I had an opportunity to spend a full year at the Vostok a Russian research base on the high Antarctic plateau. That video was shot some short time before my departure from that awesome place. I have in plans to make some more videos from the short ones that I used to film there. Hope you like it!)
Filmed on January 4th 2020 at Vostok.

4200m elevation is insane, on top of being extremely cold it's also hard to breathe
@Space_and_Polar
@Space_and_Polar 7 месяцев назад
That was quite an experience. The exact altitude was 3488m amsl, but the fact that in polar regions the atmosphere is relatively thin made the altitude equivalent there about 4200m

Priviet, just found out about this fantastic channel of yours :) Defenitelly add some more content if you have some left. It must have been really tough medical wise and mentally, beeing so far away from the near hospital and everything that comes with it. Its the coldes place on eart, at least they say, but I heard that this place is not the coldest, coldest inhabited for sure but places northeast from your location or on antarctic could be even colder, from satelite measurements it shows temperatures on the surface around -100 celsius.
@Space_and_Polar

28 months is 2 winters?
@Space_and_Polar
@Space_and_Polar Год назад
The guy means two polar winters. Polar winter is about 14 months. That's because if you're there for a winter you can't get out any time you want because the logistics stops during winter months. When I've been at Vostok we were fully on our own from February to October as no plane or vehicle could come due to temperatures way lower than -50C (the minimum for our mission was -82,1C in June 2019). Things are slightly less extreme on the shoreline but stormy sea and continuous winds up to 40 m/s can deny any logistics.

I don't mind if you don't want to discuss politics, but I was curious of your thoughts regarding Russia and global warming. Some people have claimed that Russia is in a unique position with it's northern latitudes and will be hurt much less by climate change than other countries - and may even benefit due to the increasing trade on the Arctic Ocean. I am curious if this idea had any merit.

Russians must be the only nationality present in Antartica that says, "this is not so cold, what's all the fuss? Come over to our station for a bbq"
@alanlight7740
@alanlight7740 2 года назад
It's really more about the individual than the nationality, though they tend to have ancestors from places in the far north. I knew a guy at South Pole who would walk around in just a t-shirt and an open jacket when it was around -30C to -40. He was from Louisiana. Some people just run hotter than others, and some of them are downright uncomfortable at temperatures warmer than 10C. Mitochondria play a role.

How is Atmospheric pressure 4200m at Vostok and yet 3400m above Sea? 😈
@Space_and_Polar
@Space_and_Polar Год назад
That's due to the fact that it's polar region and the atmosphere is slightly thinner there and the extreme cold that affects the gas composition of air. Combination of that gives the eqivalent of pressure at 4100-4200m at the actual altitude of 3488m)
