My husband was born in Curacao. He left Curacao when he was 10 years old. He grew up in St. Kitts 🇰🇳. His mom was from Nevis. I love st. Kitts 🇰🇳. Especially Frigetsbay. Nevis is nice too. I think it's around 20 minutes or 30 minutes by the ferry ⛴️ from St. Kitts 🇰🇳 to Nevis.

As a St. Martiner, there was a lot missing from this interview. No mention of Guavaberry, Arrowroot, string band music like Tanny and the boys, bottle blowers, the Ponum Dance, our local calypsonians and so much more. Not to say that what he said about the diversity is incorrect, but it was just lacking more depth. In terms of remaining Dutch influence, you can see it in the architecture in Philipsburg, people love Gouda cheese with their johnny cakes, eat croquettes and and greet each other with 3 kisses on the Dutch side and two kisses on the French side. Back in the day many St. Martiners moved to Curacao and Aruba looking for work in the oil refinery. As a result Papiamento/u can also be heard. The goodbye phrase he meant was "God's willing/ God spare or God spare life- see you later God spare!"

Thanks for sharing those additional interesting aspects about Sint Maarten. Of course, Wilfred was obviously very knowledgeable about the local culture -- especially for one who wasn't originally from there. And given the time limit of a video interview, he was generous in sharing what he knew, and of course, him-one kyaanh know everyt'ing, right? ☺ That said, since history is replete w/colonial influences long-surviving in the lands and among the populace of nuff former colonies, I am not surprised by your mention of the survivals of Dutch architectural styles, certain food preferences, etc., there. And about that parting greeting at the end: growing up in Jamaica, "God's willing" was a common expression I used to hear, so it was easy to anticipate that's what he was referring to. It seems a common idea in many lands: A decade ago, a Jamaican friend in USA, visited East Africa, and in his emails told us about a phrase common among the people there -- "Inshallah" -- which means the same thing, only expressed in the local people's religious-cultural language. So the idea is really the same, and is a common human heartfelt expression in many cultures. Bless! 🌻🌻 🇯🇲 🇯🇲

@@dolphins3291 Yes he did a good job and you can tell he is enjoying the island fully. I find all these interviews interesting to see other's perspectives of different countries. For me it was just a reminder for our island we have to do more to promote our local culture, history and specialities so it is more evident for all to enjoy and embrace. Kingston college always loosing the school challenge quiz wow I get the opportunity to visit St. Martin it’s a beautiful Island the other Island is St.Lucia it beautiful I hear what you saying the reason why they handle the us currency very well is because of the cruise ships that come to the port, did you move south Florida Kingston 21 wow ( the Guyanese call it bake Yes when I was in St. Martin I seen plenty Jamaican there yes that where I was Simpson Bay beautiful 👏🏾👏🏾 you’re so right other place I would Is St Kitts & Nevis however food there is very expensive because they import everything that’s the negative side. Thank you for the memories not to be negative if you get into any situation the first thing they’re going to say he is a Jamaican & send him back home that how they roll, you only have those passport by nationalization the festival he’s referring to is when Jamaican have there reggae festival, one thing I seen while I was there on vacation and talking to Jamaican on the beaches they said the struggle is there just like anywhere I am sorry 😢 to hear that your brother-law was kill there my friend lost his only son there too many years ago his mother never went back there. Like you said anything you put your mine to you can succeed at it, one thing I should say Jamaican set the trends because every where I went on vacation I always see a Jamaican person doing business Antigua is other place I see a small Jamaican community, It’s like every body like travel and settle and start a new life if they can you have the opportunity to live in different countries one however Jamaica where you start and every where you go negativity there remember that. One love thank you for sharing

@@normacoote9856 @Otis Lee Same for my family. I'm the only one living abroad and trust me, these countries are overrated and come with their own problems...but some Jamaicans love to boost odda place (even when they are not wanted) and throw away Jamaica.

@Otis Lee They know. They are corrupt and in it for themselves. Every "third world" country has the same problem that Jamaica have...and the people tend to leave and go elsewhere for opportunities...mainly because their governments are trash.

I just find for me there are three set of countries where the accents are so similar it is almost impossible to tell them apart. Of course within these countries there are variations in the accent but to me these countries are Antiguans and Jamaicans, Dominicans (from Dominica not the Dominican Republic) and St. Lucians and Americans and Canadians.
@dunnsriverdunnsriver
@dunnsriverdunnsriver 2 года назад
@@waynepond8748 You are spot on with Antiguans, Dominicans (Spice Island) and Jamaicans, with an extension to Vinventians. These islands sound very similar, with slight variations. However, I couldn't connect with the St. Lucian, US, and Canada reference. Especially because St. Lucian's have a very french inflection to their accent.
