#Alzheimer's disease is neurodegenerative, which means it's linked to a progressive destruction of the brain's #neurons.
Symptoms are diverse. The most famous one would be short-term #MemoryLoss, but every cognitive functions slowly deteriorate.
Language, writing and movement capacities are altered. Patients are disoriented. They can no longer recognize their peers and lose their autonomy. Inexplicable mood swings and outbreaks of violence can also occur.
As of today, there's no efficient treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Drugs are used to reduce specific symptoms, but their real impact is debated.
Age, sedentary lifestyle, heart diseases and hereditary predispositions are as many risk factors. The environment also seems to have an impact, but knowledge on these mechanisms is still scarce.
Alzheimer is rarely detected in people under 65 years old. Prevalence rises with age: 15% of people over 80 suffer from it and women are more affected by the disease than men.
Today, 900 000 suffer from Alzheimer in France. This number should grow to a million by 2020.
