Dr. Natalie Butcher is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Teesside University.
Her primary research involves investigating factors that influence our ability to recognise the faces of others, particularly the importance of facial motion information and race of the face. She is also interested in how these factors influence the recognition ability of people with developmental prosopagnosia (AKA ‘face blindness’).
Natalie obtained both her PhD (2009) and her BSc (hons) Psychology (2006) from the University of Manchester, she is a committee member of the British Psychological Society’s Cognitive Psychology Section and has both national and international research collaborators.

Fascinating, but her facial recognition test was horrible at 10:15. In a realistic situation, like a crime investigation where one would have to recognize the perpetrator, a person would likely be traumatized by the crime, so in many cases, the victim would likely recognize the face. There's evidence to the contrary, but Dr. Butcher should have alerted the audience from the beginning that they would have had to recognize one of the faces shown. The slide show, from the viewer perspective, is way too small, in addition. I wish this talk were more interactive. Graphs are lifeless. Dr. Butcher could have had the audience see three (or five or 10) unfamiliar faces for 3 seconds, then test them right there on the spot. That would have made for great audience participation. Intriguing talk.
