Nice one, James. I think that you should call your Camera Bag "Tardis". Just a word of advice about cables and the equipment they go into - I unplug all cables because it (1) puts more strain on them if they are connected to a piece of equipment and both are moving around inside your Camera Bag, and (2) it is possible to not only damage the cable by placing more strain on it, but it is also possible to snap a 3.5mm plug at the point that it enters (in your case) your Zoom. Lots of trouble if that happens because then you will have the fiddly job of getting the broken off piece of metal from the 3.5mm plug out of its nice, snug home in the Zoom.

You should switch from the Rode Videomic Pro to the Pro+. That microphone turns on when you turn your camera on and off when you turn the camera off.

The side zip on the back pack is for when you want to take your camera / lenses out but not actually remove the back back from your back. So you simply sling it over one shoulder, pull it a little bit forward, and you can access your cameras without actually removing your backpack from your back. It especially works well in a scenario where you can't put your backpack on the ground, like when it's very wet and muddy, or there is a lot of people around and a lot of feet wizzing past like a wedding.

Oh I see! Apologies, I have watched most of your videos in the past (always informative in a fun way!), must have missed that one somehow. But try making the straps / slings a bit longer than you are used to. That allows for more breathing room. Also swing the bag all the way around, so that it's almost on your chest, and then keep it there with the same hand that the sling / strap is attached to, so it basically twists the strap quite a bit. That works for me anyway, but I am quite a tall guy, so my arms are a bit longer than normal, so not sure if that's maybe why it works for me :-)

I don't know if it was James or someone else who said it, but about the fact that the flap basically opens towards the wrong side as well... - When I saw that, I had to agree. - I think it was a review by someone else, but they showed more things kinda wrong with it. - James might not necessarily agree to those points, but I was surprised by how strange some design-decisions were for such an expensive bag indeed.

Would recommend the Olympus TG-5 Tough as a backup compact: it’s basically indestructible, it has decent 4k video and good high frame rate video, and it shoots RAW stills

Ben Downey I have the tg4 and It's great. The only con is trying to use aperture priority mode. It's weird so I just use program mode and that works well. Overall I give the camera a 4 out 5 rating. PS: I also use it to get GPS data and avoid using GPS on my main working cameras. In short a very nice little back-up camera.

Suggestion: mosquito repellent. They're drawn to sweat, so they're really a pain on hot days. I apply to all exposed skin (except around the eyes) and also spray on my back. Then reapply every couple of hours. Off Deep Woods is my preference; use the equivalent extra-strength repellent available wherever you are.

Good tip to turn the camera off when blowing the sensor. In addition, turn it so that the sensor faces down - this way dust can fall out of the camera (this is a tip often given by camera manufacturers). That said - I never had a problem with sensor dust on my Olympus MFT cameras …

About your 9V batteries... put a piece of electrical tape over the exposed terminals on each battery. You do NOT want them to come into contact with each other or something that conducts electricity... even such a small battery shorting out might cause a fire. And you don't want your backpack on fire, because it's next to... well, your back. 😊
@fabienb

On the Peak Design backpack, what annoys me a lot is actually the laptop sleeve because it is way way way too tight. But I'd say it's so well balanced (even thought it's a heavy bag even when empty) that I would get over any issue I have with it :)
@michaelangeloh.5383
@michaelangeloh.5383 6 лет назад
As for the batteries; Isn't there a good solution that allows you to charge with small solar-panels by now?... If I were hiking/traveling for long periods, I'd probably find something like that instead of loads of batteries. Cause there's bound to be some kind of powerbank-esque solar solution that allows you to connect all kinds of devices and batteries.

Nice video dude, pretty interesting seeing what other togs have in their bags. One little tip for you a lens on a crop sensor camera is multiplied for example a 50mm lens is 50mm on a full frame but effectively a 75mm lens on a 1.5 crop camera.

Question. Are prime lenses generally more durable than zooms (storage/back packing, not drops) or is it just an individual lens quality issue? EG: in the backpack or strapped to backpack strap for hiking as a long second lens. I use a PD clip for my camera with a 16-50 mounted and currently have a 50-230 that I almost never actually use so am concerned about it being banged around and what not. Wondering if a prime would be lens prone to damage. Maybe carry a 90 or 135 prime instead.

Hey, Tips for a small compact camera that take great photo ok ideo and don't cost your arms : sony RX100 yes the one you mentioned but older ones. The last version is 1500, i agree, too pricey. But you can find the MK3 new for 1/3 of that price. Is it as good as the last one ? No. Is it good enought for 99% of situation ? Yes. And it's 1/3 the price so buy 3 and if it brakes hey you still got 2 ... Older than MK3 can be found new for even chiper but no flipscreen so not good for vloging. If it's only for still though the MK1 is probably the most bang for the buck of any camera ever !!!! Just my 2cts....

@Artyomthewalrus 6 лет назад
Question. Have you tried attaching one end of the camera strap to the tripod mount when not carrying a backpack? I find it's soooo much more comfortable, especially when hiking as it doesn't bounce around like at all. That's the one reason why I love peak design.

No prob. Do you use a tele zoom with your G9? I fancy the Leica 50-200 but it's out of my budget atm. I have a Canon EF 70-200 2.8 which I could get a convertor for but that defeats the object of a lighter system a bit!

For filters, ever thought of using Cokin-P Series (or clone)? You'd only need one holder and just screw in the right mounting ring on each lens - Wouldn't need to buy new filters if you buy a lens with a different size thread... Also, love how the road looks like a meandering river!

5:10 What do you think of a holster-type bag, though?... I've always used those for cameras. so that I have it in a small bag with a strap and some accessories, and I can also grab it rather quickly. - I ám interested in that strap-mount for when I do bring a backpack, though. But at the same time I wonder how stable and comfortable that is. - I do use old film-cameras, by the way, so there might be more weight(?). - But I like the idea of it.

I'd probably score it about 7 as well so far, but I'll see how it goes on the hike. I don't find the straps all that comfy and the side bits open inwards if you do the sling-round-the-front thing. I'm using a peak design messenger 13 a lot and it's my favourite bag of all and I have quite a collection. It's a tough bag that I use everyday and I over pack it all the time and it's really water proof. The quick release is very good for m43 (except my long telephoto setup) but with my k1 it's just not solid enough. The k1 with either the 24-70mm or the 70-200mm is just too heavy for a single point mount like that. Overall I can't say anything bad from peak design products and they manage to make them looking good contrary to my fugly billingham. When they released the kickstarter I was dubious about their bags and I had to try one with a 10 day return policy to really get a good idea of the product quality. My typical carry with that bag is a om-1 mkII, mc-14, 40-150mm f2.8, 25mm f1.4, 15mm f1.7, 300mm F4 pro and a macbook 13". All this fit in a messenger 13". The next purchase will be the same model you have in the 30l configuration to replace my surprisingly good amazon basic backpack.

10:50 Electrostatics / electromagnetism. Works with dust too. Regarding small camera, did you look into Olympus TG5 ? Or even older TG3 which I have? Several years old yet I still didn't find the will or reason to upgrade it for anything else. Yes, it has just 12 / 16 Mp, shoots video in 1080p only, but you can play football with it, and it's completely UNDERWATER camera, given you keep gaskets clean with that blower you already have :D I love your vids. My question for you dude is... How can you sell your prints/do projects for companies that involve/that were shot with your drone. Likeee don't you need to really expensive license in the UK to make money of your drone.

Hi James! I've been following your videos ever since I bought my OMD-10 Mk II as my first step into the photography world. You've been quite helpful. In terms of lenses, do you recommend primes, or are you happy with your zooms? I think you only mentioned the 20mm 1.7, the 12-35, and 35-100 in this video. Or is it just because of the types of photos you do? Thanks!

Still packing the Manfrotto Pixi I see ^_^ (the little plastic Manfrotto tabletop/handheld tripod) With small pocketable cameras.... Have you thought about the Olympus TG-5? It might not be the best quality of sensor for video and/or stills compared to current gear, but on the flipside, it's impact resistant, and can also be used underwater. Oh, and it'll shoot RAW files too, if one wants to be able to tweak things a bunch afterwards. EDIT: I'm also curious on your thoughts of the Lecai 12-60 vs the 12-35 II ^_^

Nice, very popular suggestion :)

Also, I went 12-35 for the constant aperture. The 12-60 starts stopping down very quickly, but still a great lens!

@James Popsys Have you considered the Lumix TZ200? They're far cheaper than the Sony RX100VI with 4K and a good (albeit slow) lens: www.dpreview.com/products/panasonic/compacts/panasonic_dczs200

Hi James, I'm considering buying the same bag as you, what's your personal opinion on the quality, usability of it? Since it's like 250/280$ , your insight will be appreciated. Keep up the great job

Hey, James! I just want to say that I love your sense of humor. Most probably because mine is somewhere around that area too. LOL I just recently got my G85 and I'm so pumped with the videos I am able to get using it. Photos? I'm still trying to get my way around a few things but I can say I'm almost there. I have been a Nikon DSLR user for the most part of my photo/video "career". Like 8 years. LOL Anyway, I just want to ask if the batteries you're using for the G85 are original Panasonic batteries. If not, then what are you using? What brand and how are they performing. I'm from the Philippines and I can't seem to find 3rd party brand of batteries here. The original batts are quite a pain in the pocket but do you think they're worth the money? I'm planning to buy 2 extra batteries. Also, I have purchased online(from China, no racial something intended), those dummy batteries that make it possible for me to connect my G85 to a power bank. Have you ever used that setup? It fairly cheap around USD20 and I'm still waiting for it to arrive anyway. Just wanted to hear what your thoughts are about what I've mentioned so far. Thanks and hope to hear from you.

James Popsys that’s awesome you are one of the only photographers I follow that uses M43’s professionally. I think that’s pretty cool honestly. Everyone else goes on and on about full frame being superior, but your pictures are always awesome! Keep up the good work :)
