What's Growing on My Markers? The Company's Response.

Several months ago I went to color with my #Coloring markers that I got from Hobby Lobby only to discover something gross growing on the tips of the markers! My first thought was "Is this toxic?" I wondered if it was mold or fungus!
So I created a video showing the growth, but decided to wait to publish it so I could first give the company (Art Alternatives) a chance to respond. It took a few months, but they replaced the markers with a reformulated product and explained what that growth was.
In the end, I learned it is a de-salinization process occurring in the markers and is NOT toxic. Phew! They have since reformulated their markers and upgraded their nibs. The new markers will be released under the name Art Alternatives Illustration Markers. You can see my first impressions in this video.

Hey so you know mold can grow from watercolors rarely too if it's kept wet or in humid enviroments so they aren't 100% safe from getting ruined too if you don't use them up : D

I have had alcohol based markers for over 6 years now and i have never experienced anything like this on any i have ever owned. Im fact I don’t think any markers i have ever owned ever had anything like that growing on them. And a funny thing is i forgot i had a pack of markers i had bought, and they were just shoved away somewhere in the back of my closet, until i found out i had them like 3 years later, lmao. I thought they had gone bad by then, dried out and everything. They were actually fine 😂 no mold or dried out. Still have some of them. Things like this can happen to anything, not only alcohol based markers.

I don't think anything alive can grow on ALCOHOL based markers, so to anyone finding that on any marker don't panic if something like that occurs, you're gonna be fine :> The reason I think like that is y'know if the thing grows on something it means that thing must be consuming some minerals or something like that to stay alive and grow. If the marker alcohol based then nothing can grow - alcohol is very deadly to living beings, that's why alcohol is used to sanitize different med-related instruments.

Yep, reminds us of the very basics. Color is basically ground dust of said thing of color. We have better ways now, but basically no matter the form of art, we are still using something of an organic nature so of course its to be expected ether dead or alive. Colors are alive, what gives vibrancy.

@@zegamingcuber857 no, there's only one, which is found in uci's and is under investigation, other than that what matters is the alcohol %, because not any content of alcohol will kill bacteria (they can in fact grow on things like alcoholic drinks)

I've had this on markers in the past. All I did was wipe off the gunk and the markers worked as normal.

Thank you so much for this video! I discovered the same thing with these last week and threw them out. I'm amazed how everyone in the comments has seen this before because i, like you, was grossed out and confused as to what in the world was going on. At least now I know and don't have to be worried. My friend was worried it was mold and I don't take that lightly no matter how unlikely it was that it was mold. My husband is very allergic so I don't play with that. So I wasn't going to just wipe it off and keep going like other commenters have said. But now that I saw your video I'd still toss them just because they don't seem to be the best quality anyway so it works out lol. But again thank you for finding out what was going on with these strange markers!! .

Yep, always happened when I was a kid, we just wiped it off and kept going. Would never throw them out, they are perfectly fine. Bonus if you can get them cheap because of this non-issue!!!

I taught childrens art off and on for many years, and I have seen that happen before on waterbased markers that sat unused for a very long time. I guess I assumed right it was the ink separating or drying out a bit. I just wiped it off with a tissue and kept using them.

Yes, I had this with a set and I just wiped it off and they work great. I bought the set for a quarter of the price so I wasn't too concerned. It was only on a few markers. I suspect they had been sitting around for a while.

This same thing happened to one of my Copic markers. Initially I was wary of what it might be and quickly closed up the marker. When I had the nerve to open the marker again, I saw that the growth was crystalline. The crystals made the nib hard and unusable. Thanks for finding out nature of the problem. I had tried to find the answer a few years ago on-line, but was unable to find out anything. Now I know - yippee!

FYI...Copic nibs are not rubber...they will fray over time. Last time I checked, rubber doesn't fray...lol That was pretty gross. I has actual mold growing on water based metallic markers once. Not fun.

I got a few of these a while ago (might have been when they came out) and ALL of the markers did this after a few months. These #coloring sets were pretty terrible quality tbh, tips weren't good and fell apart after a few swatches, colors weren't saturated, then this moldy-fungus-looking thing happened. Glad to hear they fixed their markers but wish I hadn't wasted my money. Side note: the Artist Loft sketch markers (sold at Michael's) are a good spot to start for absolute beginners which is where I fell in love (wait for a 50% coupon and get the big 24 set and use marker paper for best results). They're nowhere near the quality (or price) of Copics but they'll definitely get your toes wet when it comes to alcohol markers and they blend alright with the Copics too. *Side side note: I work at Michael's, have a BA in art and I make art regularly. I buy and try a lot of different markers and supplies when they come in for the love of art and the search for the best stuff.*

I’ve seen this process on copics though not so extreme and the growths are typically harder and look like more like crystals. This tells me that the copics use less salt in their formula or have something inside them that inhibit them from the desalination process. I also feel like the rubber tips help in preventing the crystals from growing as it’s not as porous type material for salt to seep into. Typically i just make a few brush strokes and they disappear and won’t return unless i don’t use a marker for a while. This also happens to any marker that has a really messy and ink filled cap. It’s good to regularly use some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip or cotton ball to clean out the caps. Great informative video and the dramatic beginning was hilarious 😆

I have had this happen to quite a few of my Spectrum Noir alcohol markers, they do still work if you clean off the tip but I have not been impressed with this either. Nice to have an explanation Jenifer, thanks

I had the same problem plus more about 5 months ago. I got a set of #coloring markers. My main problem was when I first started coloring my color ran out and the tip totally disintegrated. One of my other markers were like yours. They sent me a new set and right away I had a problem with the same color in the new kind of set. I took my markers out about a week ago and one of the other colors the tip was disintegrating. The product is not worth the money. They have also know about the problem for a while. I think they should have taken the product out of the stores.

Sadly, they were the new ones. I had different colors though. My original old ones were the blues. Lightest blue marker was the one that disintegrated, my darker ones has the crystal stuff on it. When they sent me new ones, I got the pastel set.(Art alternatives packaging). I was excited at first, then the blue ran out after coloring very small area.

Chances that it was toxic were very low, but, it’s not something you want to use on your art. What would bother me more, is how much time and effort it took you to get a response.

Yes, the delay was frustrating but not uncommon unfortunately with my experience with manufacturers. It helps sometimes to have the clout of a RU-vid channel to swing around, but even that doesn’t help with some obscure Chinese companies and very large companies.

With such a large marker supply in general, do any of the markers have an expiration date before you get to use them all? Do the alcohol ones smell? Which ones does Rosie (Rosy) advise I invest in?

Oh, I used to have a lot of crayola markers. I thought this was perfectly normal for low-budget and generally cheap markers. Eventually all of them had those.

I got some pretty cheap markers and it happened with those ones too , crusty, clumps of ink on the ends . I strapped it off and the marker worked fine ever since but it was still really gross 😖 it also happened once with a spectrumnoir marker once and it hasn’t happened to any others just that one . It’s nice to know I was wasn’t drawing with a moledy marker

I had this happen with Prismacolor alcohol markers about 20 years ago. I'm pretty sure one was yellow-orange, so I wonder if the de-salinization problem only happened with colors that included yellow pigment. I wiped off the tip with some paper and kept using it because it worked fine.

That's just dripped ink from the marker which gets crystallized on the air. It can happen to any markers. You can wipe that with a tissue. In the video shes way too dramatic about it.

The only marker I have seen do something similar is the black Copic markers. They crystallise sometimes what I have seen

I’m glad I know what it is now, a couple of my markers had that on them and I’m completely new to alcohol markers so I had no idea what it was. I just wiped off the tip because they still worked fine and I wasn’t gonna waste 60$ or go through the hassle of getting them replaced. I’ll definitely buy a different brand of marker though whenever I’m in need of a new set.

I have three sets of those #colouring markers that I got a year ago. And I had the strange growth too on the markers that I used a lot. This video helped me a lot to understand about my markers! Thank you for making this video!

You are just too, too funny! Your little furry lady makes me smile too! I have VERY old art markers that have that issue, but most of them still worked okay. I knew it was some type of crystalline reaction of the ink or the dye pigments, but it's nice to know I was right!

I just tried to use a pack of hobby lobby markers I purchased probably over a year ago. They weren’t the same brand. But I noticed these weird growths too. It didn’t really gross me out, I wiped it off and oddly the markers still worked great. Some of the nibs look damaged now but they still work smoothly. I was curious about WTH was going on with them though. Lol thank you for the info.

Yeah unfortunately i bought all of the different packs from Michael's awhile back and they all do that but i have had quite a few different type of markers do this so it is quite common!

Oh, I've actually seen this! It was on a couple of my blue Artist's Loft alcohol markers (light blue and denim). I was able to scrape the "growth" off with a craft knife. I always assumed it was a low quality ink or something, but now I know what was the actual problem!

Hi! You mentioned in another video (I think it was about doing swatches for pain relief) that you’ve made some actual swatch books for people to buy. Do you have a link or anything for that? Cos the way I’m swatching is not fun. I’m doing 3cm x 3cm squares in 250 gsm paper, cutting them out separately and putting in order of shade, onto a clear sheet, I stick the squares with double sided tape and that way if I come across a darker shade, I can move all of the ones I’ve already done down. I don’t sort by brand or whether they’re gel pens or brush pens - only their colour. And I bought a LOT of pens before I started swatching and each colour has a huge drawer that needs to be done and is stressing me out. So I’m quite anxious to see a different way of swatching and buying a book that already has the squares drawn would be fantastic... I write all the info about the pen (I’ve done up my own numbers eg G01 for the first green) and have to tape onto the actual pen what that number is... it’s turning into quite the nightmare. So, do you have any swatch books available to buy? X

Also, the tips break down quite easily. Rigid for a few draws and then they fall apart.
