Work has begun on the construction of a multi-million-pound commercial workspace development in Jaywick Sands. The site will house 24 affordable business units, a ten-pitch covered market, training room, café, public toilets and a community garden on the seafront. The project also includes upgrading the pavements and lighting on the former Sunspot site and surrounding land.
Is this good news for the once popular resort? I take look and see how it's progressing

During WW2 German bombers would often dump all their bombs when intercepted to lighten the load and increase their speed in an effort to get away, there were a lot of bombs dropped around the Essex coast and my Essex born grandfather complained that not once did they have the decency to hit Jaywick, I don't think he was a fan of the place.

At 55 years of age fate saw me and my late wife retire. Wife was ex nurse, 12 hour shifts 5 / 6 days a week, me on 14 hour nights on AERO space parts production some weeks 12 nights long. lived a great life WHEN not at work.. March 2003 it stopped overnight.. We had a family of 5 home, 3 bed extended semi nice area but no income for me, only the wifes.. what to do.. Sold it all up, bought into Jaywick, was a small bungalow on 2 1/2 plots, we had it extended, eventually ended up with a patio, a grandkids fenced off garden, a 26 foot long car port for my landrovers behind a gated entrance in the next road.. Own it all outright and been retired here 18 years so far, sadly the wife only had 12 years in retirement bless her but she lived life well before cancer took her/ thats life it happens.. SO GLAD I SOLD UP EARLY AND RETIRED.. Here till I die, and still "only" 74 - lol

JAYWICK was not built as a slum area,it was turned into a slum by tennants.
@dalskiBo
@dalskiBo Год назад
Incorrect, it was built as temporary summer houses only, which is well documented & known. After WW2 the need for housing & the incompetent selling-off of government housing moved tenants into the originally designed temporary housing. The local council earned a reputation for non prosecution of unscrupulos private landlords, uninterested in their tenants welfare nor meeting their legal obligations to provide fit housing, which attracted the worse private landlords, parasytically feeding from the locals. It all stems from the local council's failure to prosecute rogue landlords in a timely manner, they are not prote tung their people. You would not pay for repairs to a landlords building. The whole systemic rent-seeking landlord brings no value, it extracts value. Most people in UK cannot afford to do that, nor should they be knocked for having not done so.

I recall seeing something somewhere that Jaywick was the victim of NIMBY-ism from neighbouring areas thus denying them facilities. It eventually became run down and a place where people were effectively "dumped" because it was cheap. I am so happy to see that there is some life being injected into the area - not surprising really as a nice location on the Essex Coast with house and land prices such as they are would never ever remain cheap for long - the seaside will always attract people and bring in speculation - it is I think how Jaywick started.
@ianburit3705
@ianburit3705 Год назад
Just look on rightmove house sales for CO152JZ for local prices, yes some are ex rental but lots are nice owned properties with prices rising fast at last. The beach front walkway shown has nice sized bungalows for well over £200.000 while ex rentals in the worst part of brooklands go for £50.000 with lots needing work before the buy to let landlords buy them..You pays your money and takes your pick as always.

We went to look at property in Clacton and decided to take a look at some of the caravans for sale. We saw the sign for Jaywick, at the start there was some lovely places but as we got deeper in, we saw a man hanging out of a huge bin legs in the air, next a boy with his parents laying flat out on the streets, weed was starting to be smelt the deeper in we went and all that I thought was, I'd never want to break down here at night. Saw people sitting on door steps stoned, broken windows and run down homes. I had read about Jaywick a year ago as to how it became this way. I really don't know how they'll ever change it. It could be a lovely place a stone throw from the sea, it's just heart breaking to see the decline and poverty.

Great video, nice positive spin for a change. Please try and go back to Jaywick Martello Tower - Thurs -Sun 10am -4pm (weekends only Oct - March), it’s a great Arts, Heritage and Community venue, and a bargain for £1 (children under 14 free and dogs welcome). 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Best thing about Jaywick is it's beech! Personally I've always preferred to spend time around the Jaywick beach bar, and loved that I could get a cup of tea/something to eat/ice cream. Used to visit with my dog when she was alive and she loved spending time on the beach. You can walk along the sea front all the way to Clacton. The area is very run down and looks unloved, I suspect the local council has little interest in the poorer area that is Jaywick and hasn't invested a lot of time or money there. Last time I was there (3 yrs ago) all street lights were turned off at midnight (great for burglars!). Watched bin men remove household waste, drop lots on the ground and just leave it there to fly around! Go in middle of winter, and you'll be depressed in no time!

Never heard of it. Fascinating how neglected much of our coastline is given we're an island nation.

Jaywick benefits by the sea is a must watch for those that are interested. Can be found on YT. A great insight in to what Jaywick was years ago.. Enjoyed the vid Tim

Seems like polishing a turd but Tendring District Council have done wonders with Clacton's seafront, so I guess we'll see.

There lies the problem though Tendring council and Clacton udc before it never spent a penny on Jaywick . Happy enough to take the rate money but until they were shamed into it didn't spend there . They wouldn't even put water mains, electricity or drainage in originally . They were against the original holiday chalets in Brooklands at the beginning and then pretended they weren't there for 50 years ..

I spent a lot of my childhood in jaywick in the 1970s and spent many happy times with my children right next to that little hut on the beach, jaywick has a bad reputation but I still enjoy visiting to this day and it’s good to see investment put into the area.

I've become slightly obsessed with Jaywick, for some reason, even though I live in New Zealand! I've watched a number of videos on it, and feel like I'd like to live there. It looks laid-back and 'cosy', just the sort of town I prefer. Mind you, I live across the harbour from the beach you see in my channel's banner image, so I'm already living the good life! P.S. I was born in England, but my parents moved to NZ in the 1960's.

As I commented originally, a very fair and balanced video. I am pleased that you decided to make it available to a wider audience. Jaywick, like almost anywhere, will have some not so good aspects.

You walked the end of Jaywick known as Brooklands where the streets are named after makes if Cars and that end has always been the lest best place even back in the 50s especially after the big storm and flood when theses breached the wall

I find Jaywick strangely appealing and feel I could happily live there. It looks kind of retro, and scruffy but comfortable. It's also good that much effort is taking place to remove the rough edges. I understand what you mean when you liken it to Venice Beach, but comparing the two is, in football terms, like comparing the Premier League to the National League. Venice Beach has great infrastructure, while Jaywick has small stands with few or no facilities.

They were lovely back in the day when they were holiday homes people owned. Now it's mostly owned by lazy landlords and rented out to people on housing benefit

To a degree this looks sort of nice because it hasn't been developed very much. There aren't cheap multicoloured printed signs plastered on every available surface like a lot of the other UK beachfronts.

Was just thinking that. Nice to be somewhere without all the mod cons. Who knows, maybe people will crave this sort of ‘underdevelopment’ in the future. Of course the area needs job etc but not sure it needs any fancy new homes.
