I use the older version of that pack for my dog, it doesn't have the smaller compartments on the outside and it seems some of the chest straps might be different. She carries the same water bottles also, booties from Ruffwear, collapsible water bowls from Mountain Smith, a bandanna and a buff. I am definitely going to add the microfiber towel to her kit, seems like a really good idea. I am curious as to what you use for bug repellent for Wanda, I use a slinky style bug repellent bracelet that stretches around my dog's neck to keep the bugs off her head. The flea and tick takes care of the rest. Great vid as always and chock full of great advice and Wanda looks good and ready for some camping!
@MattyOutdoors
@MattyOutdoors 3 года назад
For bug repellant, I usually just spray some icaridin on her buff, and find that helps keep the mosquitos off of her head. They don't really go after her anywhere else, as she's quite fluffy.

Well I got nearly 10 days of food for my 70lb Malinois loaded out. Basically 2 full gallon freezer zip locks. With his cut down z rest pad he’s at 14 lbs which lil heavier than wanted but his kibble is very calorie dense at over 700 kcal per cup. What kind of bag did you use to line the saddle bags with? I don’t trust the ziplocks against holes and chafe etc so definitely want to line pack to keep food dry.
@MattyOutdoors

I use the water bladders to keep the bags equal in weight. As Gus goes through his food I can add or remove water from a specific side to even things out. Do you not carry a rescue harness for Wanda?
@MattyOutdoors
@MattyOutdoors 3 года назад
I don't carry a dedicated one no, but I've played around with the straps from my hammock suspension, and her pack, and am easily able to rig up a carry system for her, so I opt to go that route. I've carried her around quite a few times, and shes never wined or had an issue with it, so that's what we go with.

@@MattyOutdoors great idea. Interested to see how those dogs bowls work out! Gus and I have not been out since I came down with covid... better now but it took damn near 3 weeks to get over most of it. Hoping to get back on trail next week....
@MattyOutdoors
@MattyOutdoors 3 года назад
I think the Bowls will work out well. The only concern I have, is them blowing away when empty, so if I leave one out for a water bowl, may just have to put a rock in it to keep it weighed down. Sorry to hear you went through a bought of covid! We recently had it come through our house, and my fiance spent a few days in hospital.. Thankfully everything is ok now, and she's back to normal.

It was definitely pretty scary to go through.. I was stuck at home in isolation due to being one of her close contacts, so I couldn't leave my house, and she was stuck in there alone, 7.5 months pregnant. Thankfully her and baby are ok, it was a hella stressful few days

have you had the mountainsmith buckles come loose on you when your dogs gets wet? I read a bunch of reviews of people complaint that their dogs were getting all tangled up in the straps because the security buckles were constantly popping loose during water crossings.

I haven't had any issues with the clips loosening. If you were concerned, you could easily put a little wrap of electrical tape over them

@@MattyOutdoors I’ve got a golden retriever that can’t resist water so that’s why I asked. I think I’ll need to get some seat bags for the inside of the pouches for sure. I was considering the ruffwear palisades but it’s more than twice the price.

Do you carry with you one of those dog slings in case she ever got injured and you have to carry her out? I'm sure you've prepared for a situation like this but you didn't mention anything in the gear video so I figured I'd ask! If you do, which one?
@MattyOutdoors
@MattyOutdoors 3 года назад
I don't carry a dedicated sling, no. I've got a system for rigging up my hammock suspension, as well as the harness on her pack to create a carry sling, and have carried Wanda around this way plenty of times without issue. She's also a pretty manageable weight, and getting her up onto my shoulders to carry around is easy, so that's another option I could use depending on the situation

Hi, I'm so sorry for being late. But I have a Bernese Mountain Dog and after school we spend almost the whole time outside hiking and I want to start seriously once I'm old enough. So there are soo many equipments for dogs starting with booties, sweaters, raincoats etc. and I'm a bit confused about what really is necessary. I mean Bernese are made for cold weather and their coat is very thick...so ig a sweater isn't needed. But what about booties and a raincoat? I don't want to buy stuff we won't ever really need but I also want to be prepared. He's only 1.5 years old and we'll have enough time to prepare. It would be cool if someone could give me any advice. Thanks :) -Jacob
