Several weeks ago Savage Merchandising released a new product: canvas pouch sets repurposed from leftover apron material. We were curious how Adam was using them himself for travel, and so we asked him to show us ... and you. How would you organize YOUR set?

As a bowler for 30 years, I INSTANTLY recognized the New Skin bottle! Bowlers use it for callouses and blisters on their fingers, mostly the thumb. That smell brings back so many amazing memories, growing up in and around bowling alleys. I can smell it just thinking about it. ^_^

In case you're curious, Dopp kit comes from their inventor Charles Doppelt: A German leathersmith who immigrated to the US in the early 20th century, and invented the leather toiletry bag in 1919. Dopp kit is a registered term for a toiletry kit.
@harbl99
@harbl99 11 месяцев назад
Very surprised it's not a backformation from the Hindi word 'dhobi' (washing/cleaning) still used in the RN and British army. Dhobi kit = toiletries. Dhobi dust = detergent powder. Huh, learned something new today.

No. 1 is my IFAK. I never go anywhere without a first aid kit. I won't list all the contents, but as a first aid instructor, mine is pretty extensive. No. 2 is my toiletries. For obvious reasons. No. 3 is my electronics. Cables, wall warts, USB drives, spare batteries, laser pointers, flashlight et al. No. 4 is my stationery. Notebooks, pens, pencils, business cards, that sort of thing. No. 5 is what I call mission-specific, but most people would call "junk." If I'm going on a work trip, ID badges and swipe cards go here. A tiny folding screwdriver kit, glasses repair kit, spare face mask, emergency cash. If I'm flying, this also holds my pocket knife. Anything I'm travelling with that I will only need for this one trip.

While I do not have your very nice bags, I have been using similar bags for the last 45 years. They started out being a few Shure Microphone bags holding tools and audio adapters. When I started traveling a lot in my career I needed more so I bought vinyl bank money pouches. Very inexpensive. I like them because I can put light colored gaff tape on the side and label them. Like you I have bags for cables, tools, pens, etc. Now that I am focused on video, I have bags for camera supplies, lav supplies, small grip hardware. I do not use one for toiletries (dopkit). Instead I use an audio cassette bag because it has a top flap that folds back exposing what is inside. That way I rarely have to dump it out to find things. Great video!

I have not travelled since I got them other than to work. I ride a commuter rail train in so my absolute no 1 is power. No 1 power: It not only has adapters and cables it has the largest juice box you can legally take on a plane. The trains don’t always have outlets and if they do they don’t always work. The phone acts as a hotspot so that’s a pretty big drain on it. No2 has noise cancelling headphones and another case inside for my backup fountain pens. My semi dopkit is a savage industries grey small pouch I’ve had for a while. Tic tacs, masks, advil, floss etc. After watching this video I’m going to do a comforts of home. Such a great idea. I have a titanium spork. Love the idea of sugar and salts. Thank you so much for producing these pouches. Amazing.

I learned about using Ziploc freezer bags in the Boy Scouts WAY back in the 1970's and 80's. I then continued the practice during my time in the National Guard, ending up the only person with dry socks, underwear and toilet paper on a rainy weekend. If I'm going to be in or near water, I will put my wallet and phone in a quart freezer bag to keep them dry.

Great video, Adam! I had to smile at your comment about carrying around file cards. I’ve been doing that for 30 years as an engineer. Also, what might be of interest is that I will cut manila file folders, which I am no longer using, to include the fold, making the cuts the same size as a file card. This gives me four sides to write on, opens like a book so to speak, and will fit in my shirt pocket.

Not so much using the stuff you have made but the advice you have given has reinforced things other people have suggested. For example in a recent video you mentioned that part of your process is to break down large tasks into smaller tasks. Others in my life have been suggesting this for years but it hasn't quite sunk in until now with someone I respect (you) also suggesting it. So thank you for that. Now I find myself thinking more often that if a task or goal seems unsurmountable, break it into smaller steps and go from there.

I have an equivalent but I use Ikea small roll up dry bags. But they have numbers on them - No 1 is toiletries - toothbrush and paste, deodorant, Lush shampoo bar in a tin (because you can also use it as soap and at a pinch even wash clothing with it), medication (prescription), foam ear plugs, torch and a little silicone leaf cup (so I've always got something to drink out of to take my meds). Also keep a metal portable travel hotel door lock in there as well - No 2 is my "emergency" kit - First aid kit (plasters (fabric, blister and blue catering ones), painkillers, indigestion tablets, alcohol wipes, roller bandage, triangular bandage, scissors, safety pins and tweezers). Plus sunblock in an applicator (Solar Buddies are the bomb!), a couple packs of pocket tissues, Kendal Mint Cake (I have a friend who suffers from non diabetic hypoglycaemia and mint cake is pure sugar), a couple of those single use plastic rain ponchos and some chemical hand warmers. Even though I'm a guy I also keep some sanitary pads in there. Not only in case someone is caught out, but also you can use them to mop up spills, soak in water and freeze for use as an emergency ice pack or eye mask or even as extra absorbent stuff for first aid. Once even gave one to someone who's high heels were rubbing after a night out as extra padding in her shoes. Also some ziplock bags to be able to seal stuff up if there's no-where to dispose of things where you are. First aid kit and ziplocks are in their own smaller bag so I can pack just that if I need to. - No 3 is what my goddaughter dubbed the "yummy bag" - Tabasco sauce, a small tin of leaf tea, a silicone tea strainer, and individual Kikkoman soy sauce sachets. - 4 is my "bits" bag - phone charger, multi bit stubby screwdriver (Rolson), more ear plugs, spare roll up water bottle, zip ties, notebook, sharpie, retractable pencil, yellow gaffers tape (works as well as regular plus it's visible!!!), folding rucksack (Onya), spare cheapo headphones, spare torch, spare batteries, and a travel sewing kit

In the kitchen I have only the coarse salt. It does work for me 95% of times, and when I need a finer grain, I use mortar. Mortar is my No.2 tool after a knife. I like all my spices freshly ground. And for oily spices I do grind them with some salt, so the salt collects the oils.

100% on those index cards. I've tried various "note apps" on the phone, but it just doesn't click with my brain properly. There's something about the freedom and tactileness of implement on stiff paper that feels right. Plus I'm as old as you are, and might be a wee bit set in my ways.

I use mostly plastic zip bags. My charger kit for travelling always stay in the overnight bag even at home, no exceptions. A very thin 5m euro-euro extension cord, a 2 USB-C+2 USB-A 100W charger and different very thin 2 meter USB cables for my devices. Never met a hotelroom or airbnb yet that has defeated me and left me unable to charge next to the bed. Always a full roll of toilet paper in a ziploc bag squished as flat as can be. That one has saved me a few times. A compact very well equipped first aid kit bag. Toiletries and medications in their own small bags. A multi tool. Overnight bag is a quite old Billingham 335 camera bag, maybe late 90s.

A few other calls for color-coding (via zipper). Different color webbing loops at the corners would be a good option that maintains the blue zipper. (maybe even just one corner, so you can also know which end to find the zipper pull to open/close it.) Another idea might be to add a divider/inside pocket in two or three of the set. Keep index cards away from the pens for example.

I use bags similar to that for my toolbox. I have a screwdriver bag, a metric wrench bag, standard wrench bag, socket and driver bag, and then misc tools bag. And then all the meters and other electrical test instrumentation. This is essential if you travel with tools. Because it enables you to FIND the tool you need. I'd carry more, but the bags actually add weight and bulk, so i can only justify so many. Silly box weighs 57 lbs now, i really need to lose some weight. Unfortunately titanium hand tools are stupid expensive.

I do the same thing - I always have a small notepad and a pen or pencil with me, especailly when I'm working or traveling, because (as a photographer) I may want to make notes about a particular location or shot, but also to jot down other ideas because there have been times when something inspired me to want to create something else, but if I don't write it down or make a verbal recording of the idea, I'll forget and it will bother me later when I can't remember. I also take this a step further and carry a small inexpensive voice recorder (I could use my phone, but I like the voice recorder better) to make verbal notes especailly if there is a lot of into to take down, so I can listen to it later (the reason I like the voice recorder is also for lectures; I can leave it running, whereas a phone might time out or whatever during a lecture, so it's nice to have a way to make notes in written form, and also verbal form, and then if I need a video note, I can just use my phone if needed, but mostly use audio and written notes). So I'd say if you're a creative, having a notepad (can be small, or even note cards) and a pen/pencil (or assortment) is very important. The sound recorder can just be extra, as some people may not need them, but I would consider note cards/pad a necessity.

Scrolled through the comments to see if anyone had requested the plans to these like the other plans available from savage industries and not seen it. I’m another U.K. viewer and whilst I’d happily buy a set the cost will double easily by the time shipping is added and the tax man here takes a pound of flesh! I know they are fairly simple as a make but I really like the little end tabs and the size of these seem great as little pockets like these often don’t swallow what these appear to as that dopp kit was filled with way more than I expected 😂

I don't have a set of matching/numbered pouches, but I have long traveled with a set of mismatched pouches I have picked up/made over the years that by and large follow a very similar organization scheme. The only one I don't regularly have is a "miscellaneous" pouch, which is not something I had considered and may now adopt, as it actually solves a few minor annoyances with my current system quite tidily.

Have you thought of using a large carabiner through the loops of all five so you can handle the entire set at once? I get small see through plastic mesh bags from Daiso and synch them in my bag with a carabiner.

I am intrigued about these. I recently discovered that sound tools has some pouches that are similar and I have started going down the pouch route. It's hard to find things that are small yet to keep things organized. I have two sets so far. Red is used for cameras, I have two mevos so far and all cables and accessories and a clamp are in there and it fits the camera in its case really nicely. I have another pouch for what I'm calling receivers it's about 5 FM radios that I can hand out if somebody wants to listen to something I'm working on Poor man's IFB. I have another one thats set up with a bunch of things and cables for something I need to test and do a video about which I haven't gotten to but also cables that I might have to rummage through. And I have another one that's got some microphone adapters. I found out the canvas that thay use lens itself really well to be marked with that white marking pen so I have them numbered. these will definitely be considered next time I'm looking for pouches they look like they might be a heavier duty and they're already numbered.

I love a rock flake salt we have. It makes such a difference. And way tastier than other salts. It's got a sweetness to it. I've never thought about bringing it with me however. Until now 🧂🧂

Being a fixer/maker I always feel undressed without some basic tools. Micro screwdrivers, pvc tape and self amalgamation tape, 4 and 6 inch adjustable open end, multiple screwdrivers which also double as nut drivers, 16 and 24 gage stranded wire, Leatherman super tool, extra needle nose pliers, eyeglass screw kit, cheap multi-meter, folding utility knife, and side cutters. Pen pencil bag was made from an old suede jacket.

I’m surprised you don’t have a “tool kit” pouch. I travel a lot and like to tinker/ fix/ make and have a kit with my Swisschamp, HOTO precision screwdriver, Knipex pliers, a pair of Olfa scissors I love, snap knife, 6” straight edge, and a few more odds and ends.

Hi Adam! Nonsequitur, but have you checked out Gamblin's Reclaimed Earth paints? They clean up water polluted with iron released from mines, and use that iron to make pigments! Where are you going to get a better rust colour than, y'know... rust?

While traveling I would use ziplock bags but definitely similar arrangements. Hygiene, medical, electronics and utility items that I will call it that weren't in a ziplock, but in a more secured device for safety.

I like clear plastic pencil cases for the same thing (you can see the contents at a glance) but next time one needs replacing i'll likely be moving away from plastic (because, y'know, planet). (for camping especially I use one as a mini "possibles" bag with needle and thread, duct tape, cordage, superglue, plasters etc. in case either my gear or my person need repairs)

Freezer zip gallon bags work well for this. Light and no need to search for what number has which things. Its clear and immediate. One has “toiletries” with teeth stuff in a separate smaller bag than hair stuff. Meds have a smaller bag too. Like subfolders on your hard drive. These can last many trips before needing to be replaced because its not that harsh a use

Yep. I do this too. Keeping my shampoo bottle isolated from my toothbrush was the first major reason I did it, but I have found it so helpful for everything small. And I only travel once or twice a year, so I have been using the same bag for some of them for 10 years without noticeable degradation.
