Uruguay seems very small because it is surrounded by giant neighbors and it only has 3.5 million people, but its territory is larger than England, Portugal, and Switzerland, just to name a few.

I lived in Uruguay for 3 years back in the 80's - it looks much the same! Your video brought back good memories - there in the cafe, man, - it could have been 1988!. Yerba Mate actually gives you a slight narcotic buzz if you keep on drinking it - it doesn't get you high, or stoned, or wrecked, but it definitely stimulates - and it makes you think differently about things and focuses your attention on stuff, but you need quite a few refills to get there, hence the flasks! One thing I didn't see was the political posters everywhere, which is a great improvement - the leftist parties used to really degrade the city with literally millions of posters pasted on the walls, beautiful old buildings, the sides of fountains and the plinths of statues all would get defaced - it seems they no longer do that. Uruguay was really safe too, a very non-violent population (when I was there). It's also as flat as a pancake - its highest point only being 500 meters above sea level. It was hard to make a good living there though, all your basic needs would be covered on a local salary, but it's really difficult to start with nothing - for an average Joe there's no surplus of funds, so you can't save nor invest and car ownership is for the middle classes, - or at least, that's the way it was when I was there. After a few years I just felt as if I were on a treadmill - lots of work, but not advancing, so I had to leave. It wasn't always like that though, I think between 1900-1960, the economy was good, and I hope its in better times now.

I'm in Uruguay currently, came to.look foe a plan b for leaving the USA. It's mid December and the beginning of summer, when it rains it's a monsoon, it's quite windy (not my favorite) and the scenery is mid ok. But it's also very peaceful and calm, the people are super friendly. If your coming from The States it is not cheap at all but it's also still growing so get in soon if you want to ride the wave

@leplane_
@leplane_ 5 месяцев назад
@@pinnacleroofing9841 Agreed, though I'll say that it depends on where you're looking for properties. I found them cheaper than in the states or at least you get more bang for your bucks here. Almost everything else it's just as expensive as the US though. For example, a cup of capuccino at the coffee shop rounds out to about 4-5 bucks, that's what I was paying in the states. Eating out it's not cheap, maybe the small street vendors are cheaper. Getting things imported from abroad is also extremely expensive. Argentina IS cheap however, but it's got its cons and pros, like everything.

7:00 It was actually annexed by Brazil for something like 15/20 years I believe, in the early 1800's. It's an important topic in brazilian history since it was when the cisplatine war happened. It got it's independence from Brazil in 1820's but I believe that Argentina kept claiming Uruguay territory until... I believe it was England, not sure, but some european country brokered the treaty that made Uruguay independent.

The first large building in your video is what we call the University of the Republic, which, by the way is free as the rest of the education right from kinder garden. Of course there are private options on all levels for the ones who decide to pay for it. Go figure. You should have gone to Mercado del Puerto located by the Montevideo harbor. The foods( and grilled meats) are out of this world. Another thing : although Uruguay export high quality rice, Uruguayans are not too crazy about it though it is consumed there, not as much as pasta which is another very important staple in our diet. You don't seem to have tried pizza which is something to make a video about it. Regarding of how expensive Uruguay could be compared to other Latin American countries, one has to consider what one gets in terms of quality. You can make it more affordable if you stay with some locals and live like they do. No country in the world can give you all they can offer if you just go there for a few days, Uruguay is not exception. By the way : Uruguay is the second smallest country in S. America after Guyana, though is larger than Holland. Nice video, do go back and expend more time in there, there's much more than Montevideo to experience. Greetings from Toronto.

Uruguay is not the smallest country in South America for one, second it's not the little cousin of Argentina and even less of Brasil. It's condescending to say a country that most people don't know, when you realize it has been around for almost 200 years, it says a lot about most people's education, doesn't it? Also its not a short trip from Buenos Aires, its full of history and offers so many things, that Argentina can't offer. Next time I'd advise you to learn about the country's history a bit more, before you make those comments, specially if you have people that listen to you. Thank you.

Hola. Hello. Regarding what happened to you with the drone, there is a reason. Drones are not allowed in that area because it is the presidency building. That glass building is where the President of Uruguay is. We had a pest problem with pigeons in the squares so a falconry program began, birds of prey were introduced to control the pigeon colonies. And at the same time it was seen that these birds also attack drones, which is why they are still in Independencia Square and not in other squares.

Good overview, and quite accurate. Just a couple of things. What you were drinking was Grappa Miel not grappa. It is a liqueur made by adding honey to grappa. You can order traditional grappa as well and you will find it identical to the Italian original. As far as your lunch, I think there may have been some communication issues. The lettuce on your plate was simply a garnish, if you order a salad with your meal you get a traditional salad. You could have also ordered other sides as well. I've never seen anyone get plain rice as a side in a restaurant in Uruguay. As far as mate goes...well it's a national obsession (much like football) that is unmatched even in other mate drinking nations such as Argentina. You can go into a restaurant and ask for hot water and they will happily fill your thermos. There are even vending machines that disperse hot water. It is drunk in all seasons, at all times of day and locations. You will even find it being drunk by politicians while at the national legislature during debates.

I'm a native English speaker. The vlogger speaks highly of Uruguay. He spoke briefly of it's history and culture. He pointed out some of the foods common to Uruguayans. The worst thing he said about Uruguay is that Uruguay is the highest priced country in the region.

Good video. Liked your comparisons between Uruguay and the surrounded countries. I would like to have heard more in your history section on the Afro Uruguayans and how Montevideo, was a required port of call for slave ships bringing Africans to the Río de la Plata region.

No, not exactly cheap for gringos. Yes, safe it is - day or night. But it is affordable if you aren’t desperate

re: maté, you do actually move the bombilla. It depends on the person serving but all the old timers including my Uruguayan parents move the bombilla to get varying degrees of maté flavor intensity. Whoever told you they don't move the Bonilla was probably talking about their own particular style or they're just not good at it. Like eggs, many, many people make eggs but I've had terrible eggs and delicious eggs... I happen to make delicious eggs of course. I've had people serve me amazing maté and of course, terrible maté and it all comes down to how you manage water and bombilla placement and how you tend to the llerba throughout the process... it's all about the process since there's obviously only two ingredients for the most part. Great video never the less.

It's mate, not "maté".

"maté" means "I killed". The beverage is called "mate".

Im from Buenos Aires, and i only move the bombilla before refilling the mate. Slight tap on the side of the bombilla with the thermo, move it 5mm to the side. And use that gap to pour the water to the bottom. Thats all the moving you need.

@@Coyote27981 I was just in Uruguay visiting family and there were several different styles of prepping and serving and moving or not moving the bombilla. Like all things in life, there’s not just one way to do things. It’s worth exploring other possibilities as it’s those explorations that lead to new discoveries. Thanks for sharing you method. Try moving your bombilla around the mate over the course of your drinking time, there may a something of value there… or not.

In mythology The Ourea were the primeval gods or spirits of the mountains , and the word for mountains in Greek.Uraguay means a country of no mountains . Poros is one of the greek words for sea, Paraguay means no sea .

A friendly correction to the vlog. Luis Suarez, beside being one of the most famous Uruguayan footballers, and Liverpool Football Club, he was famous for biting the opposition's defenders, something that he got fined, and banned from playing a few games, but, he didn't handle the ball. That was Diego Maradona from Argentina in a match against England in World Cup 1982. Maradona, later on went on to claim that it was God's hand that scored the goal that knocked England out of the competition.😁

It was a tactical foul and he was rightfully given a red card. No one was robbed. Player should have made the penalty kick.
