I’ve just got an offer from Exeter university for this course but I’ll be deferring until 2022. Even though I won’t be attending until next year, seeing your videos has helped give an overview of what being a student at Penryn campus will be like :)) subscribed

Hi Kate! Thanks so much for uploading this, I've got an offer to study the course in September and have been trying to find out more info so this was really helpful. I have 3 questions for you if you have the time! If not no worries 1. Do you think the content will be difficult for someone who hasn't studied biology A-level? 2. Are there any interactive discussions between classmates for the first two years? Am slightly concerned to hear that there aren't many seminars. 3. I'm looking for a course where I can get involved in real conservation work, do you know of any projects that the lecturers are working on? Or is it purely an academic department. (Sorry to be asking all these, I have tried emailing the university but haven't heard anything back) Thanks so much for your time

Hey! Congrats on getting an offer! 1. The first year focuses quite a bit on getting everyone on the same level, so I think you should be fine without A-level biology - I definitely know some people who didn't do it and they were fine! 2. For the modules I did in my first two years there weren't many discussions, unless we were doing group projects, but my third year has been better and we have one discussion a week per module and the classes are a bit more like seminars in terms of class size. 3. Not sure about specific projects with lecturers but the department has a 'professional development' module where you can intern with an academic for a term and get 5 extra credits for it. The course itself doesn't involve much 'real' conservation work but there are extracurricular projects run by students such as Kernow Conservation, which focuses on rewilding projects with the local community. Hope that helps and feel free to ask any more questions that come to mind!

What’s the difference between zoology and ecology and conservation biology course? I heard that zoology was more biology focused and in depth.
@katechurch4922
@katechurch4922 3 года назад
They're pretty similar but some of the core modules are different in second year. Zoology focuses more on animal behaviour whereas Ecology focuses more on conservation and how knowledge can be applied. But even though some of the core modules are different, you can often choose them as optional modules as students on either course can do almost all the same modules

Hi Kate, Great video - can I ask how much Maths, Chemistry and Physics are included in the course?
@katechurch4922
@katechurch4922 3 года назад
Hi! There hasn't been much Chemistry or Physics, at least on the modules I've done (it might be different if you choose to do any of the optional Geography modules). There's some Maths in most of the modules but a lot of the time it's just there to explain concepts and you don't need to know the full details. For assignments you usually need to do some stats though and there's a compulsory stats module in second year but the lecturer is really good and it's not as bad as it seems! Sorry for the long answer but hope that helps!

Hi! I’ve got an offer for the same course in September and was wondering overall how friendly the department is? I’ve ideally been looking for somewhere with a smaller cohort of students and was wondering if they make up for the huge class sizes in any way? Thanks!
@katechurch4922
@katechurch4922 3 года назад
Hey, congrats for getting an offer! I'd say on the whole they're really friendly and helpful! Lecturers are always happy to answer questions either after lectures or by email and generally have two one-hour time slots a week where you can just pop into their office and ask any questions. Hope that helps!

Do you ever feel cut off from the main campus and the rest of Uni of Exeter? Is the teaching quality and degree prestige the same as main campus and do you wish you were at the main Campus? Thanks 👍
@katechurch4922
@katechurch4922 3 года назад
I personally don't but that's probably because studying on a small campus was important to me. I'm not sure about discrepancies in teaching between the two campuses as it will likely vary between courses but the workload at least for Conservation Biology is pretty low which is disappointing but not sure if Biology at the main campus is any better. Sometimes I have wondered whether I should have studied straight biology at Streatham but at the end of the day being on a small campus was more important to me at the time when I was applying and Cornwall is a super nice place to live! Hope that helps a bit and sorry for the long response!

Whats the sports like in Peryn Campus, do you guys participate in BUCS?
@katechurch4922
@katechurch4922 3 года назад
Sports are good, there's something like 50 different sports clubs and some of them take part in BUCS. I took part in the parkour society and that was really fun! And if a specific specific sports club isn't there, you can always set up a society for it yourself
@songlee9122
@songlee9122 3 года назад
@@katechurch4922 so i take that main sports like rugby, basketball and football BUC teams are located on the devon campus? Thanks for replying, really helps me make my uni decisions.
@katechurch4922
@katechurch4922 3 года назад
@@songlee9122 I'm not too sure about the specific clubs but it could be worth checking out www.thesu.org.uk/opportunities/groups/directory/ (which has info for all the different societies at Penryn) and contacting the societies directly
