Considering that 73% of young people aged 18-29 didn’t vote in the 2022 midterm elections, I really don’t find it shocking at all that 64% of teens would prefer TikTok over voting rights. I mean, if you’re not using your voting rights anyways, why give up TikTok?

I’m going to be honest, I think this entire thing has nothing to do with propaganda , it’s all about the money that politicians can make.

TikTok not that long ago added a built in shop to the app so you can scroll but instead of clicking links to some other site or app you can purchase the item you're watching a video on in the TikTok shop with ZERO shipping and it's drastically cheaper than what amazon sells, which is hurting companies like amazon, and of course Instagram and Facebook are getting dominated by TikTok and Americans aren't seeing any of that green, Instead of making an internet law to protect data and make things more strict, them demanding China sells TikTok is pretty blatantly explaining why the US is doing this in the first place, The last internet law i can remember is net neutrality and that shit got nerfed so some companies can make their websites run faster and other websites slow, instead America decides "actually it's too unsafe sell it to us now or else" total bs greed

I couldn't care less about tiktok, but the law shoe-horning in the ability to make sure that we are only able to access U.S. approved media is terrifying for freedom of information. There is a reason it is being compared to the horrible patriot act.

Some extremely wild stuff here 1: American politicians overwhelmingly banding together to break down a monopoly is something I never thought I'd ever see 2: Bobby taking over would be an actual Avenger level threat and 3: The fact that some random guy I've never heard of just casually has 28 Billion lying around while investing a vast majority of it in TikTok thereby putting that money in Chinese hands

Marketing Monday is easily my favorite segment on all of RU-vid, we need more!

This bill is so diengenious its not even funny. We have so many different devices as well as many of those devices components also made it China, that it literally doesn't matter anymore. If the people behind the bill actually cared and weren't just projecting that narrative because they think it sounds good and people would recieve it well why not just go straight for a ban then? No, they give them an alternative route to divest, aka an american company buys/take them over. That one thing tells me this is has nothing to do with the protection of the people but rather it's a ploy for the people at the top to get more money and more importantly, more control on what information is set and how it is sent out. If you have purchased any, and I mean any, device that has network connectivity within the last 15 years China has all the data they could want on you lol. It's crazy that what 80% percent of the house voted in favor of this while sooooooo many bigger and more important thing could use that kind of cohesiveness. The political tops pants have been pulled down and their greedy asses are on full display for what they are. In my opinion, there is no ambiguity as to what their motives are for this one.

I don't think Google and many other company are banned in China, correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what I heard. They were never banned, they just didn't want to comply with local laws so they shut down their platforms in China, Microsoft respected local laws so Bing still operates in China. One of the main reasons they don't want to comply is with local laws is because of privacy regulations since google depends on collecting user data for advertisement purposes.

Tbh any major American company can recreate the formula of TikTok and many of them already have for better or worse (mostly worse). There's nothing intrinsically special about TikTok that makes it neccessary. If an alternative can be made that isn't in the hands of China, then why not?

Hot take: separate RU-vid and RU-vid shorts into two apps. Like Instagram and Threads… but better. So if you’re in main RU-vid you get usual long form or “landscape” experiences and shorts for short vertical content. It would fix content creators subs from the distinct main form and shorts form viewers messing with analytics. They can still combine on desktop just because it doesn’t really need to change, but they could separate the channel view where if you click on shorts, it switches to their shorts account and can view specific saves and likes. Shorts is only really a mobile experience and probably wouldn’t benefit them, but would be a QL improvement.

I think their reasoning is dumb as hell but it probably should be banned anyway, and not just tiktok but infinite scroll video in general needs to be regulated. That shit is designed in a lab to be the equivalent of digital crack, it's unbelievably addictive and horrible for mental health, like it's literally the rat in the box with intermittent reinforcement experiment with human subjects. At the very least I would make it so that there are mandatory page breaks on every social media site instead of endless scroll and for short form video specifically, every like 10 videos/5 minutes you watch you have to wait for a 2 minute timer to run out to give you a chance to stop and consider whether you really want to keep wasting time watching garbage slop content for hours on end.

Nothing is more 'American Congress' than getting a massive influx of feedback from (especially young) constituents at the scale never before seen stating they don't want a bill to pass, then reacting by doubling down extremely hard and passing the bill with a nearly unanimous bipartisan vote
