Schizophrenia is when you experience things which are not actually real, it can be seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting or smelling etc. I cannot imagine just constantly seeing or smelling something without believing that it is real, or be able to reason my way through. It must be such a difficult journey! I do think surrounding yourself with positive energy, finding good social and family support and spiritual support, from knowing God and praying to God would definitely help much in the healing process. Hang in there if you are suffering from the condition and there is nothing to be ashamed about.
The human brain is a very complex organ. Different people have different experiences in life, religions, beliefs, etc. So when the chemical imbalances strikes, people will have hallucinations. The experiences will be similar but different with every individual, and they can be formed by all the fragments of what you belief, experienced or thoughts. Taking medication everyday does not make you be perceived as weak or ill, because if you look at it in another angle it can be normal. Ask why we need to eat? Ask can smokers live a day with a puff? Like so, then all of us are weak and ill right? It is indeed tough even if an individual wants to break free and stand up against stigma. The people around you and the society on the whole will not be so forgiving. A word of advice for people with mental health challenges - the environment in your recovery journey is crucial - and avoid toxic people at all costs!
