I chat about what gear I take on an overnight hiking trip and how that changes when I go for up to 7 days. I show you what I take and how I save weight. This equipment is for a winter hike. I have a base weight to 6.45kg, in summer my base weight drops to 4.01kg as I can use more lightweight sleeping gear.

It is interesting looking though someone else’s pack. I have a micro torch permanently attached to the draw string of the main compartment. In the dark it easily comes to hand, often just so I can find my head torch.

Hi Kate, I am a keen camper and former hiker, until I did my knee. I'm also a friend of your brother Max, who is pretty proud of your efforts here. I also just put your RU-vid channel up on Rolling Solo Australia. An organisation for women who travel and camp solo around Australia. Iurged them to subscribe if they enjoy your stuff! Great gear advice. I apply all my old hikiing gear rules about weight to my own camping exploits thesedays. Keeps fuel costs down. I can still manage day walks but struggle with steep downhill. Enjoy!

Just getting into hiking and preparing for first weekend hike. Thanks so much for your ideas. Very useful. Packing tampons not only for emergencies but for tinder cracked me up! My biggest worry is water. I drink heaps of water and just can't fathom how I'm gonna be able to carry enough water.

Haha thanks a lot mate. Glad it’s helpful. I love planning hikes where I know there will be water near camp. It saves so much weight. I drink heaps too. The other things that I find helps is drinking a lot at each water point. Eg the car, at lunch if you find some. I always treat my water. Best of luck

One thought - dependent on terrain PLB should be worn near your chest. Learnt this trick as a ADV motorcycle rider - if you have a serious accident you're likely to be crunched up in the foetal position, or may have broken arm or collarbone - arms clenched near your chest balled up like a wailing baby screaming in agony you can still (maybe) manipulate your PLB to set it off. Sounds drastic but....
@KateGrarock
@KateGrarock 3 года назад
Totally agree. I had a mate point this out too. I now put it up the top of my pack - in the top zipper. Not quite on my chest for super easy access but yes I agree quick and easy access is best.

Thanks for going through your gear list. Always enjoy seeing other people’s setups! Good to see you have a well stocked first aid kit too. I’ve seen some hikers that seem to take the very bare minimum in first aid items which I think is not a smart area to try and save weight in. Which app do you use for your GPS maps?
@KateGrarock
@KateGrarock 3 года назад
Thanks heaps. Yes. I want to be sure if and when trouble strikes I’m not sitting in that ridge thinking about all the items I ditched because they weighed too much. I use Memory-Map but only because I payed a lot a few years back. I’m not happy with their upgrades these days. Feel like they have forgotten the Australian market. I lean towards avenza for areas I don’t have existing maps. What about you?
@FreedomOnFoot
@FreedomOnFoot 3 года назад
I've mainly been using Avenza which is good but currently looking into whether there are some other options that may be better. I'm actually doing a navigation refresher course online this weekend via Zoom which was offered for free by the Victorian Rogaining Association and the team at Bogong Equipment. Should be fun!

Oh so cool and thanks for the lovely comment. I have thought about getting into these good to know they are useful. The Lara vid is pretty basic but some great advice I got from a mate is don't rush. Some days I would get to camp at 11am but then take time to set up camp and really explore the area. I can't wait to do it again someday. My favourite camping was up high on the windy peaks and Hugh Gorge Junction (not the shelter area but up near the gorge). Happy hiking

What's the spongey tape for wrapping toes, corn things and the under tape?
@KateGrarock
@KateGrarock 3 года назад
Yep I had a really bad blister run a while back and found all of these things helped in different ways. The under tape is great as its so skinny so provides protection without bulking up the area. But I haven't had a blister in a long time so might be able to remove it.

This is a great video and so brilliant to see local content....but you lost me at ethically sourced down. There’s no ethical way to take something that doesn’t belong to you.
@KateGrarock
@KateGrarock 3 года назад
Thanks yep fair call. Perhaps it should be called non-horrifically sourced down. happy hiking
@thriftyvegan73
@thriftyvegan73 3 года назад
@@KateGrarock in reality, the whole notion of ethically sourced down is a furphy. It’s another way to suck in people who think of themselves as conscious consumers. If you actually look into so called ethical or RDS labelled down, you will quickly find that it’s pretty much impossible for companies to guarantee their supply chain and while they may be able to say the down for a particular product was not live plucked, they cannot say with any certainty what other ways that goose may have been mistreated during its life. For example, a significant proportion of geese used for so called ethical down may have been dead when their down was ‘harvested’ but during their lives were force fed to make Foie Gras. Knowledge is power and I think it’s crucial that people are aware of these issues as they are being duped by companies who bandy about these terms without any real, exacting standards of animal welfare. You might want to look into the supply chain of the companies you support with a more critical eye.
