What's good about Cairns plus my cost of living in my adopted city

There's lots of things to like about Cairns. Most of the year the weather is fantastic. The flat I'm living in so much nicer and more roomy than my old shoe box in Melbourne CBD. The people here are friendly and strangers occasionally say hello. Pace of life is slower and people are more likely to chat. The cost of living is fine for me although some people visiting my channel say it costs more here. Everyone's lifestyle is different and mine is a bit on the frugal side when it comes to going out. My great indulgence is overseas travel which is indefinitely put on hold due to corona.

Great post thankyou Doug. Very interesting. In case my comment is being read by others I worked at Cairns Base Hospital for two years and yes I can attest that it's a top notch hospital. To get technical for a moment spinal, severe neuro trauma, neuro surgery, severe burns, some Oncology treatments etc do require specialists in Townsville to treat and occasionally in Brisbane but that would be quite rare on a case by case. I worked in Rehabilitation and it's a great hospital. Doug mentioned Trinity Beach and I lived there for 2 years. It is one of the northern beaches suburbs, an area stretching from Machins Beach up to Palm Cove. You would probably want a car to be living in these suburbs......they are serviced by regular bus routes but for instance on the couple of occasions I caught a bus from the centre of Cairns to Trinity Beach it took about 45 minutes.

@ yep it's a beaut place to live. Smithfield shopping centre is only a short drive away too. Palm Cove only 10 minutes drive to the north and because Trinity Beach is about 25 minutes north of Cairns by car it's only 50 minutes up to Port Douglas. Doug's in a perfect spot for someone without a car but if you're keen for a slightly less "build up" area the northern beaches are great. Remember Doug's gone from the centre of Melbourne to Cairns, so Cairns CBD area to him would be a different perspective to mine .... I've lived now most of my life in the Newcastle/Hunter region so Cairns CBD still feels pretty big to me.. Machins Beach is too close to the airport and gets jetcraft noise but all the others are fine.

Good to hear about Cairns hospital from an insider Andrew. I spent a night there recently and it was the best hospital food I've had. Better than what I got in a private hospital in Saigon.

I’m planning to move to Cairns and work in the hospital’s ED, would you be able to provide some insight on the type of problems that typically come into the hospital? Also, do you by any chance know the general age of patients as currently I work in an elderly dominated area where it’s so rare to get a young person (16-30) and so I’d love to work somewhere with more youngsters

I can think of a lot worse places to retire Andrea. My ultimate sea change takes place when I move to Trinity beach next week prior to moving into my own home in Kewarra beach late May. Very exciting!

Great info! You should head up to Ravenshoe on the tablelands during summer. At an elevation of 930m it's a lot milder climate. Cheers

Hi Doug, I recently on dec 2nd got to spend a week in Cairns when the borders finally opened. My wife is Thai and we have 2 boys 3 and 6. We have looked at cairns as a place to live in the near future as Sydney where we live now is very expensive. I do gardening/ handman work and my wife dies Thai massage. I am hopefull we could re establish in cairns but need to investigate the schools etc. Thanjs for your videos as they are very informative.

Hey Doug. You should go onto RU-vid and watch “Life in Australia: Cairns.” You will see what our city was like in the 50’s when the population was 25,000.

Hey there Doug. I’m a Canadian looking to head out to Australia this winter on a working visa. I am hoping to get a job in construction as that’s what I’ve done for years so I can make some decent money and stay there a full 6 months. Would you say there is good opportunities for work out there at the moment? Also, obviously the ocean is beautiful there, but I know Queensland has a lot of other interesting wilderness and wildlife. Is it fairly accessible to get out into the bush for things like hiking, camping or maybe even hunting if I can swing it? I live near the mountains here in Canada and love all those activities, was hoping to see what Australia had to offer in those areas as well.

Cole there seems to be plenty of work for skilled labor here right now. Of course that could change. Cairns has encountered boom and bust before. Right now I'd say things are pletty healthy. Need to keep in mind a couple of big building firms have gone bust so a recession may make things challenging. Check out a few more sources before you take the plunge. Good luck.

Hi Doug thank you great informative video! Are you still in cairns? 2 years on, how is the crime now? Have you encountered much? Considering moving but coming from a very safe rural town where crime is non existent, I read you shouldn’t walk at night in cairns?

Still here in Cairns Ashton. Now living in the Northern beaches where crime is rare. Was much worse in Parramatta Park near Cairns Central where I used to live. Had two push bikes stolen.

That is subjective though. Port is too cold for me and the sea temp isn't quite high enough. But the beaches are amazing. Housing price is expensive though.
