@andrewzombie yes, the case makes you feel the need to make something of it, but would need a completely different control, a kind of micro pc that got enough SATA ports, there is not enough space for a simple mainboard, while you could use a pretty old one and make a useful machine from scrap this way, maybe place a screen in one of the side panel and just use a basic OS that doesn't need more than having file management and the ability to control the drives.

I was the IT guy at a TV production company in this time period in the uk. They were forever burning bits of their shows, often multiple copies. Some poor meat sack was sitting at a one drive desktop doing this. I did some research and I recommend buying a unit very similar to this. Got to be a hero, for a short while. Great times :-) thanks for the reminder! Edit: oh, and I don't think it worked with commercial DVDs so you'd need to crack the protection before living out your "pirate king" dreams ;-)

I bought one of those years ago and the control board died. So, I did what any rational person would do and built my own. I replaced it with a stack of Raspberry Pi computers each hooked to a usb to sata adapter. This allowed me to work off iso images rather than putting a physical disc in the top. I wrote software to control them all over the network so they would work like one machine. It's really slick and I still use it from time to time.

Back in the day when scsi was still the king. I built cd-rom towers. Looked like that case. Just had 7 drive bays and just loaded it up. Even had the number selector on the back for the scsi id. But once thing I would like to do it eject all the drives in row. I now have it along with a server I built back in the day. When I moved back to my home town. The computer store I was working at was going out of business. So he was like did you want any of this stuff. So for my memories I took the server and the cd tower. To give you idea of a time frame. Dual PIII server.

This was fun! I enjoyed seeing a video from someone that didn't exactly grow up in the scene. As soon as you put the DVD in i'm like, Hrm.. i wonder if it's even going to read a disc burned by your external. I can't tell what it is but it sort of looks like a superdrive, they pretty notorious for not making super high quality burns, and the media itself comes into play here too, plus those DVD drives in the tower don't exactly look like super high quality units either. Then when it failed and you tested i'm thinking, well the data probable doesn't match the lead in TOC, plus the disc is open, and many drives won't even read open discs. I still burn media, although pretty infrequently, and i still use an old Pioneer DVR or a Plextor, plus Taiyo Yuden media. That combo will burn discs that will read on anything that still functions, including stuff that usually doesn't read burned media.
