Depends on the thermal, and where you’re flying. The Sierra Nevada mountains (west side) where I normally fly in summer it’s usually somewhat high pressure and the thermals are very small and “bullet” is what we call them. They are very turbulent on the edges so banking up really tight is the only way to not fall off into the turbulence, sometimes in spring we get those bigger thermals where we can make flatter turns but not that often.

That is exactly what Brett is trying to say. There are no rights or wrong to thermaling, really. We need to do exactly whats right for any given situation or location as well as the day's weather conditions.

Totally agree, and also you can hear the thermal shear as wind. sometimes i dont care what my vario tells me just listen to the wind and tighten the turn.
