What's Actually in Bagged Garden Soil Products, Which Ones Do You Need, & How to Make them Yourself

Bagged soil products are nothing more than a mix of peat moss, wood products, earth, and some fertilizers. They are the most expensive way to fill your garden containers and beds. You can make a better product for a lot less money.
Peat Moss 3 cu ft $23
Top Soil 1 cu ft $3.25
Garden Soil 1 cu ft $4.50
Raised Bed/Garden Soil 1.5 cu ft $9.97
Raised Bed/Potting Mix 2 cu ft $9.97
Potting Mix 1 cu ft $9.97
Thanks so much for your support! Cheers & Thanks, Gary!

I made a monumental mistake when I filled my hügelkultur raised beds. I filled the dug out section with wood and native soil, but the raised bed part I went out and bought a raised bed "soil mix" from a local landscape company. Several years later come to find out there was no soil in that soil mix. I discovered this with my microscope last year, then confirmed it at the landscape Co. So this year I will be amending 2 raised beds with good old dirt. So many new and old gardeners are led down the path with bagged products and nursery jargon. Made some new raised beds last year, 1/2 native soil, 1/4 leaf mold, and 1/4 aged compost. Everything I planted did fine and dandy. Great video, Stay Well!!!!

Nice to see you've done an update on this. People really need to know about bagged soils and ways to create their own. The most expensive way to buy fertilizers is in a bagged "premium" soil/potting mix. I guess my base mix would be 50% coco coir 25% soil and 25% homemade compost (because I have it) Peat moss is expensive here in Australia and banned in the UK now. Coir is a good substitute. Great video!

Even though you make these videos every year, i always appreciate it. A tip worth mentioning is that some home improvement stores (such as my local Home Depot) will pile up all the bags of soil/mulch/compost/manure that were torn or punctured and sell them at a discount. I find these ones will sell out quick, so I recommend going to the store right as it opens. Also, the discount isn't marked anywhere, so I recommend asking a cashier or customer service rep about the discount before wheeling a 200lb palette cart up to the register (Just this morning, one cashier wasn't familiar with the discount so she wouldn't honor it, so i moved to the customer service desk and they did).

The 4 Home Depot in the NE part of Ft. Worth(Texas) have stopped selling the Premier peat moss. They have replaced it with a Miracle Growth product which is really fluffy and expensive. Their standard top soil has grass burs. Lucky Lowes has bales. Sounds like the geese are going home.

My earth is florida dirt which has a lot of sand. So I've added leaves, blood meal, bone meal, some leftover worm castings, left over top soil, some 10-10-10, some coco coir. It's starting to look better. I haven't try to plant in the ground yet though. And I'm going to use cardboard for the small pathway. The space is 10ft x 8ft. My seedlings are about ready to go in the dirt. They may just die, lol. I'm prepared for that. Most of my plants are in pots and totes. Heard it can take about 3 years to get your home dirt at it's best. So my garden is all over and I'll still have something to harvest if this is a flop. I am looking at this as an experiment for now. Thank you for continuing to teach us stuff like this, we honestly need to know it.

I've really valued your videos especially cutting to the quick on organic gardening at home. This video has lots of valuable perspective and you do a great job of informing the viewers about what's going on with bagged soils. In the UK a law took effect that will end in a blanket ban of the use of Horticultural Peat Moss as a commercial gardening medium by 2030. That's because Peat bogs cannot sustain the extraction required at scale. This is true across the globe, even in Canada where 25% of the world's Peat Moss is extracted. Peat grows so slowly, the industry cannot or will not regenerate enough to replace what's taken up. Setting aside the climate impacts of releasing carbon sinks, consider for a moment the forces keeping Peat Moss in commercial supply. Peat is a multibillion dollar industry in Canada and the efforts to cast it as renewable and sustainable are not dissimilar to that of the oil and gas industry or the tobacco industry. Commercial Peat extractors lobby and market as an eco friendly option precisely because they understand it can't be harvested at scale and replanted fast enough to balance the loss. I respect you've made a video showing your viewers a cheaper alternative to bagged mixes. I've even learned from other elements of this video besides the peat recommendation, and knowing the facts about Peat does not make me trust your advice any less, but the Canadian Peat industry is going to have to shrink significantly if Canada is going to meet it's Paris Climate accord target. Peat bans are in the works across the Commonwealth, Canada may soon follow suit. The next time you make this type of video, consider offering Peat alternatives. There are many and some of them are even more cost effective than Peat. If you feel you must recommend Peat, please at least inform your viewers that there is a growing movement to ban Horticultural Peat, if for no other reason that it may not be available for as long as people will reference your videos.

The only good alternative is compost. Coco Coir doesnt do much better. Forest are cleared, lots of energy to clean and prep, lots of carbon to transport it. I make my own mix. 1part peat, 1 part black cow, 1/2 part vermiculite, 1/2 part perlite. I add bone meal if potting up tomatoes and peppers. Blood meal in every mix. Some rock phosphate or azomite in most mixes. There is a big difference in the quality of bagged compost and peatmoss when I buy them. I sift everything thru 1/4" hardware cloth. The last 3 bags of screened black cow filled a 5 gal bucket with bark. I want composted poo. Bark is $2.00 a bag. BC is $8.50 Sometimes hardly any bark, clay and rocks. The cheap compost is $2.50. But is 1/3 debri. I put the bark and wood to good use and as mulch or put in my in ground beds.

Mixing this 50/50 as you recommended and adding a bit of perlite. Please is this going to be ok for my raised pots? Anything else at all I should use? Thank you for your advice.

I ordered 7 types of bagged soil last year. I just wanted to start seedlings. All of it seemed designed to deliberately kill plants. Only after a lot of rain did one pot get better. I had part of a bag left over so I tested it with PH strips. The PH was over 8, so that explains that one. Even Miracle Gro soil killed onions, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. I dumped the rest except the one bag of "organic" soil that was basically muddy pine bark. I got soil from the woods this year and I`ve been creating a garden with it.

Last fall I mixed cheap topsoil with a liberal amount of sawdust in my 4in raised bed and now (Feb) I have worms. For sciency reasons I don't understand you have to do this in the fall so the sawdust has time to breakdown and give nitrogen back to the soil.

I know where you're coming from and appreciate that you showed what was in each of the bags and explained everything the way that you did. The problem I have is that you're only looking at component prices vs completed product prices and not showing the cost per cubic foot of your mix. Just soil from your yard mixed with peat moss comes in at $7.67/ft^3. Combine it with just the bag of top soil and you're now at $10.92/ft^3. Kellog is only $4.99/ft^3. Sure it has alot of wood chips in it, but those are great for the bottom of a raised bed. There are entire farming practices that center around filling the bottom of the row with sticks. I really like using peat moss and the red clay from my yard with fertilizer mixed in for the top of my beds, but that bag of Kellog is my go to for the bottoms of my beds, because it's cheaper and contains exactly what's need. Yes it's convenient, but it's also the right product for the right price.

Thanks. A compressed bale of peat is $23 for 3 cubic beet. Fluffed you are at about 5 - 6 cubic feet. Add water and peat can get x3 - X4 larger. This is where you save money. I have been using home made decomposed charcoal in compost/ dynagro and water in old plastic bins as the inert medium in beds and pots. If you soak it in fertilizer for a while it acts like a sponge that holds onto water better but slow releases nutrients. The finer its crushed the better it works, just be careful not to breathe in the dust when its dry. After a few years of reusing, it creates one of the best silt-loam soils that holds just enough water. It's hard to source real "dirt" unless you buy sand, vermiculite, etc so stuff like this seems to fill that void.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I've been making my own compost for years for my gardening needs. I make ~2 cubic yards using composted: grass cuttings, leaves, kitchen scraps, & Christmas trees. Cow manure is excellent for water retention & so are the palms that fall each year from my palm tree. One finished compost pile (~2 cubic yards) is all that I need & it's all free! In fact, I have more than I need each year. I grow almost everything in pure finished compost with a bit of urine for nitrogen & it works great! Free is hard to beat! I have also had it professionally tested & it has all of the nutrients that are necessary for garden soil.

Go buy ourself a cheap cement mixer !!! Buy a used one. Rent one. Whatever. They make life SO much easier for both the initial mixing and when you want to amend. Last summer I set mine up beside my compost pile. I laid out a tarp, and laid out a couple of bags of peatmoss, some top soil, and a 4 cu ft bag of vermiculite. There's nothing super precise about it. Throw in a shovel full of peat, soil, and compost. Top if off with an icecream bucket of vermiculite. Push start and wait 2 or 3 minutes. Dump that out, and do it again. In an hour, you can make a HUGE pile of the most beautiful mix you could imagine, it's really thoroughly mixed, AND, you didn't have to do a lot of straining to make it. It helps to mix any almost composted stuff into the soil. It breaks up a lot of the chunky soil bits. Let's just say it works really well, and it's pretty much the exact same thing the "garden bed soil" companies are doing. Obviously, if you're only mixing up enough for a few pots or buckets, it's not worth the cost. If you're like me, and just keep adding more and more growing space to your yard, it sure makes life a LOT easier. Yeah yeah...it's the anti-Christ to the no till crowd. I do what works for me, and I've had awesome results. You do what works for you. We go our separate ways.

Years ago, there was a mulch company near me, family owned. Natures Helper came from there originally and it was a composted bark product. They sold out to a bigger company and now the product is just crap. Big sticks, lumpy crap and the price doubled 😡 What I'd give for plain old Pine fines at a reasonable price. I come from the ornamental horticulture side when Pro-mix was what we grew in. I always mix my own container soil for my ornamentals, always use perlite for drainage. I got a chip drop 3 years ago and let it compost down. Be aware that organic soil additives in bags can be composted human waste. I avoid it because of what else might be in there and always wear nitrile gloves with bagged soil. I'm in Georgia, most soil sold here has specific Georgia contents, usually 55% or more composted bark materials. We can get Yellow Bag compost here, it's a consistent product but only available in 3 states.

They really trying to get people with this soil racket. I started gardening at the end of last year and said to hell with that shit. Dug my beds, broke up there clods by hand, and mixed it with peat and manure.. and other than starting seeds indoors, I use it for everything.

Unfortunately, more confused after the video than before. What exactly are we looking for? More wood less wood. Walking along squeezing soil and showing prices doesn't help.

I think it helps because it's not about being told what you need. It's learning what is in the products. They can all be used to fill a space. I feel the demonstration at the end gives you a good idea of a base. Peat moss 50% and earth 50% is what I would recommend. If you can make compost that is what you always want. Thanks! I don't know why you are confused. Maybe you should watch it again. I'm an intermediate gardener, been doing this about 5 years now. I thought this was a brilliant, well organized video. I learned more than I knew before, and I have watched hundreds maybe thousands of videos, and I still learned more. I am now a subscriber to this channel. Looking forward to the next video!

What if your yard soil is mostly clay-ish? Can you still use it with the peat moss to make your own soil?
