- A 3 METER high wooden crate was delivered to me this morning, What's inside?
HAHA, I was caught by surprise actually, I thought this would arrive much later. So I had to drop my plans for the day and make this unboxing video instead. Anyway when we do unboxing videos on the WIntergatan channel, we try to really go for it. This actually arrived today, Wednesday September 12 so I shot, edited and uploaded the video on one day which delayed the upload a little bit.
MMX Update: I am working on finishing the designs in CAD, things are falling into place. It is super fun to do some CAD designing again.
Have a great day everyone, I was laughing so much today seeing all the crimes :) all best/ Martin

I know Marble Machine is filled with memories for him and us and some will complain that it is not being treated with enough respect but, personally, it feels exactly like when you wrote teenage poetry or drew your first illustration, you cringe a bit at the flaws but can't help but feel a bit proud at the effort input in it, the hopes, dreams and expectations and then the achievements. This is the most inspiring youtube unboxing I've ever seen.

This video literally made me cry ... to be reunited with the machine that started everything off for you and to end up here on WW for the MMX - 88mil views and 4yr of work (which has completely engrossed me in your work, a total convert to your music, my 8 month old daughters fave music, an avid fan and follower of every vid) the feeling I felt watching this video, if it is anywhere close to how you felt too... is so so powerful and moving its almost indescribable. Martin Molin you sir are a genius and as a fan and a fellow musician and 'amateur' engineer I salute you and Wintergatan, your project crew and friends. This is so heartwarming and moving - Proof that the planets and galaxies do align in this universe

It was indescribably awesome to see this surprise reunion, and the Marble Machine song was so perfectly adapted to the footage! Thank you for transporting me back to that fateful day when I clicked on the Marble Machine video in the news. I've re-watched it countless times since then, each time with the same sense of utter amazement. Nothing about the old machine is "amazingly stupid", everything is amazingly brilliant, and charmingly and imperfectly perfect. :)

Last weekend, my 8yo daughter and I were visiting "questicon", a science and technology museum in Australia's capital Canberra. There was a play space where you could build contraptions with rolling marbles... :-) We immediately pounced on a box of chime bars and proceeded to build a musical device (of limited capability). The curator took an interest in what we were doing and then proceeded to show us a video of a device she made with the same parts which played "twinkle twinkle..." (very well too). So then I showed her your original video! (for the win) She was unaware of it - and totally in awe. We talked for ages about the MMX and you other amazing work. I am sure you now have some new followers :-) Best wishes and enjoy the journey - the MMX is taking just as long as it needs to be finished.

We need people in the world like you. I love the bent wire, the hand cut rough plywood, the screws, tape, cardboard and reliance on and trust in gravity. It’s the white knuckled determination. The grit. The ‘at all costs’ get it done, attitude. It’s your story I show my kids when they want to give up, the story I go to when I feel I can’t make it, or when I feel I’ve run out of ideas. Thanks for your effort, documenting it so well and for sharing it with strangers like me on the other side of the world. Seeing the now old ingenious machine so close to the MMX is so powerful. We need good stories like yours in our world and I can’t wait to see how it ends...

I remember first watching this video when I was sleeping on the sofa of a relative's house. It was just a few months after losing my home, my job, nearly everything I owned, and my girlfriend who died of cancer. I was pushed to an extreme and felt trapped at a dead end. I was ready to die alone, broke, and homeless in the streets. The original marble machine video was a moment of respite from the brutality of my reality. Moments of escapism helped me with coping with stress and grief that I've never experienced in my life. Now, I'm finally moving into a new home to call my own in a week, I have a wonderful job while attending college, and I've grown stronger and wiser from the hellish year I endured. Now, at this new point in my life, I look fondly at the little things that helped me through, including this instrument you built. I'm glad to see how you've grown in your experience and workmanship with the Marble Machine X. Keep up the good work 💖💖💖

If it were not for your museum, I would have never had the opportunity to meet the Marble Machine and Martin. It was such a great honor to meet my idol in the sense of a modern musical and mechanical genius. I visited Speelklok many times after just to appreciate and fulfill the adoration I have for the original Marble Machine. Though the original Marble Machine has flaws, this has not dissuaded my appreciation in any way. MMX is a remarkably fine creation in the making but my heart will always hold a place for the original. I have never teared up during a unboxing video... it struck a heart string just as the original music video did. Though I am naturally a bit sad I can no longer visit the Marble Machine at the Speelklok Museum, I am very happy to see it returned to Martin.

It's home! Amazing to see snippets of each machine at the end. The original is beautiful in it's utilization of minimal resources. X is beautiful in it's precision and the connection we've made following the progress of its assembly. I did laugh a bit seeing all the marbles on the floor as you walked away from the original. Hello Martin: I follow you since I saw the video of the marble playing music, I did not know anything about you nor Wintergatan, but I remember that I was so excited to watch how a guy combined two of my favorite thing, mechanics and music and how this guy created something amazing, new and beautiful. I was so impress that afternoon I saw all your music videos that same afternoon and I realized that you were not only a great inventor but a very skilled musician. Right now I saw this video I can notice your enthusiasm when you talk about your creation and your passion about what you do and how it's never been an option for you to give up, I just want to tell you that you are an inspiration for many people (including me) to make what they are passion about and never give up, I promise you that if you and your band play in Mexico once I will be there for sure.

Just last week I thought that it would be a great idea for you to see your old machine once again now that you've gotten away from the stress of rebuilding it and have made good progress on building the new one. I thought it would give you a feeling of great accomplishment to see how much you've grown in your approach to design and manufacture as well as a feeling of joy to see the old friend that was so instrumental in bringing your worldwide fame. Here we are a week later and you now have the original machine in your shed to see and hear and touch whenever you like. I guess someone else had the same idea.

So much so that I re-watch the video often, sent the link to my family and friends and often show the video to other in my Iphone. What's incredible is that it's NOT perfect, that it's (seemingly) built with many fingers crossed, and to achieve such an amazing result is like winning a NASCAR even with a glued together go-cart. The gift of watching the new machine being assembled and having an inside glimpse of the inventiveness and genius that goes into how and why each piece is created...........Wednesday isn't hump day anymore, it's Wintergaten Wednesday!......Thanks

I think the low tech and sleek white look of the MM played a good part of its success : we watched the video thinking "i could do that in my garage" (disclaimer: you could not) and it gave a sense of reacheable built, close to us. I loved the fact that it's rubber bands, screws in any directions, a not perfect machine doing perfect music. I know the MMX is a beast next to it, and I hope you'll find an as much good way to show it to people as for the first one.

Imagine my disappointment to find the Machine had been sent back to Martin only the week before my visit 😭😭😭 Museum Speelklok is currently undergoing renovations and only half of the place is open. There were performance issues with the Machine as well, as Martin has talked about, so I gather it was difficult for the museum to demonstrate and maintain.

I can honestly say I have never teared up during an unboxing video... until today. It only occurred to me when Martin was measuring the box before opening it. Then I was like, nooo... can it be? I had the honor of meeting Martin and the amazing Marble Machine at the Speelklok museum last year. His musical and mechanical genius can only be matched by his charisma and endless fighting spirit! The Marble Machine melody will always be cherished by me and my family as we played it at my wedding last summer. I visited the Speelklok musuem on numerous occasions over the past year just to get my fix of the Marble Machine, often fussing over its well being if I saw damage or a part missing and wondering about its future. At least now the Marble Machine is back with its maker so I no longer worry but I still wonder what will happen to the Marble Machine once MMX is complete...

I'll never forget seeing the original for the first time. At work for over 12 hours trying to get our databases working, and just clicking on the video because it looked cool. It gave me energy to keep going. Luckily, i only needed about 30 more minutes. It was invigorating and maybe a little bit lucky. I showed everybody i know, and have followed ever since. The original, and the story of the MMX, is truely inspiring. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Been thinking a bit about the new machine. You know what's beautiful about it? Eventually, it's going to break. Somewhere along the tour, someone's going to manhandle it a bit too hard, and chip a tooth off one of the plywood gears. So, they're going to take their CAD files, find themselves someone nearby with a CNC router, make a new gear, slap it on, and continue with the show/tour. Every third or fourth city, something will break. Every time something breaks, they will fix it, and each replacement part is going to look subtly or not so subtly different from the rest of the machine. Maybe the part will be painted or branded by the maker, or someone will use a different species of wood. By the end of the tour, the machine will be half Martin and company's work, and half from makerspaces and professional fab shops from across Europe and North America. And that is just plain awesome. Like a living record of the tour. You could tell the story of the whole tour through the replacement parts, patches, and fixes on the machine.

He will not be sending it UPS or something like that. Typically when transporting music equipment you have the pieces in cases that are made for shipping. While there will always be accidents for the most part I will be surprised if he has to do more than replace a part that some freak accident finds it unusable. In all the years of working in music its not common to find even large equipment that has serious problems due to transporting, setting up and tearing down. It's just part of the business so everyone is used to it.

I think they need to go the route of Pink Floyd and built three identical machines so they can send one ahead and have it assembled before they arrive. The second machine will be at the previous city being disassembled while the third machine is live on stage.

After viewing the struggle to box & ship the original MM we can see why Martin wanted to be able to break down the MMX into major sub-assemblies for transport and rapid deployment! As much as the MMX will be an improvement over the MM mark one, I'm still in awe that Martin was able to build the MM with a bandsaw and a few hand tools....

Now that everything is in CAD/CAM have you thought about offering DIY kits? As a toy designer I'd love to see a scaled down version, maybe 1/4 scale that could be purchased as a kit, assembled and then used to make music. The fact that you are essentially building a big-ass mechanical sequencer is especially interesting to me. I'd love to see an interface added to allow the MMX to control something like a pipe organ. I've really, really enjoyed this journey you're on. I can't wait to see and hear the final machine.

@lo-firobotboy7112
@lo-firobotboy7112 6 лет назад
That's the beauty of being a toy designer. In my line of work I often take complex mechanisms and "play patterns" and simplify them such that the essence of the experience is preserved. In the case of the Marble Machine X some of the more complex assemblies could be simplified and output as single molded/printed parts. For instance that lovely marble divider made from individually hand bent acrylic tubes could be made as a two-part clam-shell. Similarly, at a smaller size the programming wheel could could be output as a single drum with in-mold gear details on either end. I think you could make quite a nice MMM (Marble Machine Mini). I'll take two!

Martin! The first Marble Machine might not be perfect, but I love that thing! Why do you treat it like that?! What I love most about it it's how imperfect it is, how much ingenuity and pure passion you put on it to make it work. A match box high-hat? Dry rice? Fantastic! Where else on Earth would I find something like that? The MMX is an amazing project, and the Wintergatan Wednesdays are the thing I look forward to the most all week. The Marble Machine brought me here. I'm really, immensely glad you went on with that machine you made with only a bandsaw and a sander. How many people can say they made something like that? And it let me to your magical music! I'm really excited to see what it is Wintergatan will bring next.
@simplylinn
@simplylinn 6 лет назад
As much as the MMX is a refined and objectively better machine than the original in terms of stability, reliability and all other facts, there's just something about the original MM that just appeals to me. I think it's the "Let's solve the issues as we go" approach you had when building it, with bolting on the things as you required them and not really having this CAD designed, thought out process you have now. Also, the hand made roughness of the original has its own charm, where you made everything by hand and got a song out in the end, it's a bit magical. Don't get me wrong, I'm super excited for the MMX, it's going to be awesome to have an instrument that can actually be used and reused without being a total pain to operate and move around. The best way I can summarize it is that MMX is amazing and elegant, whereas the MM1 was flawed and magical. I have great hopes for the future, and huge nostalgia for the past. You really provide the best of both worlds Martin!

There was a day when a young Martin looked up at great pieces of Automta and was inspired. His inspiration lead to the Marble Machine, Marble Machine X, Wintergatan Wednesdays. Now, every day millions of people look upon Martin's work and how the Marble Machine X is coming together. Those people feel their own inspiration in a thousand different fields, in a million different ways. The longest lasting legacy of the Marble Machine will be that it was the inspiration to a new generation of creators, before it was even fully assembled.

Would have been nice to see a legacy relic or two from the past live on in the future machine (just like Han Solo’s gambling dice hanging from the ceiling in the Millennium Falcon) 😊 Edit: I’m not asking for a functional part, I’m asking for a purely cosmetic trinket from the past machine.

I really have to say that the old marble lift mechanism looks soooooo much nicer and especially cleaner than the new design. Don't get me wrong, I really really like nearly everything you do on the new machine, its just absolutely amazing! You are a real artist. But the new marble lift mechanism, at least in my opinion, is not a clearly defined part, its the thing on the wheels, then the fishstair, then this chain mechanism. And not to forget the marble demagentizer. This actually is my first youtube comment ever (I think) but this was way to important for me to not saying this.
