Can confirm, Iraq can be dark a.f. with no discernible horizon, even with NVG. Since the visual part of orientation is primarily peripheral vision, NVGs don't help much in that regard, and can suck pilots into spacial disorientation or misinterpreting closure rates. I'd have to think flying something like an F-16 or A-10 would present unique challenges since there's so little window framing and aircraft structural bits to reference off of as compared to a helicopter. I have to appreciate the "Make Them Tell You No", as it is essentially the same mantra that finally got me into Army aviation a couple decades ago. My oldest brother (USAF E-9 at the time) told me "give them no excuse to not accept your application". Most of all, thanks Mover for the Memorial Day message, and for pointing us to Folds of Honor.

Fantastic Video! Thank You for reminding people what this means, Memorial Day. To honor all who lost their life for us, the American citizens, to protect us from the evil out there. Please, the Americans that never had the opportunity to meet them. Honor each of them. Thank You Sir for this being in your video right up front. So many don't understand. The 3 day weekend is what I heard every one I worked with say. I reminded EVERYONE what this day means to all the entire time, until I retired. With that, I again appreciate all for their ultimate sacrifice. May you all be resting in peace Semper Fidelis

So many interesting pieces of information here. It was cool in the vid' seeing the wing vapor vortices illuminated by the collision lights, which should not have been my main takeaway from this, but there you have it. But, it also made me have a whole new respect for the famous WWII Dam Busters from RAF 617 squadron, flying at ludicrously low levels at night, and none of the INS/GPS information available - it was called a navigator. A now deceased former navigator, and family friend, told my dad they used to work out height from wave tops, and would often arrive back in England with salt spray on the aircraft. I just read another typically British mission, ridiculously dangerous and potentially suicidal, in which Wng Commander Ken Gatwood flew a wave top height mission into Paris, in a Bristol Beaufighter to shoot up a major parade the Germans were planning post invasion. The parade never happened, but Gatwood dropped a huge Tricolor on the Arc de Triomphe, and then strafed the Gestapo head quarters with 20mm on his way out, much to the delight of Parisians. You pilots, past and present, do some ballsy stuff...landing on aircraft carriers in the middle of the night, in varied weather, and the deck is moving, for example.... Cheers.

Used to work on night vision for years for the Navy and Army, in the early years I remember pilots used AN-PVS 5C then later ANVIS 9 GEN 3. NODs have come a long way since the early days of use, used to be a time when a soldier had a AN-PVS 4 mounted on his M16, that was one big piece of equipment and added another 4 lbs to the rifle.

Hey Mover. Thanks for all the awesome videos you put out. Any chance you can comment on the recent UFO sightings by Navy pilots? There have been several targeting pod videos released of these, with audio, and the pilots seem truly confused as to what these objects are. They move at accelerations and speeds that no known aircraft are capable of. I would love to hear your opinion, thanks.

Hello, My name is Brandon and your videos have been by far the most helpful resource in aiding my understanding of the fighter pilot career process. In several videos you speak to the reserve and ANG route. A video going into this deeper would be EXTREMELY helpful. - what you should do to prepare and make yourself competitive in applying (grades, experience, PPL) - best way to find UPT openings or rush days (websites, who to call first, etc) - logistics of rushing a unit. Let’s say you live in Oregon and want to apply to as many units as possible. Do you have to take trips across the country to each unit for each rush? - ANG vs AF reserve. Any differences in process, requirements etc. Also another question. I dream of flying the f35. However all the units I’ve looked into seem to mostly be f15 and f16. Are more units going to be getting f35s in the near future? Thanks again and I really hope you have time to make a video on this. I really appreciate it. Best Regards, Brandon

I've heard that the helmet on the F-35 displays imagery from onboard network of video cameras, allowing the pilot to see everything around the aircraft. If this is so, imagine how bad ass it would be for the pilot to see the HUD information through their nightvision optics.

They amplify light. They aren't like thermals. You'd see an afterburner brightly but exhaust you would not.

Nvg operates in the "near infrared spectrum" near infra red is still light just slightly above or below your normal eye sight spectrum then converts it to visible light your eye can see. Thermal is actual infra red spectrum.

Do you ever slam them into the canopy by accident? Like if you quickly look over your shoulder? Thank you for an informative video :)
@carsonprince3634
@carsonprince3634 4 года назад
Typically NVG's will make your head front heavy, so prolonged wear with them will hurt your neck (Unless you have a counterweight on the helmet). Yes, pilots have slammed their NVG's into the canopy. Sometimes it can damage them, but they will mostly be fine. Hope this helps.

@CWLemoine
@CWLemoine 5 лет назад
Waste of time and not very practical when you're flying (especially in a fighter designed with HOTAS in mind). It's much easier just to look under the goggles to see stuff inside and then transition back outside. Also, the caps on these are not flip up or flip down, they are removed and placed in the case during use.
@YZFoFittie
@YZFoFittie 5 лет назад
@@CWLemoine yeah that's the old tech, we use these now: tnvc.com/shop/phokus-hoplite-nvg-focusing-cover/ You can instantly flip them up and down and select the correct aperture for the focal length needed. Does your instrument lighting not interfere and bloom your NVGs? Seems that at least with older non-autogated this would be a big issue? I have read where this was a problem in Blackhawks? Maybe the difference is in visible light discipline. A fighter at altitude vs a helo near ground level?
@CWLemoine
@CWLemoine 5 лет назад
You're comparing ground (where you'd need it to see up close) to aviation. As I explained in the video, some lighting is NVG compatible (F-16 and newer jets like the F/A-18C/D/E/F) and some isn't. There's just no reason to need to have the goggles focused inside the cockpit. I'm sure some older Blackhawks had issues with non-NVG compatible lighting, but I'm guessing most have been upgraded.

Hey C.W. Lemoine, I‘m somehow a history buff and I really enjoy your videos and the interesting aspects and insights in a military way of flying. But there‘s also a dark side to it too, which bothers me somehow. I get it, a lot of your commentators are big patriots and you yourself probably too. We all know that the US (and the NATO too) is responsible for a lot of violations of international law and violations of the UN charter (Iran 1953, Guatemala 1954, Egypt 1956, Kuba 1961, Vietnam 1964, Nicaragua 1981, Serbia 1999, Afghanistan since 2001, Iraq since 2003, Libya since 2011, Syria since 2011, Jemen since 2015). In 2016 the US the military spending was about 611 billion dollars (China with 215 billions second, Russia with 69 billions third) and it has increased to 649 billion dollars in 2018. Thanks to Assange and Manning (and others) we know now how destructive the US military is and how little civilian life counts for the big military industrial complex. There are a lot of dictators around the globe, but coincidentally the west only cares for the ones in oil rich countries (or with mineral resources). Does this not bother you at all? Did you ever question that? Or do you still believe in a world view of good and evil? Is the destruction of all these countries really an act of freedom and a service for national security? Pilots are smart people and I would love to hear your side of the story. Have a nice day!
