I think skiing is easier to learn but harder to progress. Snowboarding is harder to learn but once you have the basics down, progression is fast.

As a 30 year veteran of both snow sports the answer is pretty much that learning to ski at a base level is easier but mastering skiing is nigh impossible. Snowboarding is terrible to get into, you’ll be sore for weeks from smacking your face into the snow, but once you get a base level of proficiency you can excel fairly quickly thereafter. It’s like an exponential vs logarithmic learning curve. They’re both hard, but at different points in the journey.

@RyanAlexanderBloom

@@ryanodonnell6184 I’ve never seen anyone learn to snowboard in less than about a week. When I started I was already an advanced skier and I had done some surfing and I too thought that it would translate well. It did not. I recently taught a friend to snowboard and she was obsessively athletic and very coordinated. It took her about 4 days to make it down the bunny hill without crashing... some of the time. Not consistently.

So this is from my personal experience. I went skiing and snowboarding for the first time, and spent 2 hours on both of them. And surprisingly I found snowboarding easier then skiing. I think it’s just personal preference, I find the fact that your legs on a snowboard are fixed into one place much more easier then having the two legs seperated . So I’m going to stick with snowboarding. It just comes down to what you prefer. Try both and then decide which one is better for you.

I’m similar to you in that I ski’d first when I was 8 and then converted to snowboarding in middle school. I’m now 22 years old and I am mainly a snowboarder but every once in a blue moon I’ll put on my skis. I think you made very good points. I don’t understand the whole “easier to learn hard to master” thing, and why it’s so well accepted because in my personal experience, I learned all the basics for skiing the first day. You have way more control when you’re facing forward going down the slope. I skateboarded before I did either snow sport and I still remember how much hell I endured to get the hang of snowboarding. I think both are equally hard to master but snowboarding puts much more emphasis on balance and skiing puts more emphasis on control and speed. In terms of tricks, snowboarding is way easier in my opinion, I’ve only been able to successfully grind a rail on skis a hand full of times, and the other times...well you can imagine how I ended up 😂

From a beginning stand point. Only ( I instruct adaptive snowboarding and also skiing) Learning to ski you start with a control wedge to control your speed. (pizza) Then you use the wedge to control turns. End day one, Day 2 learn to incorporate the wedge turn and start bringing your skies together then back to the wedge to initiate turns. Day 3 forget everything you learned on day 1 and 2 and start skiing correctly. Has anybody ever seen an Olympic skier using a wedge or Pizza NO. Snowboarding day one, no safety wedge, learn correct technique from the very beginning. By day three typically on average your beginner can turn left and right on strong foot and do a sliding stop on either heel or toe edge. They are ready for green runs maybe blue depending on skill. Skier day 4 or 5 maybe by this point they are doing parallel turns, using slides and turns to control speed. Snowboarder is already learning this on day 2 or 3. Yes, snowboarders fall more initially, no doubt, but in the big picture I believe if you stick with it you'll get there faster with a snowboard.

depends on what you wanna do. riding on snow a couple of times each season? skiing. having fun in the park and be young and be cool? snowboarding. needing speed and exploring the whole mountain? skiing again. Very top skier can match mediocre snowboarder in the park, while very top snowboarder can carve as smooth and elegant as mediocre skiers.

The part about learning how to go down a blue square in one year was very accurate. I have been snowboarding for four years and have not gone down a black diamond yet, mostly because I hurts reaaaaaal bad when you catch a tip and eat it, which i have a lot. I am a lot like you (with the switch in middle school). Plus my Dad skis every year for the past thirty so he would be good at teaching me how. When you’re young, dumb, and have a fresh, limber body, you’re not worried about how hard it is, unless you’re different and a deep thinker and trying to overanalyze it. I wish I knew what it was like to ski or snowboard as a young person! I was 41 when I started to ski in 2009 and it was 2012 before I left green runs and I’ve been on blues every since and an occasional black diamond. My dumbass teenage son was a snowboarder at the same time and did double blacks in less than 2 years! I think snowboarding looks hard being a 50 year old geezer. I can’t afford to fall on my butt if I mess up and having both feet strapped down looks pretty confining

Little bit about me I love snowboarding but I don't think you could call me a snowboarder. I was a very athletic kid and new I would be able to pick up boarding so at age 18 I went out and bought all my gear before I ever even tried it. Went maybe 4 - 6 times over a few year period at a park here in cornfield land Indiana and was like its awesome but I couldn't find anyone to go with so I stopped going. Until about 9 years later I met an older man at work one day who said he was a skier. We talked and long story short he asked if I would want to plan a 10 trip to Salt Lake city, Sun Valley, ID and Jackson Hole WY. I couldn't pass this up. Mind you I told this man about my limited handful of experiences. First ever time being out west in powder, no warm up. He takes me up the Gondola sign says experts only beyond this point. Hey I'm a beginner I say. OH you will be fine he says. To the very top we go with a 13 year old under sized board for my weight now in fresh powder. I strap in and fall over and over "Pleasant but embarrassing falls" not being able to move 20 yards before I realize I need speed that I'm not in Indiana on ice they call snow trails. Here I go first ever time really snowboarding and its a Double Diamond. I learned how to snowboard like my life depended on it that day. So if your reading this and your athletic find you some powder and you will enjoy every fall out there. I've been once since that trip and now I'm 39 years old planning on another tip out west find myself wondering should I switch to skiing hope I can still depend on my athleticism. Enjoy your life fellas.

It is a natural link to ride sideway as I am a skateboarder.

I’ve been skiing all my life and I am completely shameless when I say snowboarding is harder. I can’t control where I’m going and you can wipeout easily

skiing is much easier for me. I love to wakeboard and skateboard but I also can skate and water ski well. the first time I went skiing I was already parallel skiing and around the 3rd time I went snowboarding I was carving. when I was a beginner skier I had the odd fall, but when I was a beginner snowboarder I fell all of the time and the falls were harsher and hurt more than skiing.

I'd say that it depends on the person since i started with skiing and it took me a long time to learn but when i switch to snowboarding i could do blue runs within a season ( a season for me is generaly 10 to 15 days where i snowboard due to my schedule)

I’m on my first year of snowboarding without skiing background I can do a 180 grab off a small jump I can also do rails it’s slot easier because if you hit them with speed they are super easy because you do t have to balance much

Peak n peak! Edit: The only thing easier in snowboarding is boxes and rails. Jumps, learning and just going down are way easier on skis.

I tried skiing once and didn’t enjoy it and I started boarding last season and probably only went a total of 10 times and by the end of the season I could carve fairly well and was hitting small jumps and rails so I personally think that boarding is easier for me

I started snowboarding last year after no experience and went down a black diamond that same day (admittedly i kind of slid down it on my butt, but it's a start!)

Day 1 to 3 skiing is easier. Everything after that skiing is way harder. Becoming an expert snowboarder takes a couple weeks. Skiing takes years.

My parents put me on skies when I was 3, my ankles can’t handle the boots so I want to try snowboarding. But I’ve skied for 19 years and I’m trying to figure out how hard it is to go from skiing to snowboarding

park on a board is easier but if your going down just a normal hill skiing is easier

Skiing is easier as a beginner but harder to master, thats just going off my analysis of both sports techniques at the expert level and surf but dont snowboard.

Skiing you at least have more control with your legs, and can make more sudden decisions. I never snowboarded before, but I have to assume that's the case.

uuu snow boarding, but you should compare ski tricks with snow boarding and I'm only talking about Grinding!! Lol i think when people realize they won't be as good enough as a skier and see all these guys grinding and not them, they make a switch to snow boarding so they can feel better about themselves while showing off!! XD. That's my theory...

Right on I started skiing at 3 and my parents let me switch to boarding at 7 and I have been snowboarding ever since and now I can hit boxes and rails and the big jump line I’m eleven and I’m so glad my parents made me ski first so I could get a feel for the snow
