One of our active duty engines carries 2,500 Gallons but we do not call it a tanker I wonder why across the country we have so many different ideas in what a tanker really is.

@jaysmith1408

@@HeroesNextDoor my last company had an engine with a thousand gallon tank, which technically qualified it as a tanker, had it had dump capability. Of my current department, four trucks could be considered tankers for water purposes, but only one is classified as such. It’s a Sterling Acterra with a three thousand gallon tank and a pump. The others are just engines with lots of water. I think it comes down to usage. If you’re going to run it as an engine, call it an engine. If I’m calling for tankers, I’m expecting Pete 379’s and 4,000 gallons. More so now there are companies with understandably small budgets that can’t get an engine and a tanker, but overloading an engine with that much water slows down your first our piece. Likewise, a six person cab (probably a custom) tools, hose, and body work, would slow down your tanker, which really only is supposed to do one thing, and take away from performance, or more capacity, never mind that a tanker can shave off hundreds of thousands over an engine tanker. As well, tying up your department‘s engine for a water shuttle, seems a waste of resources. Back to point, what looks, acts, sounds, and works, like a tanker? A tanker. What looks, runs, pumps, and works like an engine? An engine.

You need to do an episode on Madison City Indiana... or 6 episodes. If you don't know what that means, you will after you look into it. Most unique Volunteer Fire Dept(s) anywhere. Check it out, you'll enjoy the set up.
@franklewis6943
@franklewis6943 2 года назад
Unique, how? Because it's six independent volunteer fire companies operating under a unified command? If that's the case, does that make Montgomery County (MD) Fire & Rescue--19 independent volunteer fire companies operating out of 33 stations (plus another 5 career stations owned by the county) under a unified command--three times more unique? Or Loudon County in Virginia, also composed of 16 volunteer companies plus the county-owned compliment running out of 26 stations? Same thing with Prince William and Prince George's Counties in Virginia, and Frederick County in Maryland--all composed of independent volunteer companies operating under a unified command. And these are example of that sort of volunteer/career split from the DC metro area alone.

@@franklewis6943 Not my department brother. I honeymooned in Madison, thought it was pretty awesome how they work like that. I'm from the land where Volunteers fight over imaginary lines in the dirty still lol. Thats why I was asking for Heros next door to do that. They should focus on that everywhere thought. Might teach the others something.
@franklewis6943
@franklewis6943 2 года назад
@@paulgillespie8467 I guess I'm lucky that throughout my career I've not experienced any serious turf wars between departments, though there have been a few light-hearted "get off my lawn" moments when my second-due engine beat the first-due to a run in their territory. Regardless, I know it's an issue in places, and it boggles the mind, especially considering how challenging it's become these days for many volunteer department just to recruit members. Seems to me if you're doing the job because you truly care about the community and the people in it, you'd be delighted that *_somebody_* arrives ASAP when the tones sound, even if that somebody isn't you. Meanwhile, if you want to see dysfunction, check out...on second thought, I still have friends and professional contacts in the region, so I'll instead simply opine that sometimes fire departments really do work better together. Lastly, understand I was in no way disparaging Madison FD; I'm sure they're a fine organization, and I admire that they remain volunteer. I will definitely tune in if Mike does highlight them on his channel because you're absolutely correct: We can always learn something from other departments as long as we accept that there's always more to learn about the job. Be safe, stay low and go, partner.

Very nice rig. But it’s a Tender, not a Tanker Chief. I’m assuming you understand ICS, a tanker flies, as in a plane, a tender is on wheels and drives on roads. If your part of the American Fire Service then surly you must manage your fire operations using the Incident Command System.
@HeroesNextDoor
@HeroesNextDoor 2 года назад
Yeah the thing is as we travel across America the names change and everyone is very passionate about what it’s called even though we know the purposes. Maybe with enough support we can work together to unify what they are call.

Please an overview about license requirements and truck weights would be great. It does sound unsafe not to have commercial drivers license on this one. But when do you need on? In Germany Firefighter taht want driver heavy trucks over 7.5 tons do need a Commercial driver license class C like any other truck driver (while many have truck driver have a CE license for trailers.
@bradleymtz1861
@bradleymtz1861 2 года назад
Yea I was very surprised when he gave that answer. In my department we also have to get a commercial drivers license in order to drive the trucks.

At our volunteer fire station in Pennsylvania, to drive a fire truck requires several hours of local and monitored training and sign off by the fire chief PLUS we also require completion of an EVOC Class (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course) that is offered by the county.
@jaysmith1408
@jaysmith1408 2 года назад
In most states, fire apparatus do not require CDL’s when in emergency operation. By the letter of the law, for training, maintenance, or fuel, one is required. No career-cherishing officer is going to bark up that tree. The mechanics do require at least class B with tanker endorsements. My last company had two guys (myself and another) with cdl’s, mine by career, his by choice, but was not required. State certified EVOC only. I’m not fond of it, especially due to the added equipment and regulations on these trucks to make them more general driver tolerant, and less like trucks, but what can ya do. Already short of crew, if you had a CDL requirement for operators, you’d have much longer response times, if you could get out the door at all, in most urban departments.

0:35 I understood that you only need a briefing to drive the truck. Is that right? In Germany u need an extra license to drive trucks like this. And this is very complicated in our county because its cost 2000€ and they dont wanna pay. And everytime its a fight to get the money that u can make a license for those trucks.

Do you think the eastern US will ever switch from the tanker to water tender designation? A lot of the western US switched nearly 30 years ago as to not confuse air tankers and water tenders!
