The long awaited gear video from yours truly, Wildland Explorer. This is my "ultralight" load-out.
Who cares about numbers anyway? I don't! Leave the number crunching and bean counting to the suits and ties in Washington!! UL is a mindset. I have frequently carried both lighter and heavier packs in times past. But this is my go-to setup for a 4 day hike in my usual conditions.
I hope it is helpful to those who have asked, and I hope you enjoy!
P.S. here's a Lighterpack for the gear covered in this video:
lighterpack.com/r/45dsi1
I know it's not "sub 10 lbs ultralight". And I'm here to tell you that that's OK.

For years I've borrowed ideas from hikers for many essential supplies, map, trail information ect.. As a trail rider I like the lite weight items and rain gear too. Also have a couple of books Hike the Gila / Aldo Leopold Wilderness. Great info for new to this area trail rider. Tells trail length, if its out & back or circle trip, elev gain, strenuous level of hike. Complete & reliable info.. Plus I can view the areas you hike as many I've never seen and @ 70+ not likely to experience. So greatly appreciate your videos. Happy Trails from Gila Wilderness area, NM

Thanks for the tip, I live in the area too (Mimbres), pushing 80! I have a friend who's done the CDT twice on a bike, north to south. (Tour Divide)

Pillow to protect the sleeping pad, and duct tape around a lighter (for when you don't bring poles). Two problems solved for me! Thanks for the tips, in addition to the awesome trip videos.

Love load out videos. I carry my poop kit on the outside of my pack for obvious reasons. Hilltop Packs makes some great quality dyneema bags to for food bags, poop kits etc. Love your content and videos.

Awesome video! When I move to AZ and do a lot more hiking, I plan to completely retool my gear, which is all late 1970s vintage. Materials and technology have changed. This is a great guide for upgrading. Thanks this incredibly helpful video!

Fozzils Snapfold Bowlz (2pc Bowl) is $9.95 on Amazon. Thanks for the gear video! I love learning what people carry in their pack, especially when it has been field tested and approved! : )

Thank for the video. I have been waiting for this. You do a great job on the hike video’s but only share a little bit of what you carry and use.👍🏻

Thank you! My current space isn't optimal for indoor recording - once I move in November it will hopefully be easier to make more videos like this in addition to the trips.

That Fossils folding cup /plate looks cool - you had me at ul cutting board! ;) I recently started packing my food tall and vertically - right up the spine - instead of horizontally and have noticed a nice difference, particularly on longer carries. An opsack helps to keep shape. Though it can be a little awkward packing other stuff around its sides and front. Looking forward to your thoughts on solar chargers. Thanks for sharing.

I like them a lot! The only downside is you have to buy the full pack of cup, bowl, plate. I only ever take the bowl. Search for fozzils.com - it's the Solo Pack you want. Glad it was helpful and thanks for watching!

I've had zero blisters even on river hikes after switching to them. Good to see other people know about this one weird hiking trick, lol.

Same. They are awesome. I prefer the liners with a thin pair of Darn Toughs or Smartwools over them in a pair of Lone Peaks.

Always fun seeing gear load out videos. What was the total weight of your 4 day load out? My buddy has the levity and can’t stand it. It’s just not as comfortable as the EXOS 58. Your thoughts?
@WildlandExplorer
@WildlandExplorer Год назад
That's funny I have had the exact opposite experience. I find my Exos to be not all that comfortable and only take it when I need to carry a load above 30 lbs. Y'know, long water carries, bear canister territory. The Levity in comparison I find to be comfy way above what Osprey recommends. I guess it goes to show how personal pack fitting is! I didn't make it obvious but I posted a link to a Lighterpack that is basically this loadout in the video description: lighterpack.com/r/45dsi1

@@WildlandExplorer gear definitely is a personal issue. Glad the levity is working for you. I think Osprey makes great gear. For heavier loads like you describe I love the EXOS 58. In the Grand Canyon we carried in a resupply and extra water and my pack was around 55lbs and the EXOS handled it beautifully. We are getting ready to do the Kings Canyon High Basin Route in 3 weeks and I needed to go lighter so I purchased the ZPacks Arc Haul Ultra 100 60L. It says good for weights up to 40lbs. My experience is the sweet spot is 25-30lbs and even though it’s a 60L it can’t hold near as much gear as the EXOS 58, nor carry a bear can as comfortably. But it is light!

Oh nice! I'm gonna be in the Sierra in a couple weeks myself over in the Desolation / Bear Lakes / Seven Gables area. 1 solo spot for Pine creek TH was literally the only permit available that allows connecting to the JMT so I just kinda made my usual "explore and figure it out" type of loop route. Hope you have a great trip out there, I've seen triplogs of the KCHBR and looks epic! The main thing I like about the Exos is being able to fit a BV500 horizontally. I'd say I agree with Osprey it's really not for much higher than 40lbs. It's starts to hurt bad at 50lbs, lol. When I was last on the JMT I marveled at the number of hikers with a bear can strapped to the top of their small 40L packs. I'm sure those packs were light AF but I prefer to have everything enclosed in the pack if possible. I think it's a side effect of hiking a lot in the upper sonoran desert srcub where everything wants to snag you. All my videos prior to Nov 2019 were filmed on an iPhone, you can do quite a lot with them, especially with a little UL tripod - that makes all the difference. Btw, I just checked out your channel and I noticed a familiar face in one or two of the thumbnails. Seems like you know some of the people I've watched in the past. Were you in that group that did the epic float/hike Grand Canyon trip with John A. & Joey C. a couple years back?

@@WildlandExplorer RU-vid is awesome for finding like minded individuals. Johnnny, Can’t Hike 55, has become a good friend and backpacking partner. Never hiked with Joey. He stood us up on last years Grand Canyon trip. RU-vid and editing malfunctions have pissed John off but I’m trying to get him to simplify and continue putting out videos. He’s got a talent for it. He just posted our JMT trip from last year. Check it out.
