Long time Sheelagh viewer, first time commenting. Thank you for sharing. I can relate. When I get 2-3 weeks into a tour, I miss my dog (and family) tremendously. I appreciate your candor, much respect. Keep on being you.

Its so nice and refreshing to see actual authenticity on youtube. I'm also a person thats never really "chosen a path" like you mentioned. I've always felt self conscious about it but you reframing it the way you did, and so positively, really changed the way I look at it. Thanks for that!

Rock on with your bad self! Don't let the haters change you; just keep being yourself! Your videos have helped me a lot with planning and logistics and I am hoping to both go on a big trip this year and hopefully work on posting some of it on my channel! Thanks for the inspiration, and keep being you. PS sorry to hear about the kitty :(

I've only been watching your channel for a couple of months. I have been road biking and bike commuting for around 50 years. Also, my spouse and I have had many a weekend trip, day trips, and centuries on our trusty Burley Duet tandem the past 20 years but no prolonged bike touring/camping. I found you in an effort to learn more about bike camping/touring overseas as we head towards retirement with a goal to get to know Europe and other parts of the globe via individual bikes. You are just what the doctor ordered. Thank you thank you.

Sheelagh - thank you for your content! It is always great to watch someone who is clearly super passionate about the thing they're talking about. You are one of the creators that inspired me to go on my first tour ever last year. I went to Nordkapp and it was truly spectacular! Who would have thought me, a 30 something year old female, would be capable of something like that! So thank you for being here, for putting out content that helps others to experience life in new and exciting ways! Here's to new adventures in 2024, may they me grand or small - they're still adventures that we get to keep with ourselves forever and ever. Take care and be your goofy self - it's the best!

I’m a big fan of the channel. Your videos help me plan and figure out my first few bikepacking trips. They also provide a lot of inspiration for me. I like your down to Earth and honest style. Sounds like you really know yourself well with your goals for 24 so well done for figuring that out. Sorry to hear about Cheesecake, makes total sense to re-focus. Look forward to future videos. Came across your channel because of the bike touring videos through Switzerland and France. Subscribed and stayed because of your honesty, openness and positive attitude. It's a breath of fresh air amongst all the fake social media people out there. Thank you for sharing your story and your thoughts with us. I know it's easy for me to say but please ignore the haters. You completely have the right to be you and they have no right to claim otherwise. You owe your audience nothing, you are providing us with free content after all. Myself, I can identify with many of the struggles you mention. I'm in my mid thirties and discovered bikepacking as a hobby/lifestyle over the last two years. I want to do so much but I have family commitments that I have to honor in the first place. I would be interested to see how you get on over the next year facing the same kind of challenge, balancing your passion with the rest of your life. What worked for me: Even though my bucket list is like 100 items long, only set one or two achievable goals per year. Then you'll be happy and proud that you accomplished them. Anything extra that you do from there on is just a bonus. Thanks for entertaining us and keep us in the loop on how things are going!

Thanks for your video and your honesty. I’ve been watching since your bike touring nutrition tips and love your sense of humour. Well done for making the decision to change your plans and focus on spending time with Cheesecake. It would have been hard to enjoy the trip and fully immerse yourself if you’d been preoccupied with worrying about how she was the whole time. New Zealand will still be there when you’re ready. My partner and I first started cycle touring about 8 years ago. The first trip we booked all our accommodation in advance and knew exactly where we were going, now we have a looser idea and have got much more relaxed about trusting that we will find a place to camp (or a room if we prefer) at whatever mileage the day dictates. We generally ride between 40-90km per day depending on how we’re feeling/weather/terrain/what interesting things we want to stop and take a look at on that day. For 2024 we’ll be taking the ferry from the UK to Amsterdam and cycling from there to the south of Germany :) We’re still not brave enough to fly with our bikes yet though! Best wishes to you and Cheesecake. I’m looking forward to watching whatever interests you next.

Thank you so much Julie! Sounds like we have very similar touring styles :) And thank you for saying that - it really would have been hard to enjoy the experience if I was away from her at this time. You can have adventures right on your doorstep! No need to travel the world! Just explore and appreciate what's around you. I will come clean and admit that I am worried about climate damage caused by flying and driving so that colours my opinions a lot but I do truly believe there is so much to explore and learn about so close at hand. For 2024 I will be trying bike touring/ bikepacking more seriously. I have the gear and opportunity - the only thing stopping me is my own excuses!

Sheelagh, When I was your age I pushed because I was strong and I could push. What I realized is, I missed so much because I set such high daily mileage goals. Now, I ride 30 mi days. This gives me time to arrive, settle in and see the towns where I stay. I try to plan my rest days around the weather. If rain is forecast I will take a rest day. Sometimes I just have to have a rest before a weather day so I take a rest. I still had a great trip in September and October this year riding over 1000 miles in five countries. As a nutritionist, you are more aware of your body's needs than the average person. Trust that and do what is right for you. I have a dog and I totally understand your wanting to enjoy your limited time with your cat. There will be time for bike rides. I'm 66 and Still rolling along. Take care of yourself.

Hey Sheelagh! You've been one of my main inspirations for bike touring. Finding the balance between the adventure and a career is something I'm working on. Hi Sheelagh! Life is short, gotta soak up the time with loved ones 😺Really related to your comments about RU-vid criticism. It can be really hard to not let it impact what you film and edit. While editing we are sometimes so tempted to edit out the negative aspects of an adventure, because we know we will get criticism, but we want to show the true experience the highs as well as the lows so try to force ourselves not to. Have a good time slowing down and taking care of you! :)

Hi Sheelagh! Thanks you for sharing your wonderful intentions for this year. You are very inspirational and down to earth. I always enjoy your videos especially tips and tricks, nutrition, gear reviews and how to improvise when needed. Keep doing what you want. I dabbled a bit into bike touring a few years ago but got a real bug last year. There is always so much to learn and so many fun adventures. Looking forward to your workshop - I’ll keep an eye out for it. Have you ever thought about doing a Q&A live stream?

Thank you so much for the kind words Julie! Agreed, so much to learn and fun adventures to be had :) I'm planning a Q&A video with beginner bike touring questions for next month but not a live one. Thank you for making this video! I have been wanting to get into bike touring/ bike packing. Due to a variety of reasons (time, gear, money) I haven't been able to do my first trip, but I have been working up to it in the form of long day rides. But I was still getting down on myself for not quite achieving what I had set out to do last year. But this video is part of the message I'm learning to tell myself. I can take it slow. I can make it fun.

Yessssss definitely!! Also, it took me years of thinking about my first bike tour before I did it, and then the pandemic hit and it was quite a while before I was able to do my second. I think you have the right approach -- keep doing the little things that set you on your path towards your goal and one day you'll pull the trigger when the time is right :)

Hello! I stumbled across your channel last winter after somehow falling into a bike touring rabbit hole on RU-vid. I’ve commented on some videos and appreciate that you always take the time to reply. Last February I made it my goal to cycle tour Europe as a reward for finishing my masters (only really started biking in 2019). I finished my courses in August and took my first short bike trip on Vancouver island. I’m currently in the planning stages of doing the Eurovelo 15 in July and battling the self doubt and overwhelm that it all entails! Trying to force myself to just commit and roll with the punches. So sorry to hear about Cheesecake. My kitty also had some health complications last year and it really takes a toll on you. Try to take in those hibernation days to recharge and chill. I’m accepting that that is the point of winter.

Ahhh what an exciting reward! I totally hear you on the self doubt and overwhelm, I totally felt that way for my first big bike tour (and still do sometimes! haha) Just keep taking those little steps forward as you are. I can't wait to hear all about it! I am sorry to hear of your kitty's health complications - sending you much love. Winter hibernation with kitties sounds pretty great :)

Been following your channel for quite awhile. My favorite video so far has been your travels in Switzerland, that country is high on my bucket list of places to visit. We have 10 kitties at home with the oldest being almost 14 years old. It's been tough on us to go more than a long weekend but the last couple of years we've been able to pull off 2 weeks at time. If one of them was sick we definitely would be staying closer to home. They are a big part of our world but we are their whole world. 😻

10 kitties!? Oh my gosh, that is amazing. Their lives must be so full of love and play. That is beautiful. We were only in Switzerland for 1 week and felt like we saw so much. With 2 weeks you could definitely have a really incredible trip. I hope you make it there when the time is right! And thank you for those beautiful words: They are a big part of our world but we are their whole world. I appreciate that so much.

I enjoy your perspective on bike touring...I had a cat that recently passed away, which I always felt guilty about leaving when I went on month-long bike tours. I will NOT be getting another one until I stop with the long bike rides. Too much guilt at leaving them! I miss having a pet, but not now. Maybe when I get OLDER. Pets keep you stapled to your home. I can totally relate that your pet is immensely valuable to you as your cat has accompanied you through such an adventurous time in life. I also really appreciate that you're showing publicly that plans and priorities can change, and that it is okay to stand by yourself and your needs. Feel free not to fulfill people's expectations with regard to your channel - I'm sure that most of your viewers enjoy not only the adventure bike videos, but everything bike-related. I for one would really appreciate hearing more tips on mental strategies for bikepacking, especially for when you're in your own and are tackling a really long ascent (I'm doing a solo biketour, my first one ever, this June crossing the Alps from Basel to Milan).

hope you will have great fullfulling close moments with cheesecake. I love watching your videos, not only because it deals with biking adventure, but because it has vidéos from someone looking at life from a very unique perspective who happens to share some same passions as me. the contrast between your personality and the mix in your interests is what makes your channel attractive for me. And to be honestly, I dont like it when people self identify themselves around one passion, one job or one activity, because it is simply un-natural.. It will be another new experience for you, and I will be enjoying whatever you like to share while surfing through life and going with its flow of events.

You really shouldn’t worry about the negative comments, you are an inspiration. I’m trying to plan my first trip and you have really convinced me that I should do it. Keep going.

Aww that means so much Ian! That is really exciting :) Any thoughts on where and when the first trip might be?

My original thought is Eurovelo 1 which goes down the West coast of France. I’m just deciding which would be the best equipment. I’m looking forward to any advice you have in your future videos.

I teach mostly because I love the interactions I have with students but also because I love and need the summer down time. I completely understand the need to take time, slow down, unwind, smell the roses. I also understand that in our society, we are encouraged to buy into the notion that taking time, slowing down, is somehow inherently lazy. We live in a Strava KOM society. I love the view from the mountain but I’ve learn that getting there fast isn’t the only way. Pardon the figurative language and my rambling. Be you, be happy! See you on the road.

Hehe “Strava KOM society” definitely! Yes that down time is so key. Although I was looking forward to escaping Canada’s winter, I think a hibernating winter with my fur baby will be beautiful in its own way ♥️ nice connecting with you and see you on the road as well!

Pets are important, we have two older dogs and it makes me sad to know that their days are numbered. My plan for this year is to biketour Berlin to Vienna. I had planned this for 2015 but then life got in its way. It is really difficult to prioritize biketouring with full time employment, a small farm, family and elderly parents. I also have a yt-channel (just passed 2k subscribers) but I took a long break from posting last year, I felt that I had no new ideas and I couldn't put more hours into the films to improve. But I will try to instead accept that I have reached the level of quality that can be expected for the amount of time that I want to spend, and do films for my own fun and documentation. I think I subscribed to "My Hardest Day Cycling Across Europe"

Aww I am sure they are very lucky to have you 💛 I can totally appreciate how challenging it is to balance all the life commitments that come along. I hope you do make it to your Berlin to Vienna trip, I bet that will be spectacular! And I think that is totally fair and natural to need to take breaks from a youtube channel. Please do let me know your channel, I'd love to check it out!

@@paulhadfield8006 I assume, it's probably great having a relationship with you, when you clearly aren't even able to listen to and hear what a person right in front of you is saying to you. She explained everything.

Early last year I did my first long bike tour, I planned it in considerable detail. But thinking back over several decades, the tours I enjoyed the most were the ones I did when I had little to no knowledge or experience of bike touring, did hardly any planning and decided my route as I went along. For my first trip I used an old roadster that was about two sizes too small, I strapped a sleeping bag to the rear rack (no tent or shelter) and just set off, very slowly. I slept in a field, a church porch and a park bench. I meandered along lanes just trying to avoid main roads with only a very vague idea of where I wanted to end up. My next tour will probably be similar, just with a decent bike and a little more gear, experience and knowledge, but no schedule or detailed route, just a rough direction. I say all this because the first part of your video reminded me of those early days. Sometimes we worry too much about what we don't know and become afraid of the associated uncertainty. The best times I've had have never been planned. I'll stop rambling now. Sorry to hear about your cat.

Lofty Goals often fail, buy trying to reach them would be the better goal than a target itself! You do not need to copy JaYoe World tour, Ryan Van Duzer escapades or Bicycling Tour Pro style tours because cool weekends can be epic. New York State has many free camping opportunities where you can do fixed point camping along with several day trips on lazy farm area roads. Do note Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania still have Elk unlike Ontario. Elk whale out ghostly sounds that can be fun if you are ready to hear them. What about a warm showers tour of Manitoulin Island, looking at the map it shows 3 hosts (2 in the east and one in the middle. I am not suggesting to concentrate on Warm Showers but they are part of cycling. Maybe it could be cool to do some stealth camping on a trip then tag the vlog as "camping with Steve" to get exposure, he gets hundreds of thousands of views on som. vlogs

Last summer I had tour plans that were stopped by damaging an Alsop Softride Suspension one inch quill stem I tried all the local shops but non had any solutions that met my needs. All they wanted to do is sell me a new touring bike with way too many hard to fix on the road features and costing me thousands of dollars that I just can't muster So I ordered a stem from Amazon just to find out that the adaptor for my 25.4 handle bars was too sloppy for my trust. Things are getting out of hand as our local shops don't carry even an eight speed chain or a square taper BB, one shop doesn't have bikes with chains they sell around 500 belt driving 14 speed Rohloff Speedhub bikes per year. they even had an E-bike for over $25 000 with an advertised 150km range (I hope that didn't sell) As result It was almost Remembrance Day when I had all the parts, season over! I didn't stop riding though on Labour Day I bought a NOS 2014 Catrike Expedition from a local shop, YAY, ME! Now I officially have too many 2 and 3 wheel pedal cycles. My cycling bio: 4 years old (1972) stunting on a kids delta trike on 2 wheels, got away with ramming by accident a parked 1959 Chrysler New Yorker, the owner thought I was cute, i caught a trailing wheel in a edge of the sidewalk! I likely was cute but non of my sisters agreed. BTW, my sisters were not permitted on that man's property! At 11 BMX was it, we had an elite group of which I was in. 1986 I bought a great mountain bike with drum brakes, but they should have used a cassette hub to stop bending axels. 100% of future bikes had cassettes! In 1989, I bought a Cannondale Sport Touring 400 bike (L.L.Bean labeled) at L.L.Bean Factory store $178 USD. Nice ride but horrible side pull braking for loaded touring. in 1990 I couldn't stop at a stop sign on a steep 17% down grade sign in Maine, but all traffic missed me but did collide with each other, one person DEAD! BAD DAY, I can still vividly see those cars and the Midland trucker coming at me even today! On the way home in Ellsworth, Maine's L.L.Bean Factory outlet I found a 1990 Cannondale Touring 600 (L.L.Bean Classic Touring Labeled) with powerful V braking, $299 USD (My current touring bike) Now upgraded with Deore XT, a 3sp internal 8 speed cassette rear wheel suspension stem Randoneering bars index with friction gearing, ready to ride, 33 years later. I still have the ST400 which I outfitted for sprints (its mass is 17lbs 6oz) where the sloppy yet upgraded braking is acceptable as long as there can't be any pacelines in 1992 I bought a Devinci Vandal MTB that fall at 50% off. in 2020 I bought a Taiwanese 2010 ActionBent Tadpole trike, 24 gear test to see if trikes are fun, HELL YES THEY ARE! In 2022 I bought an EVO Old Man Winter FatBike, Nice floating on snow 26" x 5" tires but a yukky 1x10 gear set, NO MORE "ONE BY" gruppos. I need a low gear at the cranks! 2023 NOS 2014 Catrike Expedition, big step up over the ActionBent (Performer J90) Longest tour Coast of Maine from Lubec to South Portland mostly on US Route 1! Favorite Tour Northumberland Straight Moncton to Cabot Beach PP PEI, to Montigue, and return on NS Route 6 Longest day ride 212km from PEI NP to Moncton, not including the ferry ride distance started at 4am got home at 11pm won a bet that I could finish it! Best event: Granite State Wheelmen imperial Century NH to Kennebunkport Maine turn south to Salisbury, Massachusetts and return to NH; rode my Devinci MTB with super loud Specialized rocky terrain knobbies keeping up with a group of triathletes who hated the noise which they couldn't talk over! As a bonus I beat my friends times! I have done 35 to 40 sprint triathlons (one Olympic), about 10 well hated Duathlons (but I'd do more if I could & I would still hate the second run though!) I am a decent swimmer and a great biker. Also front crawl MUST not be the only swim one can do as I have found that sidestroke is faster for me in rough waters due to better sighting, and better breathing! Dream 1. Pacific coast December/January south bound Dream 2. Electrify the Catrike 250w midrive focusing on assist and add 300 watts of Solar on a canopy to reduce and recharge, a T-Cycle Wintr Windwrap Fairing and tour on it. add a Yaesu FT-818nd all band HAM Radio under the deflector and travel ~200km per day stopping to activate HAM Radio POTA parks along the way.
