What's a "Punt" in Climbing?

"Punting" is the act of dropping then kicking a ball, but in climbing it means something a bit different. Just as the original definition you quite literally get kicked off the wall when climbing.

Punting is more about falling off the easy sections of climbs after the crux. It’s the easy extra point portion of the climb after having made the touchdown by doing the crux. Punting is not falling in general. You could also accurately use the term for falling off something well below your typical climbing grade.
@Mdjagg
@Mdjagg 3 года назад
Agreed. Weird to make a video about a definition that isn't even correct. Punting is a specialty term because it doesn't happen all that much. If falling off the crux move was punting, then it wouldn't be special at all.
@TheFriskyTurtle
@TheFriskyTurtle 3 года назад
I haven't heard the term in climbing, but I hear it used in board games and video games meaning to make a losing mistake from a winning position. So failing on an easy part after a crux would make sense. The metaphor is that you have possession in american football and you just give it up for no reason.

I needed this. After only taking up climbing recently, I was struggling for a whole session with this one problem at my gym. I must have tried it a dozen times, even after getting some tips from a more experienced climber, I just couldn't make the last move. By the end of the session I had all but perfected the moves up to that penultimate hold, but I still couldn't make it. Next time, I'm going to do it!

I'd gotten the impression from the way people use the term that it doesn't just mean "falling" but more like falling off the project specifically due to a kind of half-assed attempt because you suddenly lost it/knew you couldn't do it/made a dumb mistake/gave up. But I guess not?

Agreed. Punting isn't synonymous with falling. (Otherwise why have the term?) Punting is a subset and specific type of falling. It is falling (for whatever reason) when you feel like you should not have fallen and the climb was in the bag. But language terms can vary from region to region and perhaps it's more general where Albert lives.

There was a competition at my local gym which lasted for a month. Now usually there would be a finale which you could qualify for if you were in the top 30 (its one of the big gyms in Vienna so there were over 700 contestants). Now this year there was no finale due to corona but since I was so close to the top 30 (37th place) I tried to get into the top 30 although there wouldnt be a finale... That really gave me motivation to get out of my comfort zone and try one of these awfull new style parcour routes and after a lot of punting and swearing I got it done! After doing some other really hard problems I actually got to 21 place at the age of 15... So always keep fighting and try out new things even if its not a lot of fun in the begining and remember it doesn't matter if u punt because climbing is about more than success it's about having fun!

Nice video. In my opinion, being able to deal with failure is very important, probably more important than the ability to send. I've seen some climbers throw a tantrum after they fell off a route... I feel like they missed out on a very important life skill that climbing has to offer.
@thegreatzoom5073
@thegreatzoom5073 3 года назад
Important to distinguish tantrums from passion. Some people will throw a fit over every little failure, while others are simply so focused and driven it's hard not to be emotional and have an outburst. It's forgivable to scream and be frustrated when you fall off a project that you've poured yourself into for weeks and weeks, but it falls more into tantrum territory when every fall causes a fit.

I used to climb with a big crowd of very friendly but brutal people. Once you'd done the crux, and where then romping to the top they'd start calling their "red point round" at you. If you "pipped" it (as we call punting) they would roar "At the chains!!!!" At you. If they felt you deliberately fell to avoid paying for the round of drinks you may be expected to pay for a Forfeit round. Tough crowd.

I think punting can be best described as messing up an opportunity or advantage. In climbing messing up on the last move is like a football team having the opportunity to score only to punt it back to the opposing team.
@theonlymegumegu

I tried a 13a sport climbing at my local crag for several days after redpointing another two 13a's apparently harder than this one but always falling at the top before the chains, it was so frustrating and my attitude was so bad in the last attempts that I decided to give it a break because of mental health. It feels terrible trying hard and not success falling always before the chains but I guess is also ok to just step back. I love and enjoy climbing so much but this was making me hate everything around that has to do with climbing, it is really hard to deal with all the emotions because of failing. It's been a few weeks since my last attempt and I'm struggling thinking in trying again because of the fear of failing again and the bad attitude returns, I guess is not the time and this is one of the life lessons climbing has to give. Thanks for the video man, learning a lot from you.

@thegreatzoom5073
@thegreatzoom5073 3 года назад
It's just what it sounds like: you tear the skin on your hand. Chalk dries your hands and helps maximize friction, so when you have a lot of friction sometimes your skin can tear from the load. The tear isn't like a clean cut; it typically leaves a flap of dead skin hanging off and can sometimes bleed. Good technique can minimize this, but some holds are simply brutal and can easily damage your skin on a fall.

@grantedwards648
@grantedwards648 3 года назад
I've always considered the term 'punt', when applied to climbing, to derive from the British slang word 'punter' - meaning a customer or a client, member of an audience or indeed the customer of a prostitute. British climber 'Dirty' Derek Hersey, famous for his free soloing exploits in the 80s (particularly when he moved to the United states), would greet roped parties as he casually climbed past with the words 'aye up punters!'. A slightly derogatory greeting that I assume suggests that they are the amatuerish audience/ the consumers and he is the expert/professional performer. Punter - meaning your average common or garden variety of climber. Hence when dropping an easy move you might say 'I'm such a punter'... To 'punt' would be to fall off the easy section of a climb.

@olivierlessard6783
@olivierlessard6783 3 года назад
I don't think you're getting the point of the expression. It's a metaphor. In american football, punting is a strategic move done when the team on the offensive is nearing it's last tries at getting the next down (which would let them a few more tries at getting the touchdown) but knows it's not likely going to make it and therefor chooses to kick the ball as far away as possible in the opposite team's half of the field so that when they get their turn on the offensive, they are as far as possible from the first team's touchdown. The metaphor here is that of giving up strategically when one knows he or she's not going to top a climb. Therefor, a punt is not just falling, it's falling on purpose as a mean of being ''more ready'' for the next chance at topping. The metaphor has its limits, of course. We can also interpret it differently and use it as a way to qualify a fall we judge one could have avoided if they had had more willpower at the time of the fall. Using it this way, we're suggesting the climber sort of fell on purpose because he or she didn't believe enough in their capacity to top the climb. I believe using the expression in a way that doesn't carry in any way the semantic of ''giving up'' is wrong... or at least it is not consistent with the origin of the term and therefor its etymological roots. But then again... language is an ever-evolving thing, especially when terms are imported from one context to another. Maybe right now, for most users of the term when referring to climbing, it simply means ''to fall'', but I still believe the nuance that its football origin brings is a rich addition to climbers' vocabulary.
