken care of more frequently (Just my personal experience!) Had a 940 fail on me twice, will never buy one again, some people had one for decades and love it, maybe mine was made by Dave on Tuesday before lunch dunno.

I loved both brands as I came into the knife world. I still Love benchmade designs. But I currently own 0. I owned 8 benchmades. The only one that didn't have qc issues was the HK axis folder. I've had multiple knives with unfixable side to side play. I could crank the pivot until the blade wouldn't open and close.....but still had side to side. If benchmade could fix QC issues I'd become a fan again. Materials and designs are good. QC and blade grinds are normally awful(on knives I've bought). My sharpened bevels are bad but since I sharpen no biggie. The actual blade grinds are uneven. My spydercos I've owned about 30. And never a QC issue. Some design aspects I didn't like but so far that's it. I put the axis lock above frame, liner, or compression in strength. But back lock and spyderco bearing lock(manix lock) I'm pretty sure have been proven stronger in tests.......thanks for the videos and opinions. Keep it up.

Production cost is not a factor in determining whether something is overpriced. Production quality and features compared to purchase cost are the factors. Whether a company is efficient or inefficient in their production pipeline is irrelevant. They could pass that cost savings on to the customer... OR pass the extra earnings on to shareholders. So how much it costs a company to make a product doesn't factor into this at all.

Over the past 8 years or so, I've owned about 40 Spydercos and 20 BM's.. You must be lucky to not have problems with your'e BM's.. It seems like most everyone else (myself included) has had QC problems..The axis lock costs more cause it's more complicated.. Everything on that lock etc has to have perfect tolerances for it not to have any problems (blade play, weak detent etc).. More parts more problems.. IMO- most knife manufacturers put out a crappy product for the money.. I'm into aquarium fish and bass fishing.. It would be very, very rare for me to get a $100-$200 filter or reel and have any problem...I've had a lot of problems lately with those 2 brands and others.. But, it's saving me money..I'm real picky with any knife purchases and expect near perfection for $200 or even $100...

The cost of making the knife shouldn’t matter in the value debate because if another knife has the same or better quality at a cheaper price than knife A then knife A is overpriced compared to that knife. If someone else can make a equal knife at a cheaper cost it’s the competition’s duty to catch up in manufacturing
@gambitgaming4573
@gambitgaming4573 6 лет назад
you should do zt vs we. or crkt vs. kershaw. i think the reason people say benchmades are overpriced is because they are known to have qc issues. and a few of there knives are definitely overpriced. like most of the balisongs they make right now (except the 87) or like the micro pocket rocket they just came out with. $340. that's a crazy price for such a small knife. you could almost get a small custom folder for that price. and I don't know how they can justify that price when they are doing it as a frame lock. and I've never heard food things about there framelocks
@gambitgaming4573
@gambitgaming4573 6 лет назад
also things cost what people are willing to pay. if 1000 out of 3000 people are willing to pay $700 for a knife rather than $200 for the same knife. well you'll make more money from the 1000 people charging them $700 rather than selling 3000 people the same knife for $200. and you don't have to sell as many. I sometimes question where benchmade gets there prices from. even more so with the balis they make. the 51 costs as much or more than a replicant. and the 6x knives are almost the price of an alpha beast. that's insane. and there's an entire company based on making there knives flip better

Well done. I've been advocating for Bechmade for a while. I love Spyderco as well, so this isn't a Benchmade vs. Spydero thing for me. Better better lock (for me), U.S. made. and better support. This makes the Griptillian seem like a bargain. People tend to discount the value of free lifetime fixes, screws, clips, and sharpening. Most reviewers seem to have issues with Benchmade quality, which is a fair criticism.

Great video again- challenging misconceptions or at least explaining why a particular lock/steel/grind may cost a different price to manufacture is really important, as a lot of videos can kinda churn out the same stats etc without really looking into justifying what they are saying. Out of interest, what makes you say that the axis lock is stronger than the back lock and probably the compression lock too? I'm not saying that you're wrong- just genuinely interested in your reasoning for this..keep em coming Vinnie;)

@neroknives1828
@neroknives1828 4 года назад
The back lock relays on a thinner L shape bar to hold the blade open. The back lock is a very strong lock and more then anyone would need. But the axis lock uses a bar that is in more contact with the tang of the blade. It is also a cylinder shape which is a stronger shape. Lastly the back lock relays on a pin that is generally found mid way down the handle of a knife. Beacuse of this there is added forces that get applied to it when compared to a standard stop pin. So given the shape, added contact and the fact Position of the bar on the axis lock. The axis is the stronger lock. Again back locks are very strong. But be designe are weaker then the axis. And for the compression lock. The compression locks are similar to liner locks in their ability to slip out the side with a strike to the back of the blade. Deeper lock up would help with this. If the compression lock doesn't slip, and stays in place it's a super strong lock. Again any of these would be more then enough for anyone. Hope this helps. Sorry for the late reply Nero

neroknives I don't quite agree with what you just said. Knives made in Asia or the US are both made on the same CNC machines and take the same time to make. Had both the Military and Contego. For the money the Contego is definitely worth it. Very different knives though. The Military is a very lightweight cutting tool whereas the Contego is a fully steel framed beast with a better steel a more robust blade that is built for serious hard use. The Military with its tapered blade is more of a pure cutting tool, dlicey dicey, no prying. Much prefer M4 tool steel, the stuff sharpens like a laser and can take a beating. For self defense? Both get that job done.

I really like my Yojimbo. Yeah it's designed for SD but I think wharncliffe blades are way under rated. I really don't get why they are not as popular. When I use a knife, I typically want the tip to bite in the draw the cut for the vast proportion of whatever I cut edc chip bags to cardboard and the wharncliffe is superior. It's this fact that was the reason why the blade shape was chosen for SD. We cut in arches and a blade that curves will not bite into anything as aggressive. My Yojimbo combined with the hollow grind is insane at cutting through material, like half the effort. Ergonomics are also superior to my 9ther knives. This knife was a huge surprise to me just how impressive it is to traditional designs.

Pricing is more than simply cost of production. These brands also have product placement factored in. They seek to be more of a Rolex and less of a Timex. The brand placement and recognition is key, as is the perception of quality. Both of these brands are widely imitated, so the value of looking like theses established brands matters to many. Still, the Minimum Advertised Pricing (MAP) policy of Spyderco and Benchmade shows that product placement is a core strategy.

@jonduncansakurawallknifegarden
Just for reference, after benchmade’s patent expired for the axis lock, ganzos are using them and people are sayin that they’re axis lock is comparable and they’re offered for $25- the axis must be cheap to produce in my opinion.
@neroknives1828
@neroknives1828 5 лет назад
Jon Duncan people also say a liner lock on a $10 knife compares to that of one found on a $500 knife. Doesn’t mean it’s true.
@jonduncansakurawallknifegarden
I’m just referencing to the price point topic about axis lock. Axis locks are provided on very very low end budgets nowadays and are being utilized on everything now that the patent expired. I’m not saying that it’s bad or comparable to anything, sorry, I meant that the price of two springs and two buttons seems to be inexpensive to make. Hard to compare I agree, but the price to produce one that is user friendly is relatively cheap I’ve found.
@neroknives1828
@neroknives1828 5 лет назад
Jon Duncan I’m not trying to be argumentative, sorry if it came off that way. But who spent more time heat treating the bar? How much mill work was/ Machine time was spent on the bar? How much work when into bending the springs to reduce stress? I can go on. I think it’s fair to say that benchmade would put more time into those areas, then a $10 knife would. The same can go for any kind of lock. The same amount of time isn’t spent on fitting a $20 frame lock. As a $500 frame lock. They both look the same. But one had much more work put into it.
@jonduncansakurawallknifegarden
Agreed. Something as small as the angle of some chamfering can change my opinion of a knife and make a huge difference. More money into the knife means more people and won’t put into the design and integrity of the knife. I completely agree. This was a good comparison video.

I own too many of both of these brands and I honestly don't find either brand to be overpriced as a rule. There are exceptions in both brands. Spyderco has more inexpensive models but they are often 8cr13 and made in China (well made but that is a fact). Benchmade has fewer inexpensive models, but the mini griptilian is pretty close to the delica in size and price, you might say it's even a little higher quality. Spyderco is overly attached to the spyder hole and Benchmade is hooked on the axis lock. I really think it is a personal preference, beauty is in eye of the beholder thing.

Better steel with 154 CM in the first knife. Aixis lock is stronger than frame, liner, or back lock. (Compression lock is fine with me however). The Axis lock is easier to handle one handed. I prefer the larger handles of the Benchmade to the smaller Spyderco, although this is not always the case. I especially do not like the opening hole of Spyderco when compared to the easy opening of Benchmade knifes. It is all a matter of preference, not necessarily quality, I realize. It is good to have different options to quality knives such as these two knife makers.

A lot of money can go into production of an item and it can still be overpriced, even if it's sold at cost. Money spent does not necessarily mean value added to the finished product. I'm not saying that this is the case with Benchmade (I'm happy with my 940 purchase), but what a company spent developing a knife and producing a copy of it does not need to be taken into account when asking if something is overpriced. That is, I don't care if a company spent 1 million dollars more than they needed to create a knife, that doesn't add value to it.

I think that most Benchmades and Spydercos are fairly prices. They’re both premium brands. And as other people have pointed out the Benchmade warranty is part of their cost too and everything is made in the US. Both companies have individual models that are stupidly over priced. Fuck sake the Spyderco Drunken.. I think thats what its called... either way that shit is as much as a fucking Sabenza. Also I don’t know if the Axis lock is stronger all it takes for it to stop working is the Omega spring to take a shit and your knife doesn’t stay open or closed. But if that were to happen all you have to do is send that shit to Benchmade and they fix it. So... there is that. I think the Compression lock is my favorite locking mechanism personally. But thats just opinion.

If you were judging by size of the knife, blade steel, lock type and materials used Benchmade is more expensive than Spyderco. Let's say you wanted a Benchmade knife with a Carbon Fiber handle. It's generally more expensive than a Spyderco knife with a Carbon Fiber handle. It's cheaper to buy aftermarket carbon fiber scales for a Griptilian,. Benchmade charges 500$ for a "Gold class" Griptilian with carbon fiber scales. On some models Benchmade is over priced. I have never seen a Spyderco model over priced. I love how Spyderco comes out with Sprint runs in different color handles and different blade steels. Benchmade quality control issues do not help either. It seems that Benchmades reputation has fallen off a bit. Spydercos popularity seems to be growing.
