What's In A Name? BMW R Nine T Urban GS Extended Ride Review Motovlog

The BMW R nine T is considered by many as a half-hearted response to the Neo-Heritage Style, championed by Triumph Motorcycles, in their effort to become a premium brand.
It is funny to think of BMW as having to play catch-up.
The R nine T's early adoption by the trend-set, new custom bike industry, alienated stalwart BMW supporters and older experienced riders.
Perhaps with the shock of the new custom scene wearing off, coupled with BMW's continued commitment to the line, the time is ripe to look at the R nine T objectively.
The Urban GS is getting a lot of flack from the GS Cult. Is it a cheap marketing stunt to capitalize on the success of the All-Mighty GS, or is it a legitimate/authentic GS model?

I've seen quite a few reviews of the UGS and, now that I have one, I have to say your assessment is the most accurate and complete of the lot. What I can't understand, given the number of bikes you've reviewed that I've searched RU-vid for, is why I haven't found your channel before. Glad I have now.

I’m picking up the scrambler version of this at the weekend 😀 I had a test ride of the urban GS and it’s what made me sell my XSR900 for one!

Test rode one twice ... Didn't want to give it back either time ... So I bought one ... Absolutely love it ... My UGS will be with me for as long as I can swing a leg over it ... It's just miles of smiles :)

Interesting to me (an old guy) to hear the comments about this not being a "GS." It's a "GS" not because it uses an R12GS engine, it's a GS because it pays homage to the very 1st G/S -- the original 1980 R80G/S that had the same paint scheme, including the orange seat. Put another way, without the bike the urban GS is channeling, which by itself established a whole new market category, there would be no current GS as we know it. Guess you had to be there (like us old guys ;) to instantly see what the R9T urban GS is.

the rear is 170 not 180. And it's 3 cms higher than the Scrambler and 6cms than the standard RnineT version.

Great review Dick, I’m lucky enough to have one! Took it around Normandy this summer and it was sublime, throwing it into the bends on the back roads or covering distance on the motorway it performs beautifully. I’m not concerned what people think of it, as these things are subjective. I’m chuffed with mine and intend enjoying it for a long time to come. Great review.

DW: "I'm in foreign lands." Me: "I know those roads like the back of my hand." Even though I haven't lived in south Buckinghamshire for 13 years, I recognise Marlow, Marlow Common, Fingest, Loudwater, A40 to Beaconsfield, et al. At 8.31 on the right is my old school - SIr William Borlase Grammar. A trip down memory lane, literally, for me. Nice review BTW.

Excellent review! Loved your enthusiasm and the fun you were having! The camera was a little low so I couldn't see the road in front of you over the wind screen so I didn't get the usual feel of the ride like it was me riding. But still, one of your best reviews. Thanks.

Brian White Thanks for the comment. Tricky with he camera mount. The slight lean makes flipping it too high and the standard position too low. The sportier the bike the harder it is to lock in a good “thirds” composition. Thanks for watching anyway.

Sounds like we have the same opinion of the Urban GS Dick. Ive been lucky enough to lead some demonstration rides for KTM, Triumph, Suzuki and BMW along some of the most interesting and varied roadways and my personal favourite bike of choice was always the BMW Urban GS even when given the option of choosing anything for the day. If I could part with the cash, I don't think I'd buy any other bike at any price range. It's such a great blend of fun, comfort, ease of use and performance. Its a brilliant back road scratcher and with a reasonable rider will rail around corners and stay with just about anything. Stable, fast, immensely fun and wild when you want it to be (it pops some great wheelies:) but equally adept at walking pace, superbly smooth, excellent fuelling throughout the rev range. Beautiful to use on a relaxing cruise or commute through town. I never got to use it on an extended tour on the highway but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't do that comfortably either. A taller screen perhaps (easy fix). My only gripe with it are the horizontally opposed cylinder heads that can limit you squeezing through very narrow gaps. I was so tempted a while back that I measured this and found it won't fit through my tight front gate! :( I've often thought of knocking the brick work down LOL.

Ok, just my opinion but I think your road footage would be much improved if your camera is a lot higher. I watched your Honda CB500X and Royal Enfield Classic videos again. I can see the road somewhat on the Classic because there's only two small dials blocking my view. But when there's an LCD screen, wind screen or fairly I can't see the road ahead and I feel less like I'm riding the bike and only seeing what's to the left and right of me. Watched some other people's reviews where I could see 100 yards out and it made for a much better viewing, ride-like experience. Again, love your videos and didn't notice this until today.

you could go From London to Sydney on that bike, like they did on the original /5 and the original GS. Both have a better offroad capability than the big adventure bikes if they are as good off road as the originals, which were essentially road bikes, but light weight, large tank ( or not ). Brilliant

Great ride and review Dick, really enjoyed those roads on the Urban GS. I've gone from sports bikes..( licence worries/speed fines) to big singles and have an xt660z Tenere and an XR650R Honda. I love those bikes and can never part with them...but....the Urban GS is fabulous!! And the Royal Enfield interceptor is surprisingly good....And the Triumph scrambler...and hopefully the new Tenere/ T7!! I test rode the Urban GS a while ago and I loved it and am constantly trying to justify a third bike! So many great bikes to choose from Dick....what to do!! Cheers, Steve

Where are you btw? What about the R9T Pure? So which of the bikes you have ridden would you buy with your own money regardless of what type of riding? Was the on off throttle transition smooth...I rode one of the R9Ts a while back and the on off was a little jerky or snatchy. Which GS do you have and is it’s throttle snatchy? So the suspension was smooth on this bike over these bumpy roads? Is this bikes suspension better than your GS?
@DickWhistles
@DickWhistles 5 лет назад
dry509 all good questions. I am seeing a video to answer these. I often think about this as I am always in the market for the next bike. I’d say the RnineT has been on the short list while others have risen and fallen over time. The RnineT is a different animal to my GS. I have a online Twin GS (engine made by Aprilia). It is a very usable bike with no character. Bike is jittery between second and third gears. Throttle not snatchy.
