I almost minored in philosophy, with a major in Chemistry, I just got tired and decided to graduate before I completed the minor. But for a long, long time I have been saying that philosophy is the most important subject that we're not teaching in public schools. I am convinced the world would be a different place if we started with epistemology in grade school and grew from there.

I double majored in Philosophy and exercise science. I love both of my majors and I can say that adding Philosophy as a major in my junior year was one of my best decisions. I may not have found a “practical use” yet but I will forever be grateful towards myself for investing in a major that makes me happy. I love training myself to think well. I think there is some very important skills philosophy teaches that no other major can like analysizing an argument, showing sympathy to an opposing argument to give it a fair representation, instilling a sense of caution enough to make you question but not so crippling that’s there’s no way out of doubt. There’s no other major that can train you to be curious and fair like philosophy. So yes, I wish philosophy was free but more so I wish education was free so I can keep learning.

I'm almost done with my undergrad in music(comp sci minor) which is already financially risky as is. As a child I always wanted to be a scientist, inventor, astronomer, etc but when I got to college I found out very quickly I wasn't disciplined enough to handle the demands of the ivory tower. It's less that "it's hard" and more that undergraduate work is so mundane. I'm debating a masters in the philosophy of science in the hopes of being a science communicator, or science political advocate, or even a voice for progressive policy and argumentation. Obviously, we live in very politically polarized times and the notion of "facts and logic" is heavily fetishized. My reservations are less so financially but more so, that advocacy or any kind demands a great deal public intellectualism, and rhetorical proficiency. These skills can be learned but one of the hardest issues with science communication is that of narrative and categorical failures. Like how does one explain thomas khun's rejection of epistemic certainty to someone who's political, and religious identities demand that knowledge is objective?
@CarneadesOfCyrene
@CarneadesOfCyrene 2 года назад
Science and philosophy communicators are essential and a very cool field to be considering! As someone that tries to explain these concepts to a broad audience, I find that concrete examples theories can be useful, when they are not oversimplifications (though that can be hard). You can always combine all of that with your music and computer science background to make catchy music videos explaining complex concepts in science and philosophy. I would watch them! :) Best of luck!

I'm glad you're doing this series. I have very mixed feelings about my philosophy degree. Because I'm passionate about philosophy outside of my career and am slowly trying to contribute something of genuine novelty and value to the field to the extent that I can do so in just my free time, it feels nice to at least be able to point to a lowly BA in the subject, even as worthless as that seems toward those aims; at least I studied it a little, even if I'm not an actual professional. I also feel like I learned a whole lot about the subject while getting the degree, which has been very valuable in figuring out life in general, which is the whole point of doing philosophy in the first place. On the other hand because I don't use it for anything career-related, I feel like I really ought to have studied something of more directly practical applicability (I think philosophy is all about practical application, but in a very big picture, broad, abstract way, not so much of direct use to putting food on the table), and I'm kind of embarrassed to tell people that was my major. If I could do life over again with foreknowledge, I would double-major in computer science or software engineering (the field I actually work in now) and philosophy both, and try to apply them together in the field of artificial intelligence.

What makes you think you cant major in computer science anymore or get a degree or experience that is similar to it? Is it your student debt or something?
@Pfhorrest
@Pfhorrest 2 года назад
@@jonashartwig738 Going back for another degree would cost me money (the first one was free because my family is poor and I was a first-generation student), and require that I step away from my existing career in the field to make time to study, which risks disrupting it even worse than not getting that degree in the first place did. Basically I just wish the start of my career had been different because my education had been different -- I ended up in the same field anyway, I'm just way further behind in it than I would have been if I had made different decisions 20+ years ago.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Computer science is interesting because I feel that there are at least some connections to a philosophy major (learning advanced logic definitely helped me learn to program). I also feel it is something that is easier to learn outside of a classroom than some other fields (though that may just be my bias). I will say generally I think philosophy is a great double-major option because philosophy touches and is connected to so many other disciplines, so you can always pair philosophy with whatever else you are doing. Finally, I would say if you are admin'ing the largest philosophy discussion community online, you are definitely using your philosophy major in a great and important way! It is arguably a more important thing to do than if you were a professor publishing esoteric papers that one or two other people read. We are more than our careers, and arguably some of the most important things we do are outside of them (though my bias as someone that does philosophy as a side gig may be showing her as well).

Undergraduates should consider minoring in philosophy and combining it with a practical degree in STEM. Or at least taking one or two philosophy classes as electives. I'd suggest a course in logic and critical thinking. And one course in ethics or an introduction to philosophy. Taking philosophy courses can teach you to use logical reasoning, think critically and organize information. It also teaches you how to frame issues, ask penetrating questions about issues and how to grasp the implications of issues. Philosophy courses can also sharpen your writing skills. Combine that with a practical degree in statistics, computer science, etc. that's a hard hitting combination that can really help you in your career. One of the best undergraduate classes I ever took was a course in logic and critical thinking. I still have the books more than 20 years later. And I took a philosophy course in ethics as an undergraduate. Opened my mind to Immanuel Kant's ideas and other great thinkers. I use this knowledge daily. Philosophy is a great hobby and side hustle. I love watching this site's philosophy videos and I read philosophy texts with great interest. But I would discourage students to only major in philosophy without a 'practical' major such as finance, economics, statistics, computer science, programming, etc. You might have a hard time getting a job after graduation.
@CarneadesOfCyrene
@CarneadesOfCyrene 2 года назад
I mostly agree with your assessment, always good to study more and get a double major if you can. Philosophy pairs well with other majors since philosophy touches a bit of everything, and can be particularly paired well with STEM majors because it is more focused on reading/writing, which can fall by the wayside for some STEM degrees. The only caveat I would add is if you are expecting to go on to a graduate degree, say in law or public policy, you probably don't need another major (as you won't be looking for a job until after graduate school, and law and policy are quite practical).

I'm in Law School, and we have a mandatory Ethics course. This first semester reignited my passion for philosophy and made me read Aristotle in my free time. I used to think that if I wanted to be happy, I had to major in something I liked, but now I'm glad I chose Law School since it's financially stable, and I can still take philosophy electives and do a Master's in Philosophy in the future. Knowledge isn't confined to a degree but to what you invest your time in. Also, don't be stupid and major in something you can't pay your bills with. It's better to be a lawyer and have enough money to pursue art in your free time than to be a struggling full-time artist and barely have enough money to live a decent life.

I was majoring in political philosophy for 3 years and in my last year I withdrew and enrolled in computer science. Within one year of enrolling I found an incredibly well paying job, and I still read philosophy constantly as a hobby. I did this last year and it wasn't easy, I worked really hard and studied for hours everyday but it worked, I thought for so long I had made a mistake but I persisted. I believe my humanities background has been instrumental in my ability to learn quickly and to understand the multiple perspectives required in solving problems for different groups of people, that results in a high paying career. One thing I discovered early on in college is that you don't need it to learn things. This is pretty obvious but every class I have ever taken comes down to simply reading the textbook. If you do the readings then you will pass easy as that. Lectures are useless, as all of mine were always the professor rambling about something usually unrelated. If you want to learn and study something then just do it, textbooks, articles, and journals can all be read for free due to piracy. You can easily follow a course curriculum on your own without going in to debt. This won't allow you to get a job in philosophy, but a degree in philosophy 99 percent of the time won't let you get a job in philosophy. Just read on your own time while you can learn practical skills that can give you a financially stable future which can allow you to retire early so you can pursue philosophy unencumbered. Or just do it as a hobby like me. Also, a lot of the technical leadership people I work with don't only have a background in computer science, a lot of them went back to school for a graduate degree in philosophy which is really interesting. So if anything, get a decent paying career and go back to school if you really want to. Just my 2 cents.

Interesting view, I'm glad that it worked out for you! One of the things that we will talk about in the "should you get a philosophy degree" video is learning styles. For people that can learn and pursue philosophy outside of a classroom by reading books and watching RU-vid videos, a formal degree may not be the best choice, particularly if they are not looking to pursue a career in philosophy. Though a few classes might help to give you the basic terminology to get started. In the video on jobs with a philosophy degree, we will look at how a background in advanced logic can help you learn to program. I certainly appreciated having a background in logic when I was learning various programming languages.

@@roxanne2749 at my university we don’t have to choose a particular area, the only thing you would really choose is whether or not you want to do philosophy or the logic/mathematical side of philosophy. At my university, they offer many classes in all areas of philosophy. It’s up to you to take the courses that interest you the most in the areas that interest you the most out of the viable options that will fulfill your requirements. For example: I have an interest in theory of mind, political philosophy, metaphysics, and epistemology. So, I take all the classes I can around those topics, but you will be required to spread your wings a bit into other areas that might not interest you much. I’m also required to study two philosophers. I chose Spinoza and Heidegger. (I also took Kant almost all the way through and then dropped at the very end due to medical reasons, which was actually awesome because I got to study 3 philosophers instead of two 😀) Just to show you the broad range: I have also taken philosophy of social justice, philosophy of citizenship, race, and ethnicity. Theory of meaning (linguistics) ancient philosophy, modern philosophy, political philosophy, one logic course (logic 12A is required for us) and “methods” which is also required for our major. Methods teaches us how to write a philosophy paper. My only regret: I wish I could have taken all the classes that are offered. This is why I am considering a dual program for law school. I really REALLY want to take a metaphysics course. I really want to continue philosophy and don’t want to have to choose between law and philosophy. Must keep going! All in all, it’s been pretty rad. I’ve been exposed to so many philosophers and so many different areas of philosophy, old and new. It has been truly intellectually fulfilling for me.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the others you have listed, but I am definitely going to look into them now! The one area of philosophy at my university that is severely under represented are Asian philosophers. I do have a great interest to study them on my own time, because of the ones I have been exposed to have been amazing for many reasons. One of those reasons is because the Asian culture and religion is clearly reflected and it’s enjoyable because it’s so different. It’s a really nice change of pace. I’m actually excited to dive into the others you mentioned. Who do you recommend first? Yes!! On RU-vid there is an entire theory of mind course from UC Berkeley. It is taught by Searle. It’s about 28 lectures (I think?) Also, there’s a Harvard philosophy course taught by Shelly Hagen. That one is really good! Also, Keith Frankish has done interviews and presentations on some of his work in philosophy of mind that you can find here on RU-vid (illusionism). The same can be said for David Chalmers, he had a presentation on RU-vid as well on his meta-problem of consciousness. There’s also a lecture on integrated information theory of consciousness by Morch. That one is definitely interesting and trippy. As a beginner, I would start with the Harvard lecture course by Hagen. You should be able to find the PDFs for the reading pertaining to what he’s lecturing about. If there’s anyway possible, definitely try to find the reading and actually do the reading before you watch the lecture. That will help you be able to move on to something a little more difficult like Searle and his course on philosophy of mind. Also, if you need help on how to write a philosophy paper or need tips for reading and annotating the readings… on RU-vid search for : UC Berkeley how to write a philosophy paper… And also search for : UC Berkeley how to read philosophy … there’s a lot of great tips and advice for beginners. It will seem complicated at first, but you will get the hang of it!

I honestly think it’s a failing upon the professors for not properly showing what this information can be used for. The logic I learned from Aristotle is literally the same thing as what a computer does, it’s just formatted slightly different. If you just learn how to express it that different way, your golden. The best part is that most of my supervisors at this point don’t even want me to explain what I do. They just ask for the functions to be put in place.

I was a philosophy major at one time. I realized it was never getting easier, or I was never developing a knack for it. I changed to liberal studies, and took on American Studies (a field my mom thought I would do well in). I felt weird about some of the "political correctness" that has more or less surrounded the discipline since the 1960s. I also felt odd about the so called, "late stage capitalism" people would sometimes refer to. Also, at that time I fetishized certain pockets of Western European and Japanese historical counter-culture, and to some extent avant garde and experimental art forms from Europe (but in some ways from the U.S. too). The American Studies program couldn't facilitate that. At some point (like many people), I was just done with school. I did the capstone class and walked. Then I struggled with underemployment.

Philosophy is practice. It only eludes the security of the self-evident. That is what makes it philosophy. Many interpret this withdrawal as irrelevance or uselessness. But this is only the dictate of the self-evident, which deceives one. Philosophy does not offer "wisdom." But a profound, sometimes gnawing, sometimes painful examination of one's own prejudices. All study used to be philosophy. Science used to be just called "natural philosophy".

A sociology degree gets a lot of the same jokes as a philosophy degree. ...but Now convince my parents that an Art degree was worth it!

Depends on what you do with it. The world needs plenty of designers, and creating art can bring such happiness!

The practical worth of this degree is hardly ever considered. Why would any corporate leader want someone to point out inconsistencies and incoherence of a system that already has everything in place and that's streamlined for optimized profit? Unless you are there to never question and " shut up and go to work". Which is fine, if you are ok with selling yourself out. But then I'd much rather not have wasted my time in Undergrad only to become mentally dead. Philosophy Majors tend to either go all the way to the PhD and get on a tenure track or go to law school. And this is while having a day job while in School and not incurring debt, with a GPA above a 3.5. Any less than that, and you're on the school-to-barista pipeline. Is this dignifying for Philosophy majors, or anyone really? Our industries ought to tackle the most pressing concerns of the day. Averting war, fighting against the adverse effects of climate change, vanquishing poverty, etc. It is about being an advocate for something. To use the logical part of rhetoric to influence the people to making better decisions. It seems that it is PR that needs Philosophy most. But I think an exercise of judgment is crucial in deciding who to work and advocate for.

Major in Computer Science so you have great job security and understand the modern tech world, and then minor in philosophy and spend your free time in clubs are other activities around philosophy.

A good idea for many people (or double majoring if you have the time). And both are in some way built around logic. What are True's and False's but the ancestors of One's and Zero's?

I'm more negative about studying philosophy, especially in the anglosphere where you might need to go into debt to get into the programme. You need to be highly structured and know what you want to do with a degree afterwards, much more so than with other degrees, where the career options are more obvious. College is not like school and you can't just chill during summer, you need to get practical experiences. If you are (like me) a person that struggles with procrastination and structuring your life you should consider doing a more practical, more defined degree. After my bachelor degree I felt quite hopeless about my future and I am now doing callcenter/customer service jobs, but I hope that I'll be able to change career paths to journalism or something else.

By mid-career the average philosophy major is making $81,000 per year (or around $40 an hour). We'll talk about some reasons for this in the other videos in the series.

One of my two disciplines was philosophy (the other was American Studies). I had a terrible time in college. A lot of people would say I spent too much time unemployed or underemployed after it. Look up the autism unemployment rate (I have autism). It is much higher than the neurotypical unemployment rate.
@CarneadesOfCyrene
@CarneadesOfCyrene 2 года назад
Neuroatypical folks often have trouble in the job market because, unfortunately, a lot of hiring committees hire based on social cues, like how much they like you in the interview, and affinity bias, not on actual skills. It is not easy.

Honestly Carneades, I know neurotypicals can have trouble with social cues, but honestly people with autism spectrum disorder have more trouble. I think really, only the socially adept have little trouble with this.

If you won't read the 9th volume of Jung for fun, a philosophy degree is worthless. If you will read it for fun, a philosophy degree is worthless. Get a systems science degree. You'll be just as happy, and employed.

But what about people who want to read advanced primary sources of philosophy but don't have enough understanding of the discipline to do so. I.e. people that would read philosophy for fun, but don't have the background knowledge to start?
