It would have been helpful to explain who actually pays the tariffs. They are paid by the customer not the supplier. So for example, putting tariffs on China is not actually correct. The tariffs are on Chinese goods and they are paid by the Americans importing them. So in fact they are a US tax on US citizens and companies. The idea being that it becomes so painful for the US consumer to pay extra that they either stop buying the products or get them from elsewhere (if that's even possible in the short term). But let's be clear: tariffs are taxes on your own people to persuade them not to buy certain products from certain foreign people.
@2531Prasad
@2531Prasad 5 лет назад
But that also implies that public should buy from local brands not foreign brands.
@markmawer
@markmawer 5 лет назад
@@2531Prasad Your logic is sound but it's not so simple in practice. Many of the tariffs were put on components like aluminium and steel which are needed to make American goods and it's not necessarily straightforward to just switch to a local supplier, they may not have the capacity, so in the meantime these American goods become more expensive to make. Secondly local brands may not actually be made locally but instead abroad e.g. iPhone's which are assembled in China.
@moxncal
@moxncal 5 лет назад
Prasad Bankar the market for used parts would be valuable too. If too expensive to buy from foreign I’d rather fix what I have than buy new.
@patrickkong6922
@patrickkong6922 5 лет назад
Prasad Bankar what you have to realise is that usually local brands in the us are more expensive and may not be as comparable in quality, it makes sense to buy foreign if there is a benefit there and it is for the us to realise that it needs to up its game in relation to manufacturing and quality control/pricing.

@@Sm-ey3lo The video is really lacking because it simplifies something that is more complicated. If the author was genuine to "why" Trump is looking so closely it is on this SM point. What is the opportunity cost for American manufacturers and even service companies to provide their work to other countries means more employment for Americans to provide those goods. Other countries have protected their workers and economy by using tariffs on American products. It is complicated but a balanced view on this would improve the message. It's sad that even the WSJ is producing only half the story. It's because to go deeper and to understand it correctly takes more time and the media doesn't do the hard work to convey it completely.

Betsy Ross was a member of a devout Quaker community in Philadelphia which led one of the earliest of anti-slavery movements in our country's history. Possible explanation: Canada benefits massively from relations with the US, trade being only one manner. Notice the trade deficit between the US and every other country or block, it’s enormous. None of them complain about the disparity but keep on taking advantage and growing stronger. They don’t try to make it fair. So when the US led by Trump finally gets dramatically tough using punitive measures to achieve some fairness, people straighten up or fight to keep the disparity. Canada is not an enemy but not innocent. So America (no doubt with flaws and sins) leads the world in innovation, security, aid, progress, technology, medicine, production, etc., while others siphon wealth and knowledge to perpetuate their own elitist goals and agendas (power & money: socialism, communism, dictatorship, theocracy, anarchy, etc.].

For mid to low tech industries manufacturing days of US is long gone and it is not going to come back. If the argument is to penalize China think again because they could still shift their supply chains and manufacturing to other countries which has the trade deal like Bangladesh, Combodia, Vietnam, money still flows back to China. Building a supply chain is complicated and it takes time, question is can the US hold their breath.

steve crawford. China is the world biggest robber of US Intellectual property, stolen from American patent holders and sold secretly (pay to play) by the Democrats. Trump has seen how the Democrats become millionaires helping China to become economic power by robbing American property. When the US patent holders gets nothing , best is to put heavy tariffs, pay for it, or no deal. Trump is no fool. For over 30 years China have been fooling Americans by dumping copies, inviting US companies to make cheaper in China, exporting back to US, reaping in millions, while Americans have lost all their jobs. Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi Obama, all became millionaires selling licenses to China. Trump is honest, working to bring all the jobs back to Make in America. Now we know why the Democrats are using every weapon to remove him from office before 2020. I have been to China, everything sold are copies of US.patent.

Cheap goods dont do you much good when you dont have a job. This is a systemic problem where there will be some pain to cure the disease, but the cost of not curing it means death. No empire that loses its manufacturing base has ever survived very long. Service economies just dont hold up against actually building things.
@YamiPheonix531
@YamiPheonix531 5 лет назад
Trump’s tariffs on trade will only work if the USA has a domestic manufacturing sector as big as China’s and have domestic resources as abundant as Europe, North America, and East Asia combined. Because the USA is so dependent on importing foreign resources and technology that Trump’s tariffs will make it harder and more expensive for Americans to support their nation’s sustainability. I know Trump wants to help the domestic economy and national job market (so I support his motives) but imposing tariffs on trade when the USA is not fit to be self-sustaining is national suicide, especially considering the manufacturing muscle and remaining resources that the USA possesses. I know the USA has a lot of manufacturing potential but American labour is too expensive and the USA does not possess all the resources that the world offers to be self-dependent. Neodymium is a rare earth metal that is mined in East Asia so if Trump put tariffs on everything imported into the USA making them unattainable then it will have to mine its own rare earth metals...but only if it had any.

You are right in what you say. Yes, the state has not educated our children for a very long time, in fact, I remember one of my teachers saying If you can't spell or do arithmetic you won't get a job. The whole education in that day was about working for someone else. Secondly, there are no lessons given in the Constitution, no mention of People Rights, or the Coronation Oath. Since then all rights of the people have been hidden, some parts of citizens rights were changed around 2010 by David Cameron, stating that parliament was the final arbitrator Which is Ilegal for the British people are. SO all of us have been sleepwalking for at least sixty years, while our Parlament has been trying to steal away our rights that have been earned by our forefathers.

Good idea, but not a reality. We already have trade balance every within the US. That's what Trump wants for the rest of the world. That's not hard to understand. Intuitively, it seems we should trade with ourselves but we limit the economic value of sending our goods to others. That's one of the goals for these talks. I haven't looked recently, and your question is a good one. What is the opportunity to increase our production for goods sold to other countries? What I mean is, a country that stops our companies from selling to it our goods changed their rules and allowed a US company to sell our goods in their country how much would that increase US employment, growth? Does someone have a good source for "trade imbalance" that would increase US production of goods in real terms?

When you put tariffs on imports it simply means the American public are lumbered with paying the extra percentage on those goods and I'm wondering if the American public is actually aware that they are being made forcibly out-of-pocket by a considerable amount when Donald Trump talks about tariffs. You might as well be calling it extra taxes on your goods my good American people and guess where the extra money goes.

That and essentially tax US Corporations that import goods from overseas partners and add that money to the Government. In other parts of the world, they call that process BRIBERY. And last time I looked, the world suffers too much from Bribery because it adds to the actual cost of doing business without adding any VALUE> If only he could place Tariffs on the Illicit drugs and Humans trafficked. That would be Billions of Dollars More. Didn't Trumps' family own a brothel in Alaska a generation or two ago? Oh that's right, it was a boarding house. Tomato/Tomahto. But the countries that are shipping products to the US do not pay the Tariffs. The US Importers do and they are paying the Tariff Tax. In return, we the people of the US are paying higher prices because of the Tariffs. I believe that Trump is trying to supplement the Treasury with extra cash because of his 2017 Tax cut for the Rich. The monies taken in by the 2018 income taxes is almost equal to the 2017 tax cut for the rich which has left the Treasury with a lack of funds.
